Hello. Just some reviews and views from Oslo. Some of the records might be reviewed at the ambient- and/or UK-Dance lists, but I think you'll find some gems here. --- Bandulu - Now (UK Infonet 10") 2. Strange breakbeat-driven IDM'ish two-tracker. Some melody, but more as a recurrent motif than a melody. Heavy drums. Braincell - Too hot to trot (GER Harthouse 12") 2, 17.48. Deep and pulsating trance from Swedish Cari Lekebush. Much 909 and acidy sounds. Not too good on its own, but a more than good enough 'filler', so to say. Something to play before a foolproof anthem. Children of the Bong - Sirius sounds (UK Planet Dog CD) 8, 73.44. Banco de Gaia had a concert in Oslo some months ago, and the kids played before Marks, with great success. An eclectic mixture of advanced (mostly midtempo) 808/909 programming and filtering on various synths (I saw at least two 303's during the gig), this album is really fresh, and the children are, as the pressnote says, 'Planet Dog's best kept secret' (or something like that). Recommended for it's originality and uniqueness. Clubbed to Death - Clubbed to Death (CD experience) (UK Mo Wax CDS) 6, 40.00. An orchestral piece here from Rob Dougan, and in a host of mixes too. Some very melancholic strings layed over a phat beat makes almost for that "Unfinished sympathy" feeling, though that is of course impossible to achieve these days. Also there are mixes from Peshay, La Funk Mob and Carl Craig, who are not so true to the original. Drum Club, the - Live in Iceland (UK Sabrettes CD) 8, 60.02. Recorded over two nights and four locations, this album is a mixture of old and new tracks. Some straight-forward-head-banging techno, some dubbish strangeness, some calm chords...A varied album. Bit hard to recommend, actually. Then again I was never that much into Drum Club, anyway. But it has it moments. Electronic Eye - The idea of justice (UK Beyond CD) 9, 76.11. Eccentric Mr. Richard H. Kirk releases another weird and fascinating album on Beyond, home of the "Ambient dub"-series. Harsh solo sounds and actually some quite funky drums in places, I tell you. Hard to describe: better to say that it's been in my CD-player for two weeks now, rarely to be ejected. A good purchase. Funk D'Void - Jack me off (UK Soma 12") 4. More from Soma, who are really on a roll these days. Who are Funk D'Void? I don't know. Their music is harsh house with bubbling synths ("Jack me off"), Basic Channel'esque synth stabs with delay over a frantic hi-hat with small arpeggios slowly taking over ("Wide open"), epic synthchords over light and slow drums and claps with a sharp solosound ("Thank you - slowly") and a faster version in "Thank you". Recommended. Granny - Ty phoo/Rich tea (UK Seismic 12") 2. This one marks six releases so far from Paul Brogden's label and sees him collaborating with Claudio Giussani. Paul has done work as Clanger and POB and remixed the likes of Raze, Sasha and D:Ream. Claudio should be well known as one half of Union Jack (the other half being Simon Berry, who also is one half of Clanger). These two tracks are very different from other tracks that are out there, partly because of the dub-influence, the chant samples, the majestic chords, the acid-elements and the strange POB breakdowns. Very good 12". Wonder how the previous five are like? Herb n' Decay - Dub culture (UK Pterodactyl 12") 4. The first release from the sublabel of NINEBARecords. Dedicated to drum and bass (which might be anything these days), this one has a male soulvocal (not unlike Aaron Neville!) and unlikely brassamples over the fast jungle/breakbeats on the first A-side track ("When the party's over"), then moving on to more traditional jungle through the next three. All in all, a good debut. But who wrote and produced it? White labels are the DJ's burden. Luke Vibert - EP (UK Mo Wax CDS) 3, 20.39. Three tracks all in the strange and wonderful land of Vibert, who has posed as i.e. Wagon Christ and Plug before. "A polished solid" opens calmly with strings and nearly-orchestral-but-more-likely-to-be eastern sounds and a heavy filtered beat before all hell breaks loose on 1.34. I could go on and on about this and the other two tracks, but take my word for it; if you like the Wagon Christ material and also the Plug 12"es, just buy this. Almost as good as his Ruby remix. Mouse on Mars - Iaora Tahiti (UK Too Pure CD) 13, 69.02. This album is created by Germans Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner, and as on the last album, we are once again given strange aural treatments. Impossible to describe, but they have certainly put hard work into it. Excursions into electronica and samplemania? Pentatonik - Credo/Zeltgeist (UK Deviant CDS) 3, 20.35. R. Simeon Bowring certainly has his own interpretation of technological music. Here we have two tracks that are not on the "Anthology"-album. "Credo" is a lowpaced, but there are many elements moving in relation to each other. Some solo sounds over a calm beat and two main chords with variations is good. On "Zeltgeist" we have a deep bass, a slow beat and a an acoustic guitar to begin with, then a synth theme comes in. Then some electric guitar noise, followed by a breakdown. And then it all comes together. Very good, except for the electric guitar, which I loathe. Ruby - Paraffin (UK Creation double promo CDS) 8, 45.16. Yes, it's her from Sleeper. She's remixed by Richard Fearless, Red Snapper and our hero - Luke Vibert! The original is OK, the Fearless mixes are quite hip-hoppy and the Red Snapper mix is good. But the cream of the crops is of course the "Wagon Christ vocal" mix, which might very well be his best work to date. Exhibit A: A teasingly slow, but strong and insanely well programmed beat. Exhibit B: Various delays and pitchshifting effects on the totally dry voice (NO reverb!). Exhibit C: A beautiful organ with all new chords compared to the original version. This is an ansolutely necessity! Marketed as a double disc set, whereas the Vibert mix is on disc TWO. Don't go wrong. Thunderground - Canz/Singled out (UK Infonet 10") 2. A 10" from Bandulu's label, and I'm sorry to say it's not really that good. Quite monotonous (a bit too much) and very drumdriven, the two tracks seem too lend much of their idendity to the formula hard house, which makes them a bit anonymous. But I know there are many people who likes this particular brand of house. Transcend - 2001-2008 (UK Ntone CD) 8. I won't even bother trying to explain this weird shit. But listen to it, chances are you'll like it, and then you will be as dubbed out as the originators of these strange sounds (which might be Digidub, I think). Highly innovative. Could might as well be on Fax or Rather Interesting. Various - 101+303+808=Now form a band (UK Sabrettes CD) 11. A taster of what is to come from Sabrettes. As the title suggest, get a hold of the Roland machines, form a band and call Sabrettes. That is, if you know where SH, TB and TR should be placed when speaking of the numbers 101, 303 and 808. So, here we have acid and lots of it. Not particularly ingenius, but acid doesn't have to be either, right? Stomp around your appartment! Irritate your neighbour! --- Also, I'm made some reviews for the ambient- and UK-Dance lists. Check it out if you want to. Christian percf@notam.uio.no

