Saw Panasonic last night in NYC. First act was DJ spooky and some guitarist making a SHITLOAD OF FUCKING NOISE to a room half full of people on the floor. Afterwards I peeked at Spooky's stack of records on the stage - on the top of the stack - his own fucking record! Then came Blond Redhead, a cute alternative rock trio which inexplicably played between two electronic noise acts... Ho hum... Panasonic was great. They look so cool on stage too, so commanding, just messing with their little decks, facing right out at us. Its cool to see two guys on a stage making so much noise without having to bang on guitars and stuff. They seemed to be improvising most of their material, twiddling with knobs until they had a groove then going with it for a bit, then moving on to some other noise and bleeps. They opened with the off-tempo beat that was kickin, went into some noise, back to a groove, etc. The last ten minutes of the show seemed to be a kind of a beatless noise rut from which, unfortunately, they could not extricate themselves. They seemed to operate on this tension-release system, where the white noise and arrhythmic bleeps would seem to slowly evolve into beats, but not quite... teasing you into thinking you would be rewarded with a groove... then, if you were good, you would get your groove and all would be sweet as long as they let you have your groove, then the beat would dissolve back into the analog bleepy wash, only to come out again later... I was dancing, but most of the crowd was just watching them, many of them with their fingers in their ears. Those of you who are worried about the mainstreaming of electronic acts don't have to worry - as long as the IDM crowds stay so boring, tight assed and stiff, we can be suire the music will stay esoteric and the artists will stay poor. I asked the Panasonic guys afterwards if they usually get people dancing more, and they said no. They seemed to be embarassed by the question, as if they thought that dancing was bad. Although Panasonic is sometimes lumped into the techno category, and although their grooves are clearly house music influenced, they and their fans still appear to suffer from the same snotty problem that this entire IDM mailing list is founded on: That there is "intelligent" dance music and there is "unintelligent" dance music. And too often this breaks down to meaning that intelligent dance music is too good to actually dance to, unlike dumb dance music like house. By the way, one thing I'm noticing more and more at IDM type shows is the total lack of diversity in the crowd. At this show, the first thing I noticed was that besides the doorman and DJ spooky, there appeared to be no black people in the house. When I'm in an environment like that I have to ask myself why it is that way... The promoters of these events market them like they were alternative rock head nodding events, and to be honest Blond Redhead had a bigger crowd than Panasonic. It would be cool for Panasonic to play with an act that really actually is about dancing like maybe Daft Punk. Nah, maybe not - just like most Panasonic fans don't know they are listening to techno, most Daft Punk fans probably don't even know that they are listening to old school purebred house music. I'll bet Daft Punk shows are just as boring. IDM should be more fun! I had fun, and all I had was a flask of rum in my pocket. What's the solution? Strobe lights? -CF

Screw that idea. People who want to stand around or sit to electronic music (ambient aside) should be listening to Vangelis or Yanni. The whole reason I became interested in techno is that it is a hell of a lot more fun to move to than industrial or alternative. If artistic acceptance means standing around then I'm happy listening to the trash that has a decent beat.

Hear hear. The solution is a lack of weiners in the scene who can't dance. One of my pet peeves are DJs who stand around watching the other DJs instead of dancing. The first time I saw the Orb, Thrash maniacally danced in the audience while Alex DJ'd after the show. That is the way it should be. Bring on the ridiculous outfits.

Errr...cause IDM is wack-ass white boy music. No getting around it. Is it so suprising that there are no brothers in the house when there are less than a handful of black IDM artists outside of Detroit (not counting the uk junglists)? i reckon they probably got the wrong end of the stick... im sure theyd be cool if people were dancing, but i guess it doesnt happen much, i saw them supporting squarepusher in sheffield about two years ago and they were brilliant, i was dancing anyway... while the warp/Desingners Republic lot stood around looking 'aloof'..

ive given up listening to what most people on this list think now... im sure many of them would describe derrick may as dumb house/techno... without realising that one rhythim is rhythim track contains more soul and power than everything by orbital/chemicals/photek,. the irony of the situation is that all these artists were undeniably influenced by the detroit sound. And then you might get acts like the black dog who are percieved as 'intelligent' by people,... but they try and class it as some sort of 'head-music / electronica'... bdp and balil are perfect for listening to at home... but they also make me want to shuffle like a nutter if i hear it out! (and how often is that?!......) but then i dance to merzbow so what do i know.....no one else at the planet mu gig seemed to be dancing when i played it though!!?! whats wrong with you kids?..........so i put 'balil'-norte route on and everyone sat down and nodded their heads.,..doh

i think you should give panasonic fans more credit!! :)i think most people (in europe anyway) would percieve them as techno. hmmm i think a joint panasonic/daft punk gig might end up empty! i wouldnt want to think i had to sit thru daft punk to see panasonic! (and i like old school chicago house before anyone accuses me of being purist!!). Steve /k/./F/

I just meant many of them at the show! It's a NYC thing too. People don't get down much here sometimes, especially for IDM type events. But I should be clear - if you like Panasonic and they are playing in your area, go see the show and groove to it however you want to - they rock! -CF

