heheh! :) Ya...I may be fed up with Warp, but not enough to waste a stamp or LD charges on them... so I thought if someone happens to talk with them, to pass the word about the quality of their vinyl... -kc

Sure is, and it's a darn good one. Greg has done an excellent job on it. http://www.ncl.ac.uk/~n264671/wap-indx.html -@ -- ((>a u r i c l e<))

Quite possibly never. Greg has left Uni, so as far as I know he is unable to maintain that site. If the sample clearance issue ever gets sorted out, I guess the sounds will reappear wherever the discog is reinstated. True and untrue. I have left university, but the site will remain up (and maintained) until August before being replaced with more purpose built pages.

I'm sitting here, trying to write something about Warp and the place it's had in my musical history, and I'm listening to Amber, which was not only the first Warp album I ever bought, but the first "electronica" I ever bought. Aphex's SAWII followed shortly thereafter. I bought Amber in Providence, RI, at Fast Forward -- the record store I visited weekly, where I bought all my emo and hardcore and indie rock. Judy was the "metal chick" there, the expert in all things hard and fast and loud; Ron was the "techno guy," a veteran of acid house and basically the only person in Providence who knew shit about experimental techno. I'd gone in one day to pick up, I dunno, the latest release on Gravity or something. I'd just gotten back from Turkey, and as chance would have it, Autechre's Amber stared up at me from the racks, emblazoned with a luscious photograph from Turkey's Cappadoccia region. I'd just been there, it was one of the most incredible places I'd ever seen (still is). So I bought the record on sight, unheard, brought it home, and quickly had my mind rearranged. What was your first Warp record, and how'd you get turned on? (This is all a way of saying thank you to Rob Mitchell -- you changed my world, more than a little. RIP.) Philip

[nice thread BTW] Warp entered my life with (and this makes me feel old) TestOne by Sweet Exorcist, I heard it on the radio and just *had* to buy it... since then there have been other pivotal moments, AI-1 really changed my view on the music that I was creating - "hey, I can carry on doing what I do and people might actually be interested!"; SAWII still transports me (I don't know where); Confield makes me think; and Go Plastic just makes me laugh out loud.... My first Warp cd was probably Incunabula from Autechre. I had heard some Aphex Twin before (my first ever 'idm' was a tape of AFX and Analogue Bubblebath stuff), but Incunabula and the non-Warp cd SAW1 were what hooked me... Incunabula is still one of my all-time favourite albums. And Warp is a very dominant label in my record-collection. It's shaped my taste and my music... i remember listening to a local radio station in budapest called Fiksz Radio, back in the beginning of 1997. there was an interesting show every monday or tuesday i can't recall exactly, it was called 'Das Labor'. they played hard to find and really interesting tunes. there i heard muslimgauze and aphex twin for the first time. they played 'the waxen pith' from ...I Care Because You Do, and it was like nothing else i could compare to. then i bought the album and another one called 'RDJ album', both with scary faces on the sleeve. then started something that has not finished yet, and will not, fortunately. before, i was a big depeche fan, but that moment totally changed me, i still listen to their music and follow their carreer, but my musical taste become much more experimental-orientated. thank you Warp that it all could happen, thank you Rob, may you rest in peace. bias. Yes, excellent thread. My first Warp record (and my first idm record) was either Polygon Window or Black Dog's Bytes, the first in Detroit, the second in St. Louis. Whenever anyone mentions having their head re-arranged by a piece of music, or just fundamentally changed, I immediately think of listening to Bytes on my way back from St. Louis during the summer of 1993. My previous musical diet was ambient-house (Orb, FSOL) alternative-dance (New Order, Stone Roses), industrial (Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire) and a little bit of indie rock and hip-hop. Those may have paved the way (a bit) for Bytes, but when I listened to it the first time, I had *no* idea what I was hearing. It reminded me of electro (that wasn't necessarily a good thing -- I hadn't thought of electro since I was ten and heard Rockit or some other breakdancing theme) and it also reminded me of the Terminator