Anyone into Sci-fi books *has* to check out Ken McLeod. I'm sure you probably already have, but I just wanted to voice that this guy's books are amazing. Can't get enough of the future politics stuff! Any other recommendations along this line (political sci-fi, etc)? A nice change from your usual tech-enthusiasm and the sort of Japanese, well, Japanese stuff. Another of my favorites is Stanislaw Lem... tops! Is there any Russian sci-fi? maybe from back in the cold war days? ,adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! Iain M Banks is also excellent, he's mates with MacLeod and they have quite similar styles. Not as much politics in there though, altough Banks shares his Socialist Libertarian view... Also check out his fiction (as Iain Banks) Wasp Factory and The Crow Road especially...

ian macdonald is a really good writer who includes political/social issues as part of his writing, his major subject though is nanotechnology. he is one of the most inventive writers that i have come acrossin recent years, his is true speculative fiction that informs on the present as well as the future. though a lot of his stuff is out of print at the moment try, 'necroville' (published in the u.s. and still available as 'the terminal cafe') possibly his best/most entertaining book. 'hearts, hands and voices' 'speaking in tongues' (a collection of excellent short stories) he has also had stories published in the 'new worlds' series which is without doubt one the best collections of anthologies of speculative/science fiction ever published. tenchi x

actually, first i should correct myself - spelled the last name wrong (it's MacLeod) He's Scottish and has written four books in a loose series of "future history" type stuff, centering around humanity going into space, and involving artificial intelligence and related philosophical tangles - but the big draw is how he laces everything with socio-political dialog. Communism, anarchy, capitalism, utopian thoughts, how technology will effect them. *real* politics in sci-fi is a rare thing. There's an article he wrote here: http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/iplus/nonfiction/kensf.htm And an interview with him here: http://www.webart.hr/nrnm/eng/intvu/kmint.html interesting reads .adam --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm sure I'm telling you something you already know but.... JG Ballard's writing is very political (I'm just munching through the recently published collected short stories). Neal Stephenson's Snowcrash and Diamond Age always struck me as interesting views of how national politics might develop. Burroughs' Interzone, another. Someone wrote the following to me, though I haven't read any yet:

Sounds like Macleod might be interesting too, cheers, Colin. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Ugh. Wasp Factory was the first thing I'd read in a long time where I was so thoroughly dismayed after reading it. I couldn't believe I'd wasted that time. Horrible dreadful lame book. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
