IDM Mailing Archive exists to archive the IDM Mailing List and make it easily accessible and searchable for researchers, historians, and anyone curious about the culture around intelligent dance music. The list itself has been active since 1993 and is hosted at music.hyperreal.org.
179,854 messages from 9,130 senders, across 30 years and 342 monthly mboxes. Every archive is fetched from the public upstream, parsed out of raw mbox format, MIME-decoded into UTF-8, and indexed locally with full-text search. HTML emails are sanitized before display.
The top bar runs a full-text search across subject, from, to, and body. For narrower queries — a specific sender, a date range, a phrase confined to a subject line — open Advanced search. Phrases in “double quotes” match exactly.
Clicking any message opens it inside its thread. Threads group messages
by normalized subject plus the In-Reply-To /
References graph, so subject changes mid-conversation
(“Re: X (was: Y)”) still bundle together. Large threads
collapse by default; quote blocks collapse too.
All message content belongs to its original authors and is archived here only to make work that was already public easier to read, cite, and study. The canonical source remains hyperreal.org. Fonts: Fraunces by Undercase Type; IBM Plex.
