man, phoenecian warriors my ass! those guys just suck. i just picked up "brownout", and just like autechre's "cornhole" this stuff is straight potty. right down to the crappy artwork. yeh, let's have another flash-inspired simplistic, meaningless, omniscient sense of self-worth indicating graphic design piece for a shitloaded digipack. i need another one. to put on my collectible/fragile part of the cd shelf. which is now buckling under the weight of this incredibly dense field of dsp krap that goes just absolutely nowhere. ahem, melodies, please? sounds like a bale of marijuana being dropped over the everglades, hunh? all i hear is how those guys are so cool, and nice, and how they hang out with autechre... and don't even let me get started on those guys. the day they left their fresh-ass-break-beat-with-meaning style on incunabula was a sad day indeed. "brownout" should have been called that because that's what it sounds like happened in their studio when they made it. it's about as boring as it gets. c'mon, lets hear some more of that 'rhythmbox' miami boyz! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I have been on this list for 2 days. Can I expect a "things aren't the way they used to be" review for every new album that comes out? Yeah kelley, but you're not saying that the new stuff should be like the old stuff. You know what you like; you know what you're looking for. You're not buying new releases under the assumption that it's going to sound like older stuff. You're wary of new releases because you *know* they probably don't sound like what you're looking for. You don't buy the newest Autechre thinking it'll sound like old Stasis and then get all pissed when it doesn't, right? You already know that it's something you probably don't like, and just don't buy it. It's one thing to say "this is the type of music I like, and this album doesn't sound like that, so I don't like it," and a completely different thing to say "i like this type of music, and this artist doesn't make it [anymore], therefore this artist's music is complete shit and no one else should buy it because my opinion qualifies for everyone!" derek --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

When did I say that I "don't see how or why others keep with listening to older music"? I never said that at all - In fact, I said the opposite. I stated that I like old Aphex, BoC, etc. and I also like alot of new music too. That's a pretty strong indication that I listen to electronic music from all time periods. From 1993 Aphex to 2001 Solvent, man. I'm curious as to how you came to the conclusion that you just mentioned... And from reading alot of the posts, you'd think that some people don't get the whole "this is my opinion" thing. It's a shame that I feel like I have to mention it ever so often that "opinions differ" because alot of ppl get all-fired up if somebody likes something that someone else doesn't. This is all just plain silly now..... -somrux. ---- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Oh No----Ohh no brother Egg! U're right, I am not saying that. And you hit it dead on the head. I know that many of these artists are desperately trying to create something "new" and cant even master the old(whatever that might be, the 4/4 style I am speaking of here). I was going to post 2 the list my thoughts on this matter....AGAIN. Its like Jazz for you jazz lovers, you find those youngsters nowadays trying to do something new, say Kenny G(I hate to mention artists again but there are so, so many SISTAS who use him as an example of Jazz that I just wanna beat my head into the concrete--to stop the excruciating pain of that awful name and sound he produces). Fact is, and this is what a Hank Mobley or a Dexter Gordon would say, how can 1 begin to create something new when 1 hasn't mastered the old......besides the old is the basis from where the new must emerge! Egg my friend if I bought Ae thinking it was to sound like Stasis but didn't.....D-day is all I can say! -----Original Message----- From: EggyToast [mailto:youn0394@umn.edu] Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2001 3:30 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] you too can criticize IDM artists!