soundtrack, that brutal synth and those militaristic drums. I can remember putting it away for awhile; I didn't exactly dislike it, but back then I didn't listen to records that didn't make sense. I'm sure the next week I was back listening to Lush or Ride or some other band, but all the while, my head was being rewired so I'd start connecting with Warp the next time I heard one of their records; sure enough, over the next few months, I picked up all the entries in the Artificial Intelligence series and that was the beginning of the end... ;> Favorite Tracks: Object Orient, Clan (Mongol Hordes), Merck --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think that parallels a lot of people's experience. I'll admit to being a total dork and buying an early Moby EP as my first experience to 'modern' electronic music. But what is interesting to me is the direct line, in some respects the indie rock of the time that was good was a giant arrow pointing towards electronic music -- My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Cocteau Twins, Curve, and especially Seefeel all were a direct path to Aphex Twin and the like. And even before that -- Brian Eno "Taking Tiger Mountain By Stretegy", "Before and After Science", Soft Machine "Soft Weed Factor", Kraftwerk, Tom Tom Club, B52s? Giorgio Moroder? In a sense hearing Warp records was like realizing "oh THAT's what they were on about in 1975..." There wasn't a huge divide between Rawk, Pop and electronic music in the 70s, like there is today. Kraftwerk had songs on the radio. Donna Summer "I Feel Love" was in rotation with "Sweet Home Alabama" if you can believe it. Hearing Kraftwerk on a car radio was a major revelation. My first Warp CD was 'Quoth' which did a complete brain re-arranging. I don't know why this track isn't like 'Spastic' -- a total rave anthem. That's still my all time favorite left field mixing track. You can put it with Tangerine dream, you can put it with Thomas Brinkmann, pretty much anything, and it's brilliant. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I came into IDM mainly from the industrial side of things. I was heavily into Skinny Puppy, Cabaret Voltaire, Ministry, the Wax Trax crew, etc. in the last half of the 80s, but by the early 90s, I was pretty tired of that stuff. A friend turned me on to Orbital and The Orb, which I sort of dug. And then I saw Greg Earle (you still here, G.?), a fellow old school rivethead, ranting and raving on rec.music.industrial about this new artist named Aphex Twin who was blowing his mind. I went looking for some Aphex stuff, and the first thing I found was the Polygon Window album. While it didn't have the same initial "WOW!" factor as some other albums (i.e. I still remember the first time I listened to Ministry "Twitch", My Bloody Valentine "Loveless" & The Jesus and Mary Chain "Psychocandy"), I thought it was pretty cool. Soon after that, another friend convinced me to check out the "See The Light" tour with Vapourspace, Orbital, Aphex and Moby. I thought Moby was crap, and Vapourspace & Orbital were pretty cool, but Aphex COMPLETELY rocked my ass. Loud and raw and noisy and more "industrial" than anything I'd heard in ages. I was converted, and followed Warp (and Rephlex and Clear and...) pretty faithfully from that point on. Thanks, Rob. LFO's "LFO" on vinyl. After that I remember seeing Warp's name regularly popping up in NME's Top 40 singles list each week. The Chart Show (Saturday morning music video show) also regularly featured an Indie Top 10 and the likes of Tricky Disco, Sweet Exorcist, LFO and Nightmares on Wax regularly appeared on it. LFO's "Frequencies" and Nightmares on Wax's "A Word of Science" were the first full-length Warp albums I bought and they (amongst a few other artists, such as 808 State and the Orb) completely changed the way I thought about music. From that moment on, buying every single new release on Warp became a matter of habit, which I've kept up to this day. -- Mark Stevens http://www.insertdisc.com/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