Yeah, that's cause we are all too cracked out on Special K and Crystal Meth. ObIdm: Picked up SKAMpler (phat) and the Like A Tim remixes(unspectacular). Yes, there are some 808-ish sounds on Kulma, and earlier works. Plus the 0 "metri" has this "jl-csg" pair of trax. (based on the history of synth-naming-schemes, I'd guess this JL's Computerized Sound Generator) The modules pictured on the "Kulma" sleeves look like a sound generator (short thingie) and a cv-sequencer (I guess this because the knobs are strangely not labelled and thus probably steps in a sequence rather than timbral parameters.) Also, did you notice that the lower module is mounted in what looks like a typewriter case! What a great idea... The tube picture on the back of the sleeve could be any old amp, really... The range of sounds I've heard on 0/Panasonic stuff suggests an 808 and a simple semi modular (Roland 100m?) monosynth (very patchable though) and (most importantly) an especially well-explored digital efx box like that 4-channel Ensoniq thingie. Also, there is a crude overdriving mixer/amp somewhere in the setup. I'm skeptical that the homemade-looking device pictured on the inner sleeve of Kulma necessarily had to be used to make the trax. More of a tribute to some local gearhead is my guess. Anyway, Mika Vainio certainly didn't need a sampler to do the stuff he's released. Regardless of my speculations, I don't know what he/they _actually_ used... !Panasonic are the masters of gated reverbs, esp in combo with dry sounds! Disclaimer: I just returned from the biggest US brewers festival HQ, conveniently 3 stories above my music studio/loft... This is *exactly* what we should be growing beyond. I listen toIDM (i still hate that term) among my funk and hip-hop tunes. My criticism of idm isalways the lack of funk. Some Clear releases are an exception but not many. Hey, how about a thread about idm with some funk to it. I'll start the list with Doktor Rockit. Who's next?

Good stuff, but on the whole, more than a bit too stiff and academic to really qualify as funky. Closest thing to IDM funk I can come up with off the top of my head are _The Crackdown_ and _Microphonies_ by Cabaret Voltaire, from their computerized-industrial-hip-hop phase. The bass guitar on _The Crackdown_ really does it. And I'll take this opportunity to recommend the Jeff Mills compilation _The Other Day_ (on React). It covers just about all the highest points from his many 12" singles on Axis, including all of the Growth EP. Funk and mathematical precision. 8/10 at least (on my harsh bell-curve scale). --Mark

Aye, I think Dr. Rockit is very suave in his shuffling beats. I just listenned to the latest Speedy J and liked the cohesive buildup of the tune, but kind of longed for some swing to the beat... but then I've been at a party all day where they were playing the Stax singles collection cd's Vol 1-8. Whew! The BarKays have been around a while, amen! Solenoid (too drunk to find his .sig file...)

I'll agree with this one. I finally bought something on Clear, a Clatterbox 12" w/ two remixes of Spatz and 2 other tracks. I only have one complaint - I wish the Paul Teebrooke remix was about twice as long (or at least the second half of it anyway - that synth part just fills everything right in, although the ending seems like it's going to be fuck-all for mixing out of...). I could go on again evangelizing about the Detroit masters, but there's already been mention of Carl Craig at least, which is well-deserved in a discussion of funky electronic music. Not NP, but I have it in my head: Emerson Lake and Palmer's "Lucky Man" - that portamento/pitch-bended Moog solo is damn funky! sounds! I don't know much about equipment, but I can give it a try from memory: There was a full on 808 there, which as a layman I only recognize from the Rebirth screen layout! Strangely, they didn't seem to be using the 808 much since only about 30% of the show even had beats. There were two rack-mount effects thingys and a small mackie mixer. No keyboards in sight. I asked if they used any computers or sequencers and they said yes they had a sequencer, but it wasn't a PC/mac sequencer - some outboard unit or something. The setup was pretty small, but the sound was LOUD! I'm sorry I can't provide a more accurate review, but again, I'm a layman! -CF

Great letter. This problem goes back a long way, and encompasses certain strains from all genres. I remember watching Elliot Sharp, Bobby Previte, Rhys Chatham, and all the other Downtowner musicians in the> eighties, night after night at "Tin Pan Alley" in midtown Manhattan (precursor to the Knitting Factory), and nobody moved a muscle to the barrages of rhythmic noise, which was generally high calibre, Muscle movement during shows was definitely uncool. My conclusion is that being "cool" can be very restrictive. I never really found out if the musicians endorsed the moroseness or not, but the trend certainly carried over to the Knitting Factory, where nobody danced to Alex Chilton doing groovy renditions of "Tip On In" and the like. Same goes for Yo La Tengo and Shonen Knife. Charlie James

This was never a pet peeve of mine, but it is now! DJ's should be required to dance/ cheerlead during other DJ's sets. It sets an example for everyone else. I was at an outdoor public soundlab event this weekend (thanks sam) and all the boys were sitting on one side and all the girls sitting on the other. The music was pumpin (DJ Spooky played a hot set, too!) and some of the Chinatown vendors and local homeless people were dancing, and a few kids were having fun, but again, dead dead dead. It looked like a high school dance. -CF

Hey guys, I've been asking this before but does anyone know where to get the touring schedule for Panasonic (haven't asked from Mute/Blast First yet, but according to my experiences big record labels rarely answer to mails...)? I could use it on my Panasonic page (www.sci.fi/~phinnweb/panasonic.html), since I know it would be of use to many people... The Panasonic and the Autechre cuts are quite good, the rest is...well...there are people who like that kind of stuff...I do love bits of about 10 secs out of every track....but... Yes. Many Merzbow records (esp. some CDs) are deliberate endurance tests, with dynamics that range from 11 to as low as 9, that map out certain areas of wideband, noisy textures over 50-75 minutes. This record contains two original Merzbow tracks. The mixes are all consistent with the approaches of the contributors. The Panasonic and Autechre mixes use sounds derived from Merzbow originals, but the approach and structure are entirely different. What this means is the package as a whole ranges from rhythmic (Autechre) to non-rhythmic (most of the rest), and extremely loud (Merzbow original & re/mega/mix) to extremely quiet. Worthwhile if you like the contributors, and if your tastes range much further into left-field than Autechre. --Mark
