You know what it's like when people say they like X and are interested in suggestions of something just like it. You suggest Y and Z because they're sorta like X, being all angular and pointy. Then, invariably, someone suggests S because it's a letter, too, and you just wanna smack 'em, cuz it's a letter, but it's nothing like X. like if i said i really liked Proem and someone then suggested Phonem, because Phonem is really only remotely like Proem when you get right down to it. no one likes to talk about it but i just keep liking Confield more and more... is there anything else like it? and I don't mean just anything remotely like it, like earlier Autechre - even that isn't just like Confield. i'm not really looking for just yer average sound collage stuff like, er, i dunno, leafcutter john or fennesz or electric company or vladislav delay or monolake or whathaveyou. something visceral and immediate is what i crave, if in fact that's what i like about confield, which it may not be. maybe i don't know what i'm talking about (that's more the norm with me, anyway), and maybe i need to revisit some of these other artists... but really - confield - is there anything else like it? ===== .Adam http://www.damek.org/ __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The first suggestion I'd make is Phthalocyanine. And also MFVS which is Phthalocyanine + Crank. You might also want to check out Crank's stuff, though I've only heard "Wanton Phenomena". I've also heard some Rook Vallade stuff that's got that improvisatory feel. Those acts generally have a rawer, less polished sound than Autechre, but I think there's a similar open ended feel to their work which is in line with "Confield".. I was bemused to see that The Wire's 50 Records of the Year list failed to mention Confield - in fact it wasn't mentioned anywhere in anyone's thoughts (including the Electronica records of the year list). I know it hasn't found favour with a lot of people, but still. Adam, if you're looking for visceral I'd recommend anything between 70 and 75 by Miles Davis, particularly Dark Magus or On The Corner, otherwise what about Jungle circa 93/94. Some of the Oval stuff to my ears is a little reminiscent of Confield.

I just remembered, Confield was in Wired magazine a few issues ago, among their music picks near the back of the mag. They said something along the lines of it being a great album, and that your kids wouldn't like it. Wired is right - when I put on 70sMiles/Autechre/etc my kids do exactly that, covering their ears and telling me to turn it off. Stuff they like is Sly and the Family Stone, James Brown and 70s disco (Amy's four Gabriel two and a half). Funk and Disco are all about connecting to people's 'feel good' center in their brains. Stuff like Autechre is all about redefining and extending the concept of musical beauty; there's an intellectual component to what they do that is going to be lost on people of an age where they can't totally understand "Blues Clues." I love Autechre, and I love Funk and Disco. They have different purposes, both valid. I especially love stuff like Marumari that takes some of the warmth and human accesibility of the latter and combines it with the ambition of the former. When my kids were small my favorite bands were Husker Du, Sonic Youth, and Dinosaur Jr. Once, when Lucas was two, we were driving somewhere with Zen Arcade playing, and Lucas told me "Turn Off that Loud Monstery Music!" We were in agreement, however, on Kraftwerk and They Might Be Giants. On one trip to Chicago, all they'd listen to was "Computer World" and Weird Al's "Off the Deep End." Now that Lucas is 13 and Sean is 17, the shared tastes are more about Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, and pre-1970 Bob Dylan. My Daughter is just over a year old (only walking for about a month) but absolutely LOVES music. I'll often play Arovane, BoC, Telefon TT, and the like. When I do, she'll scurry over to the stereo on her two shaky legs, stand in front of it pointing up to it... while swaying back and forth or bobbing her head to the music. It's a beautiful thing. Who is similar to Otto von Schirach? I am primarily interested in sound design here - the crispness of 8000bc. Complexity. Richard Devine is obviously recalled: similar in sound production, but far more technical and far less...."wet". Matmos' Chance to Cut... also comes to mind in terms of sampling organic sounds. But otto... I've mentioned before that I am very much possessed by him and unfortunately joined this list a bit after escalto frio came out, so perhaps I missed a bit of relative discussion. Here on the south side of the globe it's summer holidays, and I've been bush-bashing through our glorious country with my two offspring in the backseat. Laura is almost 13 and Christy (he's a boy) is coming on for 10. Actually, I was chacking my issues of Wired last night to make sure I'd read them before putting them in the recycling bin, I noticed that the Autechre mention was in the December 2001 issue - they had guest reviewers for that issue, and the guy who picked Confield was from MTVi of all places. And actuall, I was wrong about what he said. He said it was a great album, alright - gave it high praise. But what he said about youngsters was that they'd think you were hip if you had it. Something along those lines. Now how could I get that wrong? He was like, "get it for the benefit of your grandkids" or something. But since I don't have the issue in front of me here at work, I'm probably skewing it wrong again. So forget everything I said and just stew on the whole MTVi thing.