Ken Ishii - Extra (R&S) ----------------------- Excellent 12" with remixes from some of the leading lights of the electronic scene. Ishii's original track is pretty good, interesting loops and structure (and superb Manga-style video, I'm told), but it's the remixes that really shine here. Luke Slater reworks it into a throbbing, blasting techno cut, very floor-friendly with blistering percussion. Dave Angel, man of the moment, works his 909 magic and adds his trademark melodic analogue loops and pads. A very typical production from a fine artist. Finally, Luke Vibert weirds it out in style, going for the drum 'n' bass angle but leaving enough electronic trickery from the original to keep the interest of non-junglists. Carlito - Heaven (Creative Source 1) ------------------------------------ But talking of drum'n'bass, this is a prime example of how it should be done. Is it Bukem? Whoever it is, 'Heaven' is a masterpiece of modern mellow jungle - exquisite strings, subtle vocal snippets and the best Rhodes chords since E-Z Rollers' 'Believe'. No overused amen breaks, just intricate light rolling beats chopped to perfection with deep bass. Fabio's label kicks off in style... St Germain - Alabama Blues (F Communications) --------------------------------------------- Ludovic Navarre continues the 'Boulevard' concept with this deep house track. Four mixes to choose from, two from Navarre and two from Todd Edwards. The latter ruins the vibe of the original and turns it into a cheesey disco-cut-up style garage tune, but Navarre's mixes keep it deep. Blues vocal snippets and typically crisp production make this a serious head-nodder. More to come next week (I might even get round to doing some albums)... see ya _________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk electronic musician/dj _________________________________________________

Well the shit has been piling up for the past month or so & I finally have a few free moments to get some reviews in. various: DigiDub 16 millionth of an inch (incoming) Not what you might expect from Incoming! This compilation is packed with thumping dancefloor tunes w/ 130+ bpm's. Ethnic & trippy samples worked into the mixes. #1 has quite the same feel as a fast Transglobal Underground tune. #2 is bouncy, less "ethnic" w/ a straightforward synth line & dubby background echoe. #3 sounds like a Zion Train tune speeded up +6. Overall this one sounds like what is left after throwing a Nation records compilation, a Rising High compilation and a Universal Egg compilation into a blender. Novel sounds, formulaic song structure, interesting to listen to at times, though probably my least favorite Incoming release (i don't feel this one will stand the test of time very well). Various: Trance Atlantic 2 (Volume) Well Volume seems to be pumping out the releases. The full listing for this is probably on their web site http://www.demon.co.uk/volume this one features a jungle tune w/ a jazzy feel by Jamie Myerson, a tune by K Hand that samples C&C's remix of Aretha Franklin's version of Deeper Love which is pretty good dance floor fare, but pales by comparison to the original tune which it samples. Josh Wink's "just a track" has some quirky synth sounds in it, but the monotonous Strictly Rhythm house beat is so stale even birds won't bite it. Wamdue kids' People is a bit formulaic, but much better than many of the other house tunes on this comp., a little like todd terry vs. coco steel & lovebomb (though a little more variation in the beat wouldn't hurt, but then again Volume tunes aren't generally the most innovative stuff around). Stand out tunes: Lenny Dee & the outlander's "Emotional response" has enough variation in melody, beats & synth sounds to keep your interest through it's duration & would make good dancefloor fare to boot. Single Cell Orchestra's Threefold sounds a little like Crystal Method & is about the only tune on this thing under 120 bpm's. Otherwise most of the tunes on this are throwaways.