unlike most of you, it seems, i was a little late in the conversion game... my first warp release was the r.d.james album because up until hearing that i thought that electronic music symbolized the bastardization of acoustic or live sounds, i thought that machines made the music... so, when i heard aphex twin, and specifically that album, it came as quite a shock to hear these NEW sounds configured in these totally unique and original ways... it changed the way i looked not just at electronic music, but ALL music in general. i've never been the same musically, and i'd have never begun making electronic music (i think i can presume) if it hadn't been for the r.d.james album. thank you, rob, i hope you're well. with love, gregory ===== ************************* cd-r's for sale or trade******************* jean paul l'asthme: 'unstuck your eyeglue'* ********************************&********** __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? my first experience with Warp was the 'lovely' and 'quite good' and also 'delightful' album: BLAHBLAH by BLAHAAHAKHH. It came out before Warp went into business, via a transmission from the Astral Plane straight from Richard D. James' brain. I guess that was back in '78 when I was first starting to experiment with IDM. Good thing that guy died so I could let everyone on this list know how proud I am of myself for getting into this before everyone else. ppbbtt. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? My first Warp experience was the Polygon Window album, which a mate played to me some time in 92 (or maybe slightly earlier) when I visited him in Manchester. We'd met at university a few years before and had a history of introducing each other to new music: I got Glass, Reich, Pet Shop Boys and a re-assessment of Mike Oldfield from him, he got Tangerine Dream, Eno and possibly Laurie Anderson from me. (A fair trade? Discuss...) Other than TD and Eno old & new, I'd also been enjoying some of the more commercial rave/hiphop music of the time (Bomb the Bass, MARRS, Coldcut, Steinski, etc). Within less than two tracks of Polygon Window, I was blown away (and thought "quoth" was bonkers, though it later grew on me). I later rationalised it as "modern digital stuff (including beats) with lush analogue mellotronesque other stuff too", with a footnote that it was the sort of thing that TD should have been doing... My first Warp purchase, in 93, was tentative, based on a record shop's advice, and was (unsurprisingly) "incunabula" -- I may have seen recommendations on the net (were the idm or ambient lists around then?) -- accompanied by Namlook's "Air 2". I haven't looked back. -- R --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Great thread, Philip. I hope others follow like this. The first Warp track I bought was on a rough-hewn mixtape from DJ Michael Sanchez, Tulsa's (then) premier club DJ. He mixed LFO's "We Are Back" into everything from Ministry to Laiback to Front 242 to TKK and it sounded weird but great to my high school ears, 'cos industrial was all the rage in Tulsa in the late 80s. I bought the 12" from Mohawk Music (R.I.P.) but didn't come across Warp again until a couple years later, when I happened into another Tulsa store and found Polygon Window and the first two Universal Indicators on the wall. Bought all three. Fell in love with PW, noticed that it was number "four in a series," and immediately stopped buying Belgian new beat. I mean, how could I listen to Antler Subway material after Bytes? It's a love affair that carries on to this day... laz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I had just gotten into NIN out of high school in '96 (I always "get" these things a little late, but I'm not a trend-follower, I'm just behind...) ... the following summer I was looking through the local Cheapo Discs in Minnesota, wanting to get something new but not knowing what. I looked through the club section for the hell of it (in my mind back then, there was just "pop, alternative, and that techno crap"). I saw this scary guy leering at me from a CD, it said "Aphex Twin - Richard D James Album". Aphex twin sounded oddly familiar, and I thought "what the heck." I went on to get everything I could by him ... eventually I got around to getting Autechre. Didn't get them for a while. Like I said, I'm slow. Autechre are still not my favorite; I don't listen to music like a lot of you guys (I don't care for Seefeel, My Bloody Valentine, etc; I'm more of a They Might Be Giants kind of guy), but nevertheless, Warp caught me and showed me what I was made to listen to. Hey, if it weren't for Warp, in a roundabout way I'd never have found Proem! Seriously, though, I'd probably have stopped listening to music much at all, since none of the alternatives have ever spoken to me in quite the same, satisfying way. Hmm, if I'd never gotten the warp/idm bug, think of all the money I might have saved... Nah, I'd've spent it all on computer hardware. -Adam PS - The best new album I bought recently is "Mink Car" by They Might Be Giants. It's worth it for the track "Man It's So Loud In Here" alone! Especially if you've ever been to the gawdawful trendy clubs peppering New York City. Those of you with EMusic subscriptions can go hear it for free... