I've personally been a big fan of Capcom's music for their games. A friend of mine in college used to download Mega Man MIDI files and remix them with his gear. The Shadow Man level music with a DX100 bassline and a techstep rhythm track is something to behold indeed, IMO. Aside from Mega Man, they also did Bionic Commando, which remains my all-time favorite video game music (the NES version) and even lately their stuff has been sounding top-notch- some friend of mine was playing a version of Street Fighter on Dreamcast and God Help Me I almost bought the Japanese CD of the soundtrack to that sucker. Arcade-wise, I always thought the 194x series of shmups and the Marvel Vs. Capcom games sounded pretty damn nice as well. Capcom needs to do a remix project, dammit. You guys brought my Bionic Commando itch out of remission again. I promised myself not to get sucked up into this thread, but since I enjoy a MAME break every day at work... * METROID Well, for the obvious reason... * XEVIOUS Without question, one of the most idm. Minimal, spacey, repetitive, and lots of high frequency metal clinkiness. * MR. DO RUN RUN Not the annoying monotonous digi-calliope of the original Mr. Do but the rather shuffly Residents-y soundtrack to one of the weirder Mr. Do offshoots, where Mr. Do runs around a mostly flat board eating up dots and various fruit while trying to enclose these little beasties into enclosed right-angled shapes, QIX style. Mr Do's signature bouncy bullet adds nice texture to the oddball soundtrack * PAPERBOY Probably the most "urban" of any memorable video game soundtrack. MORE COWBELL! * REACTOR ROCKS! Nice crusty digi-guitar in some low-freq laser pulse. * MAD PLANETS Nice crunchy texture to the music, and the decimation of planets. * Any Williams game (DEFENDER, ROBOTRON, JOUST, BUBBLES, ETC) * SINISTAR "Beware... I Live". This practically invented "Come To Daddy". * OMEGA RACE Its tempo-changing single-note half-step alternations made the industrial/EBM genre possible. * Q-BERT Not as much for the music as the army of digi-wet-plunger sounds of hopping, and the random blabberings of Q-bert, Slick, Sam, Ugg, and WrongWay Sigh. Did I mention that Bentley Rhythm Ace did a song for a video game? "Theme From Gutbuster" ======================================================================= Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> ======================================================================= --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like the soundtrack to Super Contra on the Super Nintendo very much. Bomb the Bass did the music to Xenon 2 on the Amiga 500 if I remember correctly... it's a long time ago since I played the game. Also Chris Hülsbecks Turrican (2) Soundtrack is very good afair. Not to forget the Nobue Uematsu osts for the Final Fantasy series..not very IDMish though. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

You beat me to it, TETRISPHERE definately has one of the great soundtracks for video games. And since the word tetris is up there already, Tetris Attack for the Super Nintendo, and its superior N64 spawn, Pokemon Puzzle League(little to nothing to do with Pokemon, not that theres anything wrong with Pokemon) are the best tetris games out there. I feel its safe to mention that because I would hope most idm nerds dig tetris puzzle games that require fast reflexes and play great to Squarepusher. On Fri, 6 Jul 2001, Alexandre Boutin wrote:

I love the old Game Boy and the Snes versions. I don't know how it is with you but when I listen to a whole CD all the way through I like to play Video Games like Wave Race 64 or 1080 Snowboarding while listening to the music. Anyone here who is so calm that he sits down and only listens to the music?

I still have the .xm module sitting around somewhere, a masterpiece of channel and memory use that was. Sadly it never gets played now that I have the original.

I was tempted by his remastered release of the soundtrack, but fear much of the lo-fi that make the memory so fond would be lost in the translation. Although they were some fine cheesy compositions on there, it was the beautfil arpeggio that paula produced that got my juices flowing. Has anyone heard this album release? Sadly it never gets played now that I > have the original.
The original was called Megablast. The conversion to .mod was done by C64 music legend David Whittaker from memory. Although if you want to hear a masterpiece of channel use, grab the PC version of X2 where David compacts three channels (lead, bass and drums/fx) into one channel on the PC speaker using a c64 style arppegio effect. The PC version of Speedball is in the same boat, also done by Whittaker i think. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Also 'Magic Pockets' by the bitmap brothers used a similar set up when converting Betty Boo's - Doing the Do. sadly though it is purely instrumental and only a loop of about 12 secs, but it still sounded great at the time. I don't know, but i would assume that whittaker did this conversion as xenon is by the b-bro's too.

If I am not mistaken .. Coldcut [ or at least one of them ] did the soundtrack to a crazy Amiga 500 game that didn't get much press attention .. it was called something like 'Team Banana' .. all hyper colour scheme and bad graphics. of course that Hardwar PC game from a few yrs back had AFX / Ae / LFO etc. Tim.