Short and Sweet. T-Power-The Self Evident Truth of an Intuitive Mind Shout out to Greg 303 for the review of this a while ago, I found a copy finally, and this is the shit. Excellent fusion of techno and jungle. Mike Dred $ Peter Green-Beyond the Box-Excellent! Very well produced! Teknotika-The Invasion ep-Gigi Galaxy Weird combo of electro, tribal, monk chanting and a military style narration. Interesting! Analog Attack-Computer Controlled-DJax records Music for massive sound systems to be pumped at 3 am while the warehouse is lit by a green laser. If you like it deep and pumping this is the SHIT, the sound of a spaceship taking off into orbit! Sorta like the Aphex Twin (R and S style) or the Source. Heavy, well produced acid and techno. The Last Judgment ep-Cold Rush Records Originally released in 1993, my prayers to the techno god's were answered when I saw this had been repressed. 8 am the Fog track is absolutely kickin, it sort of sounds like a combo of Energy Flash and Metapharstic (sp?) by the Aphex Twin, while another keyboard whistle an U-Ziq type of melody. It moves me, but I am a sucker for techno that has the depth of the purist techno, with the excitement and spontaniety of the ravier stuff. Air liquide-Red-Smile Hot damn! Some wicked cuts on this one. Highlights being the cuts Interactive Warlords, Tanz der lemminge remix by dj Hell and Tom, Hal's favorite, and perhaps one of my favorite most emotional techno songs I have heard in a very long time "The theme from Robot Wars-system engaged remix by Vaporspace" fucking excellent! Very emotional without feeling too sappy or contrived. Crazy Puertorican vs. Blancitos-Butter beat records #2 Wicked hip hop and electrotronic trip hop....And some slamming old school rythyms, sort of like Dj Icee on a lot of hard psychedelics. Reviews of: Autechre: Tri Repetae (Warp) I have to say the hype about this album really had me excited about this release. Unfortunately, I feel it was sadly misplaced. After about two weeks of trying quite hard to like this release, I just haven't been able to do it. The entire album gives me a feeling that I have heard it all before. The best my roommate and I have been able to appreciate, was 1: being up at 4a.m. writing essays it sounded pretty good, and 2: being in a different room from where it was being played, it sounded pretty good, most likely because the mid-range frequencies were cut out, ie, the boring melodies had been taken out. Not a bad album, just not an original album. Autechre: Anvil Vapre (Warp) A four-tracker that has been discussed to death. Track #1 is great. #4 has so much potential, but spends 10 minutes going nowhere, and the others are forgettable. South of Market ep (Reflective) Three tracker from the Plaid boys plus others. Soon by Jonah Sharpe and Plaid does have the Black Dog feel to it. Nice clattery rhythms, but more sparsely laid out than the typical BDP tracks. The flip side has two tracks of Plaid + Mark Broom. The first one tends to sound like the Dog, while the second track has a 4/4 pulse that makes it suitable for the dancefloor. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the holographic sticker on the a side. It is a plain old spectrum, but when it spins on the turntable, it makes you pleasantly dizzy after 30 seconds of looking, and downright nauseous after a minute. Velocette ep (Reflective) Four tracker from (...). Definitely on the techno tip. Two tracks with the 4/4 pulse are suitable for any dancefloor, and two idm'ish tracks that are less appealing but still listenable. Kid Spatula: Spatula Freak (Reflective) Album of the year. Hands down. Mike Paradinas brings out the rag and polishes up the style that so impressed on Tango'n'Vectif. Nine tracks, of which the first seven are great, and the last two are so-so. Muted trumpets (again), synth cellos, and that ziq style percussion bring the house down on every track. If the percussion of Dance #3 doesn't at least make you fidget, it's time to call the ambulance. Track #4 takes the strings idea of Autechre's Silverside and takes it to upbeat idm heights. This album hasn't seen to much press on idm, so I'm guessing it's been hard to find, but snap one up quickly, it's the best thing I've heard all year. u-ziq: Salsa with Mesquite ep (Planet u) A fairly weak ep from Paradinas. Balsa Lightning does stand out as a great track, and the Jake Slazenger remix is quite well done. Track #4 (reflectiv?) is a clever take on country music, and the other tracks are fairly forgettable. Still, it is u-ziq, and that makes it more inventive than most releases nowadays. There Are Too Many Fools Following Too Many Rules (Irdial) We suffer to bring you beautiful music reads irdial's slogan on the inside jacket. A 2-CD comp of older material from the artists in irdial's stable, including Aqua Regia, Neuropolitique, and others. Containing songs mostly from 90-92, this comp is mostly in the techno/idm style of those years. To sum it up, the second CD is more impressive than the first, and if you are new to the techno scene and want some cool tunes from the days when house and techno weren't miles apart, this comp will mostly likely satisfy. BTW: Also picked up my promo of In Pine Effect. Not the CD, but a pine-tree shaped, pine-scented air freshener, with u-ziq, In Pine Effect on the front. Smells pine-y, but keeps the apartment foresty fresh. :) On the vocal idm thread: Slowdive's 5 ep came to mind. In Mind is a beautiful track. Also a separate cd of fairly by the numbers remixes from Reload and Bandulu. Both on Creation. Philip Downey

Disjecta-looking for snags (1 and 2)-Warp Just as I was hoping for. Dark mental wicked drum heavy intelligent techno on a tribal jungle tip. Made more for the head than the dancefloor. Sounds a lot like Freeform/Symon Pike. Richard Rocchi-It's just a melting pot of emotions-ACV records A bizzare looking cover on this doublepack with some absolutely fresh new wacky techno. Listening to this is like listening to Tango-n-Vectif when it first came out. A lot of digital sounding synths make for some real new sounding stuff, which leads me to believe I like it so much cause it sounds so different from the majority of techno. From harmonicas, to cheesey 70's lounge style keyboards, to some very spaced out acid all is done well. Nate Kraft-Man and Machine-Infra records This is the shit! Absolutely killer electro with an excellent smooth detroit synth line that really sticks in your head, a vocoder, some bleeps and bass. This will go down as an all time favorite of mine. Contains some real nice detroit techno tracks as well. Depth Charge-Queen of the Scorpion-DC records A low beat heavy sample and analog fest with some real spacey effects, and as usual mega bass. nice. The flip side contains what I call Trip Hop, not the sugar free variety, heavy shit. Fred 4-Fred Light District-Missle records Nothing too intelligent on this double pack, but it will move on the dancefloor. Includes a familar but kicking electro version. Produced by Cari Lekebusch, contains his signature distorted bass sounds. Derek 0--\___/--\___/---0 moses@teleport.com 0--\_______/--------0

