Dear IDMots, I am curious: do you take your IDM seriously? I am probably older than average here at 40 something. Back in the early seventies, my preferred listening was the likes of King Crimson, Zappa, Yes, Genesis, ELP etc.. I was often accused by friends of taking music too seriously. Since that time there hasn't been much in the way of "progressive" popular music. I am happy that IDM represents a real resurgence of experimentation and new forms of expression. And I take it pretty seriously. Of course it's not as simple as serious=good and light=bad, far from it. There's plenty of IDM with humour and fluff too. So, do you take it seriously? Are you glad, like me, that it's okay to be taking music seriously again? Martin n.p. I take it seriously about half of the time. There's a lot of IDM out there now, and a chunk of artists that fall into the genre don't seem to put their hearts into it -- they're just 'makin' tracks'. For me, I take it serious when the artist shows that they have some sort of heart in their music. Granted, many times it's a subjective difference that's based on my own opinion, but I think I've been able to do a pretty good job. I'm not out to separate the artists, mind, simply separate the glut from the great in my head. U're kiddn? Yeah I take all my music serious! Unlike EggyT, I take the artists serious too, whenever they are serious. I can just say the older music that I typically enjoy seemingly was more "serious", and the sound-in my ears-blatantly attest to the fact. Actually half the reason I'm on this list is because it's really funny to see so many people get so serious about their music. I won't claim to know much about IDM or even music itself. I cling to one simple rule. If I like it I listen to it. If Britney Spears released an album that just kicked me in the fun centre I'd listen to it. So what if she's some pop star that the 'underground' music community is supposed to hate because we take ourselves seriously and pride ourselves on artistic intent. So what if she wasn't the artisan, some artist, however commercial, produced the album and to hell with it I like it. My general feeling is that the world is catching up with us (ie IDM, dance music, electronica) much more that most of us would like to believe or imagine. As listeners we like to feel separate and distinct. We like to imagine that our identitiy is embodied in the music we listen to and the clothes we wear and we try to separate ourselves based on those facts. I'm not saying this is a rule, but rather an observation of people I know. So here we sit and discuss a bunch of obscure artists that in most cases arn't well known... they're IDM... and we listen to them because we're smart about our music and we think. Sure... but at the expense of what? At the expense of a good old time. At the cost of a good old tune... when was the last time you hummed the latest Pole tune to yourself? It seems as if I've watched the same pattern repeat several times now. Trance, drum and bass, techno... wave after wave of inventive music that grabs the attention of the subversive groups first, then the mainstream and then finds it's niche hated by those that first loved it. Yeah, I'm serious about my music... serious about finding things that I love to listen to that is. Not about being distinct or feeling distinct or seriously thinking about it. Woohoo! I agree with that. Hey, I just bought Frogger 2 (this game KICKS ASS! I can't stress this enough), and the music for the game is very IDM-ish. Well, in a highly-produced kind of way.

Me neither. I'm as much into autechre for being intricate as I am into amon tobin for being cinematic as I am into plaid for being fun and funky. But what they do sounds like they actually spend time and effort into producing it, instead of just using a granular synthesis plugin for the whole track, or generating a melody from the fibonacci sequence. To me, someone who at least sounds like they're putting an effort into doing something, even if the thing isn't very new, sounds better than someone who's just pissin' around. It's like waiting for the obligatory snare rush in, *ahem*, certain music styles. If you know where the snare rush is gonna happen, or hell, if you can even tell that one's coming up, how interesting is that? If you can second guess the artist without ever hearing their music before, how hard did they really try? Of course that changes with each person's experience -- I'm not saying my impressions work for anyone else. (or not)? Easy, besides what we take it for, whether 'We' are musicians or fans, its something more serious than just "having a good time"....(it should be used for something....i.e., if having a good time is good to stop you from killing someone, then that's serious)...or rioting, or looting..(using music to redirect negative energy)......
