Actually half the reason I'm on this list is because it's really funny to
see so many people get so serious about their music. I won't claim to know
much about IDM or even music itself. I cling to one simple rule. If I like
it I listen to it. If Britney Spears released an album that just kicked me
in the fun centre I'd listen to it. So what if she's some pop star that the
'underground' music community is supposed to hate because we take ourselves
seriously and pride ourselves on artistic intent. So what if she wasn't the
artisan, some artist, however commercial, produced the album and to hell
with it I like it. My general feeling is that the world is catching up with
us (ie IDM, dance music, electronica) much more that most of us would like
to believe or imagine. As listeners we like to feel separate and distinct.
We like to imagine that our identitiy is embodied in the music we listen to
and the clothes we wear and we try to separate ourselves based on those
facts. I'm not saying this is a rule, but rather an observation of people I
know. So here we sit and discuss a bunch of obscure artists that in most
cases arn't well known... they're IDM... and we listen to them because we're
smart about our music and we think. Sure... but at the expense of what? At
the expense of a good old time. At the cost of a good old tune... when was
the last time you hummed the latest Pole tune to yourself? It seems as if
I've watched the same pattern repeat several times now. Trance, drum and
bass, techno... wave after wave of inventive music that grabs the attention
of the subversive groups first, then the mainstream and then finds it's
niche hated by those that first loved it.
Yeah, I'm serious about my music... serious about finding things that I love
to listen to that is. Not about being distinct or feeling distinct or
seriously thinking about it.