I just thought I'd review some of the stuff I bought over Christmas...These are mostly the major releases and from 1995. De-Magnetized a Compilation Of Magnetic North Records (dbl CD) The Magnetic North label had been going until 1994 an in its two year long life managed 15 releases some of which are featured on this almost two hour compilation. The main artist featured is the notorious Dave Clarke under guises as Directional Force (the Peel Session has also just been released) and under the name of Grapite. All in all 8 of the tracks are acredited to Dave and most of them are stunners. The style is dance-floor, and the beats tend to be fast. 303 workouts by Woody McBride play out the first disc with a 13 minute stunner and the second disc shows how fast techno can get. Christian Vogel appears to know how fast his drum machine will go, and Russ Gabriel shows how intelligence and dance-floor techno can converge all under the Pseudoname of VCF. All in all a good retrospective of a label that was underground in it own respect and did have degrees of sucess and failure. Not for the easy listening pile. The only draw backs to the album was the rather annoying vocal samples looped on both of the DJ Hell tracks. Generally a good compilation and it does grow on you. Serius A Tresor Compilation. This is the latest compilation from the German Tresor label that seems to have released tracks by nearly all of the Detriot artists. Jeff Mills starts the compilation with a short track that cuts deep the harder detriot sound and then we have an all cast list featuring Eddie Flashing Fowlkes in top form, Model 500 with an excellent cut, Robert Hood gets funky need I say more. If you like detriot techno then this is for you. Fresh Emissions and Audio Emissions Output Compilation. Also a double CD this features Artists known mainly for previous releases on Andrew Weatheralls new label(s). Being starts the ball roling, slowly however at first, definately a hint of intelligence and ambience both his tracks lasting in excess of 10 minutes, Vermin have the next to tracks which totally devistated me, there is a resemblance to lots of different artists not many of which i'm able to place, but there's definately a hint of something different. I haven't heard of Vermin before buit i definately want to hear of them again. Then comes a track by Bishop wierd title-killer track, finally the first CD ends with a dub out techno/intelligent type beat track. The second CD is reminicent of the Emissions Echoic stuff, alot of LO-Fi as the cd starts With Conemelt. I saw there album a few days ago which looked as lo-fi as i've seen of any Techno so far. The produce some interesting sounds but to begin with I wasn't all too impressed. Panash have the next two tracks which revive the spirit of the first excellent disc, especially a track called Five-minutes of wierdness. Uriel have the following two tracks and they display the seventies style funk of starsky and Hutch type cop shows can be created by computers anbd synths...i wasn't too keen of the tacky-ness of the Uriel tracks. Then comes a track by two lone swordsmen, yep Andy Weatherall on a lo-fi type kick interesting track. All in all a worthwhile investment. JellyTones by Ken Ishii, I've never reviewed this so I thought I'd like to as it was my album of the year (excluding compilations). Great first track Extra....also single of the year (IMO) Ken Ishii shows his versitilaty by doing Jungle stuff, Heavy beated intelligence and delicate ambient-esque techno, a must. I got a load more stuff but thats all i can be bothered to review. If anyones got any furter info on Vermin I'd like to hear it. Bye for now, Nick.

