Mood-wise, I hear some similarity in Electric Birds' 'Strata Frames' and maybe even the 'Ele' / 'Entain' by Vladislav Delay. But I don't think anyone really has that housey feel that Jan Jelinek gets in there with the more ambient and conceptual aspects. I think the Delay comparison/recommendation is very apt. My opinion about the Jelinek record differs from what I've heard the majority of people say. I picked it up after all the praise I saw, even from people whose tastes I trust, but wasn't impressed. I actually got rid of it. I'd much rather listen to Delay's records, who I thought it sounded very similar to. I thought it had too much of what I call a "fashion boutique house" feel, the kind of stuff they'd play at like an Armani store or sumthin. That kind of music where the harmony is just static minor seventh chords modulating up and down really annoys me. It's the ultimate cliche when dance music people try to sound "jazzy". I would have to agree-I was none too impressed with this record, especially after hearing all the praise of it. Vladislav Delay runs circles around this material IMO. I find Jelinek's releases under the Farben moniker more enjoyable than his 'loop finding jazz' stuff. one of the things i like about loop finding jazz is that it doesn't have a particularly housey feel - the "thud thud thud thud" kick drum on every quarter note is conspicuously absent... farben tends to be housier, and it's not exactly what i'm looking for. i agree about dance music people trying to sound "jazzy", but i'd say here it works because jelinek is only taking the textures from jazz - this music is so minimal as to shove texture right into the foreground of listening interest... it's not like there are wailing sax solos or anything. i'd say the minimal harmony is an aesthetic choice - it forces you to pay attention to the textures, and injects a sense of static numbness. ...that i've had mini-skirted "fashion boutique" type girls come up to me when i put this on and say "this music is making me uncomfortable" makes me feel even better about it. ;) j --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, I didn't particularly like 'loop-finding-jazz-records' either, but his more purely house stuff is good house, IMO. Stuff like his Farben 12"s on Klang Electronic. I also really enjoy his Gramm album on Source (the German one), but he did describe it himself as a kind of lounge music. If you go to it expecting something at all like Vladislav Delay you'll be disappointed. Just thought I'd put in my 2 cents in case that's all you've heard of Jelinek's releases. Hmmm...admittedly, 'Entain' and 'Naima' are the only Vladislav Delay releases I have (not counting Luomo) but I hear very little similarity between them and LFJR. I think some of you are put off because it lacks Delay's aggressive production, but to me, the fact that he managed to avoid that while keeping his tracks consistently engaging is the album's real achievement. I dunno, I'm tempted to use words like 'restraint', 'poise', 'delicacy'. But Andrei -- I think that's the whole point of the CD -- he didn't put those chords in there to 'sound jazzy', he used samples from actual jazz records and manipulated them. So even though we can't even tell whether the sounds we hear originally came from piano, guitar, kalimba, or whatever, we can still hear the original notes that were played -- jazz chord voicings. I think the abstract jazzy vibe is cool... Obviously it's not constructed like jazz, but harmonically and especially melodically it wasn't "jazzy". The thought struck me that the whole sampling of jazz records angle was more just marketing. i think that sampling on this record wasn't done the way most people think of sampling - it's doesn't sound like he was taking loops or phrases or beats, more like a horn or string sounds stretched waaaaaay out to begome his pads, or a little record pop becoming his rhythm... this way he gets somewhat jazzy textures without using much of what harmonically or melodically makes music jazz. there isn't much in the way of melody on the record anyway... i guess this is part of why i like the record so much - i love it when people sample something and use it in a completely different context. taking just the barest minimum of a sound and using your digital tools to scuplt it into something miles away from its source... it's postmodern and it's funky! j --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Jelinek has written that he is very interested in placing formal restrictions on his music to see what he can achieve without breaking them. On 'loop-finding-jazz-records' I understand his two limitations were that he would use only samples from jazz records, and that every track would be an experiment in using the shifting loop points function on his sampler. I'd say that the latter precludes the possibility of the results being like jazz. So it may have been a marketing decision to play up this angle, but on Jelinek's part (unless he's just making shit up after the fact) the use of jazz samples was an artistic choice. I can hear the jazz sounds coming through -- like the voicings of the chords, and the overall ambience/vibe. It's not on an overt level, though, the connection is almost subliminal because he's mutated his samples so much.
