ian macdonald is a really good writer who includes political/social issues
as part of his writing, his major subject though is nanotechnology. he is
one of the most inventive writers that i have come acrossin recent years,
his is true speculative fiction that informs on the present as well as the
future.
though a lot of his stuff is out of print at the moment try,
'necroville' (published in the u.s. and still available as 'the terminal
cafe') possibly his best/most entertaining book.
'hearts, hands and voices'
'speaking in tongues' (a collection of excellent short stories)
he has also had stories published in the 'new worlds' series which is
without doubt one the best collections of anthologies of speculative/science
fiction ever published.