Best of the past week: Various: tone tales from tomorrow too on ntone, mixed by colcut. Still haven't heard the JDJ by coldcut yet, but i'm definitely going to pick it up after listening to this almost non-stop over the past week. A beautiful mix of ambient & dubdued hop on the ntone & fax label. Artists include: Spacetime continuum, real life, hex, neotropic, path, journeyman, purr... CD is a CD-ROM "selling for the price of a normal CD" and supposedly allows to you to make your own mix w/ pieces from this 70+ min. mix, though I haven't had a chance to check this out. Only gripe: They use Joanna Law's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" in the mix, which I always drop in my radio-show & vowed to use if I ever have my own mix-CD release. Damn! Still the mix is so beautiful I can't hate them for doing it... Other good releases: Volume 15 + It: this has been around for a while now, but since I haven't noticed any discussion of it, I'd thought i'd mention it. This is the best Volume release in a LONG time! One full CD of music + one w/ three tracks & some CD-ROM stuff (which i still haven't checked out yet). Includes some good trip hop, electronic & indie rock stuff. Tracks include a Tranquility Bass remix of The Shamen, a new Ultramarine track, a previously unreleased remix of New Order's everythings gone green by Advent, a Cocteau Twins track, Rhythmicon (using a theremin)... Susumu Yokota: Ebi Ten (Space Teddy) This CD ranges from ambient to almost a jungle (break) beat. Musical style almost verges into distorted beats territory (aphex, black dog), but is much more melodical. Best comparison might be the new Spacetime continuum, only on a bit more of the experimental tip... Pick it up now while you can find it, you will definitely being hearing more from this guy in the future. Being: Selected transmissions (2XCD on Emission) Sabres of Paradise here w/ very minimal ambient sounds slowly building w/ beats & bleeps. Not all the tracks here hit you on first hearing...but is the time of thing that might grow on you if you are into more minimal sounds. Not very easy to find, in the US anyway... Three AD (Waveform): This has already been reviewed. most of the tracks are from ambient dub 4, which i don't have & can't give you further info on which. Starseeds track is nice, though not as impressive as their amazing track on Two AD. Insanity Sect track is from their recent limited ed. album which is nice, but also not as impressive as their earlier work -(for both) less on the vocal/spoken samples, which i felt both did extremely well. Coldcut track (signs) is nice Spacer: Atlas Earth (Pussyfoot) Space hop here in the Howie B vein. Nice, consistent, vocals on a few tracks aren't too disturbing... The first single from the album is quite nice, though i'm not sure which speed to play it :). Emit Explorer (Instinct) New em:t compilation from Instinct combines tracks from earlier ('95) releases & might have some new ones too (2295 is the last i have, so can't say fer sure what's on this). Some great tunes here to drop in any ambient dub set, a few faster than usual #'s...but definitely has something to please everyone. Right on the third guess. It's a double CD in a nasty plastic sleeve with virtually no information (minimalist ambient right!?) Very long (2 hours something). being 2xCD, SE006, selected emissions The first CD entitled Selected Transmissions is the 'best' of the 12"s tracks: mune ,mclaren ,fotts ,mavebeep pt 3 ,flee ,ayemooth The second CD entitled Point Two contains new material tracks: foamy ,ryam ,bootit ,toobib ,aquapan ,eeshab ,toyled ,quickie All tracks are by (dave) being and 'mune' is a collaboration with Claude Young. It's highly recommended by anyone who's heard it Any more info needed? Some 12"s from the last couple of months... Herbert - Part Two (Phono Series 500) ------------------------------------- 'Ooh Herbert! We're gonna have a hot night tonight' squeals the woman in the intro. And she's right. Mr Wishmountain dons his deep house hat, kicking off with 'Deeper', a superb slice of mellow yet pumping US house. 'Non-stop' is harder edged, with a shuffling, minimal groove, and 'Shuffler' jazzes it up with Deep Dish-style loops. House/techno hybrid which has quality stamped all over it. Herbert - Part Three (Phono Series 500) --------------------------------------- Getting even better, 'Butthead' samples, yes - Beavis and Butthead, with a tough, phunky percussive assualt and deep synths. 'People Who Make The Music' is the most commercial cut, a hypnotic, almost trancey feel with soft organs and synth washes floating above an irresistible, floor-filling groove. And 'Thinking Of You' closes this superb EP with more NY-style tough house flavour. So deep it's got two lights on its hard hat. 4AM - Underwater Blues (Muzique Tropique) ----------------------------------------- From Scotland's excellent Muzique Tropique comes this excellent mellow house EP. Three tracks of top-notch subterranean grooves, jazzy organ loops and sweet strings. This 'chill-out house' sound seems to be getting more and more popular as an alternative to the blandness of handbag and the aural assualt of techno, and this is a fine example. Soul Motive - Nightshift (Nuphonic) ----------------------------------- This promising label delivers another jazz-fuelled gem, four tracks of shuffling, funky house which is perfect for the post-club chill. Dave Wallace and Aquasky, all better known as jungle producers for Moving Shadow, try their hand at the deep house game, with the improvised moog solo of 'Into The Night' as an immediate stand-out. Jeff Mills - Java (Purpose Maker 001) ------------------------------------- The world's favorite DJ picks up where Axis 11 left off with four tracks of relentless, looping funk on his new label. 'Java' stands out, sounding like a remixed 'Casa' from Purpose Maker. Banging yet smooth, mechanic yet organic, Mr Mills' sound is distinctive and essential for all fans of quality techno. Sound Enforcer - Icon EP (Blunted) ---------------------------------- Dave Angel in his harder guise, with a doublepack of floor-fodder to satiate his admirers. No great surprises in the arrangement - build the drums up, break down into a synth loop, bring the drums in, tweak, break again and finish off. But the loops are immaculate, funk-filled and floor-filling - 'Circle' is a hypnotic housey masterpiece while 'Cross' is a hard-hitting barrage of sound. If you like Angel's more dance-based tracks this is essential. Frank De Wulf - Drums In A Grip (Harthouse) ------------------------------------------- An interesting record. Frank's original is a pounding, metallic breakbeat affair which shuffles along, banging and clunking and... not much else really. Wax Doctor takes the same breakbeat he always uses and... not much else really. Above the looped break he adds some strings and a sampled LFO synth, all pleasant enough but pretty tame compared to a lot of other drum & bass around. Photek - The Rain/Still Life (Razor's Edge) ------------------------------------------- Rupert Parkes lends his magic touch to Goldie and Dego's 'Still Life' on the new Metalheadz offshoot, coming up trumps with his customary blend of sharp breakbeat weaponry and atmospheres. He also reworks MET008's 'The Rain' to superb effect, proving once again who writes the jungle book. Subject 13 - Spirit Breakdown (Basement) ---------------------------------------- A Fabio favorite back in November, this classy, jazzy track gets released at last. Rolling, live-sounding beats and wicked Rhodes stabs make this a killer tune, a classic example of the jazzy sound Fabio's pushing. 'Can't Wait Tonight' on the flip is more traditional pad- fuelled artcore, but high quality nonetheless. Subject 13 - unknown (Creative Source promo) -------------------------------------------- These boys seem to be everywhere at the moment, with at least two other releases around. The 4th release keeps the smooth, dreamy quality of the others, the A-side using a mesmerising soft guitar riff and floating, epic strings, before introducing some wicked Rhodes stabs. The flip is more piano-based but just as good. unknown (Bang-in Tunes 11 promo) -------------------------------- After the brilliance of Urban Visions Volume 1 I was expecting something of a similiar calibre from Bang-in's next release. Unfortunately this is a bag of wank - one side features a huge, horrible out of tune sax loop over shite beats, and the other side has metallic loops over shite beats. Avoid. Albums this weekend... see ya ____________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk 'each new hour holds new chances for new beginnings' dj/musician/clubber/reviewer......scene but not herd ____________________________________________________

