I have a gut feeling it will be much better because the previous model was so darn fragile. My sysadmin friend stopped buying the old 15inchers for her company because they all got destroyed rather quickly ... great machine but not good for people who will knock them around ... Apple's case design is awesome. I have a 14in ibook I use for audio and I'm perfectly happy with it ... kicks ass ... dave On Fri, 11 Apr 2003, David Dow wrote:

Just an FYI: they do like most other laptop companies and simply buy the cases from a third party in some asian country. so you could get them for basically any laptop. of course, getting the rest of the parts probably wouldn't make it worthwhile. but it certainly wouldn't be difficult for other companies to design laptops the same way, as most do very little designing of their own. As far as the decision of buying a laptop goes, generally the best idea nowadays is to go with what you have. If you're running Windows and work really well in it, unless you feel like totally changing both how you work and what you work with, stick with a pc (that, and your wallet will thank you). If you use a mac and like the mac, wait a while for the new 15" powerbooks with a better case. -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't currently use a computer for music...Have been doing everything on an ASR-X Pro and assorted gear...Now ready to make the jump. Just looking for ideas...I want something with as few limitations as possible. Willing to spend as much as needed within reason...any comments on software?? There is so much out there I don't really know where to start...I would like something that would allow me to easily combine music and video compositions and manipulate... Well, for "pro" stuff, there's Nuendo from Cubase that lets you do audio/video stuff, and on the PC side there's also Vegas and some other programs. For mac, there's the new Logic and some other stuff too. With the new Core Audio setup on OSX, you'll probably run into fewer snags on OS10.whatever. It's pretty nice for just plugging stuff in and having it work. -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, if you are a mac person and you NEED to have a laptop, then that's probably the best choice. I saw the new 17" powerbook laptop at a store the other day and its size is almost comical. Its kind of a ridiculous laptop. Video/Audio production is a little bit vague so I'm not sure exactly what our needs are, but in case you don't necessarily need all the portability that goes with a laptop and you might want a PC, I'd reccomend a Shuttle (us.shuttle.com). I recently built one of these computers and I think its amazing and for my needs (which includes the occasional video projection/installation), its portable enough to easily put in a duffle bag to get it to point B. These little computers are the future! -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: David Dow <taoconductor@yahoo.com> Date: Friday, April 11, 2003 1:42 pm Subject: [idm] Hardware

I would either splurge for the 17" or wait for the updated, aluminum-enclosed 15" that *should* be announced soon-ish. In addition to the aluminum enclosure, it should have all the new goodies that the 17" and 12" share: AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth, FireWire 800, etc. Maybe it'll even have the self-adjusting keyboard light, just for added toy value. Don't get the 12", though: the lack of L3 cache and limited RAM ceiling are likely to become impediments for your A/V work at some point. I'm in the same boat. I hate waiting. But the 17" is so very pricey...