haven't heard much discussion of these, so here's a few comments. Better Daze - One Street over - Ubiquity- 15 tracks Nice variety of tunes here. The SF label, Ubiquity, gives the Ninja Tune label some competition on this one. Nice mix of (live) Acid Jazz, trippy hippy hop w/ live instrumentation & good vocals, including a remake of "golden brown". Gets my vote for the best US acid jazz/trip hop effort (so far) in '96. Look for upcoming single w/ Fila Brazillia remix. Planet Jazz - flying new world - Harthouse- 7 tracks - 46 min. This collection of cuts were rushed out because of the popularity of their recent 12" release. Some nice tunes in the same vein as recent Alter Ego & Hartfloor full-lengths. Though the vocals on a few tracks are nothing to rave home about. Synth jazz, sometimes getting up to a house beat in the rpm department. Phluide - bifidus acidophilus - Nation - 16 tracks - 76 min. I found this to be a mixed bag. Distort-freaks who also like conventional techno might like this one. Kind like a cross between the new MBM & Orbital albums...Most of the songs are fine & fit well in any rock tinged techno/hip hop set, though i found it not quite as interesting as the MBM CD when listening from beginning to end (but more compelling than the latest Orbital- am i the only one that finds "In Sides" a complete bore?). Templeroy - Deaf & Dumb - different drummer -10-15 tracks (3XLP, 2XCD) This has a nice flow, from ambient to dub to tripped up beats & house grooves. Some might find a few of the tracks a bit long... but all work extremely well for any ambient or dub dj & few would work well on the dancefloor to. "Core of the Earth" is here in a re-recorded version that foregrounds the vocals more than the original had. If you liked "Dubometer" & the "Bastard Tracks" comp. this will definitely satisfy your ambient dub urges. Chris KUSP

There is too much killer music out there! It is making me broke! Here is the cream of the crop that i just got. Anyone out there want to trade a mixtape or two? Electro and funky shit Funkee Ass Breaks Vol One-Cosmic records High fucking tech Miami bass and funky breaks. A very spacey edge to two of the tracks, with some serious vocoders and bass, top notch production, with a lot of cool new rythyms and even a female orgasm or two for the perverts, you know who you are. It is too bad most of that Miami break stuff was not this original sounding. Biochip C-Drop Me-Force Inc a lot of editing, fucking samplefest, crazy shit. This is the kind of stuff where you never know what could come out of the speakers. A few played out samples and drum beats, but the editing and production more than make up for it. Within Sound-C Beam ep-Axodya limited 004 This is some wicked shit. Mama. Minimal electro that grooves hard and sits high above just about everything else. Has some serious tweaky bass synths, and a with a melodic sound that will grow on you. Then there is another track that has a syrupy melody with some bassy beats, reminds me of Jega. Violet-Burn the Elastic-Mantronik remix-Sm;le This is bordering on the commercial side but it is nice to see a mantronik making current sounds. Very funky with some cool effects, and an old school "I know your gonna dig this" sample. Flashdancers on Acid-Shake your money maker/F.D.O.A.-right on your fuckin face mix Definetly inspired by the Chemical brothers, a little more distorted and the acid is a little dirtier. I like it, although this sound is getting to be a little formulaic. Produced by walker and Frank Heiss. .xo9 fzz ep-orbit records 003 Distortion up the backside on this one. Wow. Sounds like Drop bass records meeting some chicago house with some electro. Not too fast, with some nice beats, which are pretty funky. Fireball is the cut for me. Omar Santana-Dark Side of The Shroom remixes-Tricked out recordings Again this is bordering on the commercial side (ie: ravey) but if you like hard electro and funky breaks there are two nice nuggets on here. One is the Simply Jeff remix called Green Mushroom, that has a nice 303, some excellent breaks and a good human beatbox workout. Then there is the Hard hop Beats by the Hard Hop Heathen, which is a bonus beat thing with some nice distorted 808 beats. Event Related Potential-erp ep-Matrix Bleep fest! Lots of analog farting and bass with a definite weird feel to it, pretty abstract, some synthy parts that sound like the theme to a t.v. show. Good stuff with an electro feel. Jungle Ed Rush-Skylab-Metalheadz Massive bass fest, dark as dog droppings, deep as the grand canyon. Like taking a bath inside a subwoofer. File next to Source Direct. Finaly got a copy of Tech Steppin, fucking wicked shit, glad I read about that one on idm. derek

Up until last week I had my three favourite albums of the year all lined for my idm vote o' '96. These being Orbital, Black Dog, and Scala. But as luck would have it, two purchases in the last five days have blown that to hell and back with the funkmeter jammed on high. So, Global Goon: (Rephlex 038LP) Picked it up today, and it's been around the turntable once. Very impressive, whatever Grant may maintain it sounds alot like TAFKARDJ. just kidding. But listening to this it's obvious that roommate of his, had access to his gear, and maybe a little melodious influences. Beautiful melodies, all presented with some mid-tempo, groovy beats. This is a record I would use to introduce people to idm. Yep, there's singing, and the first track, St. Martin, is absolutely incomprehensible. But I was busy with dinner, so maybe another listen will clear things up. Lots of analogue warmth too. Genuinely a pleasurable album. Gary Moscheles: Shaped To Make Your Life Easier (SSR 171) Horrors of horrors. I bought it Friday in NYC for only $16, which I was impressed with. Listened to it Saturday, loved it, and then I Monday I couldn't find the album. After an hour long search, I finally found it in the garbage under my computer. While clearing off my desk, I guess it got swept away. Anyhow, this album kicks. Buy on sight. Megafunky, with some Bluff Limbo type beats going on underneath. Tons of vibe samples, and some saxophones for good measure. Kicks the hell out of the Jake Slazenger album from the summer, (which I'd trade somebody for an AFX HAB1). Also picked up: The best of Future Sound Records (Rephlex CAT 025LP) Eight tracks of Chicago house, all of which are done exactly the way house should be done. Nuff said. Is it true there were only 500 of these? Things I didn't buy: Autechre: Key Nell remixes. boring. Also, has the form come out for the end of year poll? I was off the list for turkey time, and want to place my vote. here's some reviews for y'all. though i don't know if that's quite relevant these days...;) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Paul W. Teebrooke..OWE002..Otherworld Mr. Teebrooke is going somewhere. With talent to spare, he forges two tracks of incredibly complex Detroit-inspired machine music. Witness the genius in its raw uncut form in this uncomprising 12" of abstract techno. Strictly for the head. 9/10 Endemic Void/Elixir..EVE001..EVES Some fresh breaks on display here, as well as live instrumentation, although not much is done with either. The AAA side, entitled Chronos, is where the goods are; an understated dark vibe prevails throughout, with horns in the right places, a haunting piano riff, and strings over the top. The flip side is more of a slinky jazz-lite affair with some delicious live improvisatory sax. Overall, pleasant but not very groundbreaking. 6/10 Mouse on Mars..Cache Couer Naif..Thrill Jockey/Too Pure Laetitia Sadier of Stereolab spins little French nothings over the signature Mouse on Mars sound: intergalactic whizzes and whirs bathed in gentle arcs of feedback and deep, dubby bass. Just received a couple of older CD's from +8's recent summer mail -order sale. C$35 for two full lengths that I haven't been able to track down in the 3 or so years that I've been buying IDM: Speedy J - Ginger Some what minimal in places but with excellent whooshing and fills a la G SPot. A good full cd that shows its youth and sets off Jochem's later work so nicely. I have not heard a track from this album previously save for Pepper from the LIVE album of 18 months ago. As I said to my sister at supper, "Isn't this happy music?" FUSE - Dimension Intrusion Wow. Having heard Richie Hawtin via Musik, Sheet One, his DJ MIXMAG disc, and then a DJ spot in Winnipeg last year I'm amazed at this work. Usually an artists earlier works aren't as well arranged or produced but this is amazingly full and lush! It reminds me of Artificial Intelligence II in spots but with slightly higher BPMs. The raw, minimal beats that build too slowly aren;t here. Oceasns of sound are splashed on the listener, with amazing melody and varied beats. Even the concept tunes like Train-Trac are stunning. For those that may not have been "into the music" in 1993 when this was released, pick it up. Its wonderful and you could probably find it in a used bin somewhere cause I'm sure some dumb ass, desperate for money to buy "new" music, pawned one off cause it's four years old. Wow. Must have had a stellar day at work. -- Dave Ross: Mild-mannered banker at dawn, exhausted Luddite by evening. http://www.mts.net/~daveross

Yip : I'd go with that. Afterall, the reviews are posted publicly to this list, with a distribution list of about 1000 (is that right???) So whoever wrote the stuff, can't be toooooo picky about it appearing on your web-site, I should think? It helps the rest of us, because I often clean out my files and wipe a lot of mails, and only later want to go back to something I read w*A*y back, only to realize it's lost forever. So please go ahead and thank you in advance. I *

I have to agree with the gonz-man here. The newbies should lurk a bit then start posting. Maybe an "if you like this album, then try that album" thing could be set up. I also feel that the idm review site should be getting more hits, since it could become a valuble resource. The guy running it should just rip down the reviews as they are posted, no need for permission, that takes too long. I say we start a 'clean up idm' campaign. who's with me??!! mult.

Here are some reviews I had sitting around. Enjoy. Schlammpeitziger Spacerokkmountainrutschquatier A-Musik Interested in seeing what electronica is really capable of? Tired of people saying that electronic music is without feeling? Then seek out this CD. This CD conjures up images of rolling sonic waves filled with simple melodies and complex patterns. This combined with shimmering beautiful tones helps create a new perspective on what music is capable of. This is electronic music with emotion and depth. Schlammpeitziger and the label A-musik are part of the new sound of Germany. Where other labels explore the same old dance cliches A-musik is forging new paths. Each release by the label shares a common bond of tonal exploitation. Schlammpeitziger's concentration is on electronics and the melodic qualities of music. It is that concentration that helps create cohesiveness not usually found in modern compositions. As a whole this is about structure and movement. Songs are densely layered and filled with meaning. Each sound is used for effect and emphasis. This is a symphony of electronics. The music is friendly and does not alienate. At times the songs take on a pop like quality that draw the listener in. The end result is experimental music that is not pretentious. An interesting side note is that Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars engineered this CD. Req Frequency Jams Skint Hip hop has many possible futures. Currently, this future seems to be sample heavy and based on hits of the 80's or at least that's what MTV wants us to believe. Beneath the processed images of MTV are the real improvisers. The artists who live hip hop. Req is one such artist. He is a Graffiti artist from England who has taken his talents and applied them to music. This music is heavily layered and very subtle. Think of listening to a hip hop song emanating from a moving car that is two blocks away from you. There is the sound of the beats and scratching but in between that are thick layers of obscurity. It requires a careful listen and patience. But the end result is a further appreciation of a phenomenal genre. This may not be the future of hip hop but it is certainty a path to it. Echo Park The Revolution of Everyday Life LO recordings It has many names. Some people call it progressive rock while others call it post rock. Call it what you will but make sure to listen. This is a CD Sonic Youth should have made under an experimental alias (in fact Thurston Moore plays on a couple of tracks). Overall, the sounds produced on the CD are the result of clean urban beats combined with treated guitar and synth work. From the beginning you know you are in for a strange trip. The beat begins innocent enough but then it is followed by female ramblings, which intrigue and annoy the listener at the same time. The guitars start in and take on an ominous metallic quality. Layered upon that is a repetitive bass line that functions as a reminder of how odd things can get. As you traverse the length of the CD the songs get more experimental but they do not loose focus. That is not to say that pop elements are not present. However, they are warped into something new and beautiful. Melodies are present but they are not right. The music serves as a lesson of what is still possible in rock. A lesson more people should pay attention to. -daniel

got some new stuff in the mail today- some very quick skimming. plastikman-artifakts this was supposed to be the 3rd part of the plastikman trilogy, but hawtin was banned from the u.s. for a while and everything got backed up. these tracks (7) were from after musik and before consumed and were supposed to be a continuation of minimal tracks found on sheet one, and they are. think a blend of sheet one and concept 1 and you are most of the way there. the last two tracks, however, sound like they belong on an ai3 comp. wagon christ-tally ho i dont get into downtempo much, but this is a little more uptempo and focused than big soup, which i found to be a bit sprawling. pretty straightforward gear from vibert. 2 lone swordsmen-bag of blue sparks first purchase of 2ls stuff and sounds ok. hard to compare to other weatherall stuff as i dont really have any. not as intense as the track on we are reasonable people. nice electro tinges and a vocoder on the last track. more electonic/electro than most warp stuff of late. arovane- 12' on din not the usual snap/crackle/pop of bc/din material. take funkstorung and slow it way down. another gem for the bc crew. cl crossing my fingers that this makes the 1% of reviews that are worthy of attention.

Two quick questions: Why was Hawtin banned from the US? Is there an AI3 comp? Or was that just an "it would fit in here" type deal? He used to hop over the border from Windsor to Detroit all the time to spin at parties, but didn't tell the customs folks that he would be working while he was in the US (which he was since he was getting paid for it). I guess they got suspicious about this guy constantly crossing over with a couple of crates of records in his car and decided to do some investigating. Once they found out the real story, he was banned from the US for a period of time. Or at least that's the story I've been told. Greg

E.A.R. Data Rape made from sounds consisting of altered speak n spells. not as original as i'd hoped. lots of echo, distortion and reverb, but basically a series of somewhat harsh ditgital ambient soundscapes that all have a similiar pulsating feel. it at some points reminds me of disc actually. the title seems very appropriate after a couple of listens :) Freeform Pattern Tub holy jesus! style wise this explores as much ground (if not more) than the new low res, has that same 'homemade' feel as the black dog's music for adverts and simply amazing. childlish poking, ambient soundscapes, mellow funky jazz gone bad & on & on. for those previously turned off by freeform's more abstract works (elastic speakers, heteriachy, etc) this is much more structured and easier to take in... completely different material all together. freeform has always been a favorite, but this is really it. in time, this will sit next to the black dog's music for adverts as 'the complete shit' in my book. why not more talk on this???? are you people listening?????? Varathane Ruddy Brown Primer a few list members i find it very useful to list to in regards to recommendations of stuff i might like... lance, andrew duke, jason tar, kid66669, greg c., etc. one of them happens to be william harris, who pointed out the post about the hydrant stuff... checked this out after he directed me to some realaudio that he enjoyed. anyways, enough on props :) good stuff. sort of a blend of older afx/warp style fun. having just given another listen to the blip bleep comp i'm finding that some of this would really fit into the idea of the comp very well (ie music for imaginary video games) lots of bleepy blippy sounds, happy go lucky melodies in abundance. fans of saw 1 will surely appreciate this... hopefully be posting reviews of cex, disc, kid66669, va - emanate, va - blip bleep and some other fun stuff later today also... i apologize for the lack of review skill on my part :) brap@sonic.net icq_12645306 http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ (now with live visuals (cam.html)) coming sooner than later: sfwd0004 - pre-mil·len·ni·um soundscapes 12" our future has never been so frightening: http://williamshatner.com/

definately touches on the funkier side! there's even a kenny g second there (only a sec or so, but its there, i swear!) i bought this hoping that pyke had plunged further down the abstract path that he had previously explored but seems he left that far behind on this release. brap@sonic.net icq_12645306 http://www.sonic.net/~brap/ (now with live visuals (cam.html)) coming sooner than later: sfwd0004 - pre-mil·len·ni·um soundscapes 12" our future has never been so frightening: http://williamshatner.com/

quick reviews of 3 new releases. mika vainio-ydin mika goes ambient here, nary a beat except an occassional echoed, distorted bass drum. moves away from the sine waves and coldness usually associated with panasonic and his other solo work. warm, but very dark for the most part. lots of very low rumblings across the 74 minutes of this cd. not unlike the ambient- isolationism 2xcd on virgin or some broken machinery. (its the first release on wavetrap) 20 to 2000 scanner not being too familiar with mr rimbaud, i was expecting a 20 minute excerpt of a phone call, but not really any samples to find except a an infrequent middle-eastern sounding guy that would be at home on an orb or fsol single. anyway, its one track moving slowly until a tick and a kick drum come in around 10 min. it continues plodding along and then a hi-hat comes in and it starts to sound pretty brinkmann-esque. about as laid back as possible with a beat. nice to have if you are getting all of them, but if you are picking and choosing, there might be a couple of others to look for first. monolake gobi the desert ep monolake03 shimmering, crackling, crisp, booming. if you sleep with the windows open and are near crickets, this will blend in perfectly. there is is a variety of chirping throughout the one track36 minute disc, along with some serious bass. the bass hits are far enough apart that i think this would qualify as ambient, but with all the foreground movement and shifts, it certainly isnt boring. if you have and like interstate, this is a definite winner and if you dont then you have something new to go buy. dont listen to all 3 of these discs in the same day if you need to concentrate on anything. cl

My take on this is quite different. While the release isn't as "out there" as previous items in the series I feel that it is essential. It is just good music. At first the music is rather ambient with what seems to be a processed female voice repeating a statement over and over. The ambience it creates is rather nice and somewhat engrossing. But slowly the track develops into a minimal cologne style techno track. That is where the beauty of the song is. In the fact that it can move from one style to another seemlessly. What you are left with is 20 minutes of mesmerizing music. -daniel Head Monkey Mad Monkey Records http://monkey.eliteware.com