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! When I was a mere high school student... I used to publish a small alterna-zine, and somehow managed to get a lot of promotional items. At this point in time, TVT (who were distributing Wax Trax, one of my favorite labels at that point in time) licensed a series from Warp called "Artificial Intelligence" ... little did I know that this was to be a defining period in electronic music. The first thing I heard that made any real impact on me was Polygon Window's "Quoth" ... appealing to the industrial fan in me with its relentless, klangity percussion and complete lack of melody. That "Surfing on Sine Waves" discs remains one of my favorite Warp releases. I also got at that time albums by Black Dog Productions (Bytes), B12, the AI compilations, FUSE (when I didn't even know who Plastikman was) and a group called Autechre, whose "Incunabula" I thought even then was just a few notches better than the rest of the lot. So I guess it was a combination of those two, Polygon Window and Autechre, that really made an impression on me. And of course, within the next year I heard Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works II" and I was hooked. :-)

Seventeen years old, living in Minnesota and listening to REV105, I visited a used CD store by the university. "In-store Ambients: Aphex Twin/The Black Dog" - a promo sampler, half tracks from ICBYD, half from Spanners. It was my first electronic CD, and it sat there in my collection like the monolith from 2001 - mysterious, impossible to ignore, eventually changing my record-buying completely. Well, I guess I'll wax nostalgic since everybody else seems to be: My brother took me to my first rave in 92 or 93 (I was like 12) and I loved it. I was already into electronic music a bit (Nine Inch Nails and the Prodigy, mostly) and got really heavily into it then. I picked up stuff like Moby and Zoo Rave 1 and it kind of went from there. Back then ravers listened to IDM in chill-out rooms and Aphex still made dancefloor material. Hmmmm. My first Warp release was Amber, although before I knew about B-12, I kept seeing Electro Soma in Chicago and other places. I remember I was in NYC and purchased Amber from the Mega store right there off Lafayette....I was heading to Other Music but it hadn't opened yet so I dashed across the street, all frantic and shit, to the Mega store and got it. Funny cuz I got my first Aphex disc that day too from Throb..... -----Original Message----- From: atomly [mailto:atomly@atomly.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 10, 2001 10:16 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: [idm] warp Well, I guess I'll wax nostalgic since everybody else seems to be: My brother took me to my first rave in 92 or 93 (I was like 12) and I loved it. Must've been Aphex Twin's "On EP" - quite possibly also the first CD I bought with the fixed intention of getting it after seeing the video on MTV - please blame me offlist for that... :)

My first ever electronic music album and Warp release that I bought was Aphex Twin's SAWII. It was late '95 in my 2nd year in college. I'm a very big hip hop fan and at that time, things just weren't the same in hip hop. I felt that there had to be something more. I had a friend who was also into hip hop and many other things (he's a big Joy Division, New Order, etc. fan). He had 2 Aphex twin releases: Analogue Bubblebath 1 and ...I care because you do. Those were my first taste into electronic music. I remember nights when I borrowed his CD just to have Alberto Balsalm on all night on repeat while I slept. I started researching electronic music on the web (another discovery of mine at the time) and read about different artists and styles of electronic music. So one day I'm at the local Best Buy (they used to have a decent selection and price too), and I saw SAWII on the racks. I thought, "I don't know what ambient music sounds like, and it's Aphex Twin." So going off of that, I bought it. I listened to that and was totally blown out of the frame! Definitely something to be listened to with headphones on and your eyes closed. My favorite of that still remains D1 Trk3 (Rhubarb). Very cold and longing. Since then, Warp has always been a staple in my music collection. My first experience with Warp was Tri Repetae(++). I bought it circa '96 when it came out. I was turned on to it by MTV of all sources (and American MTV at that). I saw the video for "Second Bad Vibel" late one night and was totally ripped apart by it. I didn't know what to think of it; it was a very bizarre moment for me because up to that point, the only electronic music I was familiar with was traditional electronic "dance" music. I bought the cd locally. I was surprised that I found it because I'm from a small town, and the more obscure artists usually never found their way to our shelves. I listened to the cd often, but I never really understood it until a year or two later. I think it takes a strong backbone in more of the A.I. type stuff before you begin to appreciate most of Autechre's more recent work. In the proceeding months I began to pay a lot of attention to ambient music. This found me gems like Amber and SAW2. From there I began to listen to a lot of AFX, Plaid, and the rest of the Warp roster, and then on to more obscure labels of the sort. And here I am. Anyways, Warp has put forth a legacy, and I believe this legacy has greatly influenced the way electronic music operates in the industry today. I have no doubt that remaining Warp heroes and heroines will continue this legacy full throttle. -char _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I was convinced that the true underground stuff was the music that I would hear DJ's spin at raves, and that any artist that actually put out an album on a CD must have been crap. Usually I don't fall for a "me too"-posting. I have to make an exception here since Warp Records has been such a big part of my electronic music collection (and career as a DJ). The first Warp Records release I bought was LFO's ``Frequencies'' on vinyl when it first came out about ten years ago. It has stayed in my all time favourite list from ever since. I was quite active in the Amiga scene at the time, and LFO's ``LFO'' was on some group's music disc. I just had to get the record. Previously, I had experienced acid house in Ibiza first hand in 1989, so I was already hooked on new beat and acid (to which I had progressed from Laserdance, YMO, Koto, Kraftwerk and Jarre). Getting more into the bleepy Sheffield sound was just a logical step forward. I was an avid follower of Warp up until WAP70 or so, after that the catalogue became a bit too heterogenous for my taste (isn't it weird, being a Finn myself, that I don't much care for Jimi Tenor?). I have almost instinctively collected each and every Autechre release there is, all on vinyl and most release on CD as well (the curse of the DJ: you'll love playing the vinyl but hate it at home since you'll have to flip sides - so you buy both formats). During the past years I've passed many releases (mainly because I've got too many labels I'm following like slave), though I still actively support Warp by ordering their releases from WarpMart. The graphic design of Warp sleeves has always been probably the best I've ever seen. TDR's style has always appealed to my tastes (being somewhat of a graphic design dilettante myself). All in all, Warp Records have always known how to create a package that really, really tickles my waddle. Case in point - Brothomstates' ``Claro''. What a stunning cover (I won't even start on the music, I still can't verbalise some of the tracks - Lassi's work is just awesome). One thing I'd like to see again are Warp Records record bags. The one that I have is starting to fall apart after some seven years of use. And yes, I have the slipmats (silver foil logo), the t-shirts (reflective logo on navy blue and charcoal gray, black puff logo on black and maroon long-sleeve), the promotional cards, stickers, and whatnot. I'm wearing the navy blue right now. So yes, you might say that Warp Records has been quite an influence (though for sure not the only one). I thank Warp for enriching my life for the past decade. The first warp cd that I bought was come to daddy by aphex twin. At that time, I was still heavily in the industrial scene. The aphex twin video come to daddy was so disturbing and interesting that I had to buy the album. I was looking for the hyper aggressive stuff. To my surprise, I discovered that the cd contained a lot of ambient music. That is when I discovered idm. At that time, it was organic techno or intelligent techno. The music of the songs seemed to evolve and to blossom just like organic plants. From there on, I purchased all aphex twin releases that I could get my hands on. I discovered autechre a while later and possess their whole discography now. Fave album, if there can be one out of all their excellent releases is chiastic slide. But still, I was into mouse on mars and stereolab, I discovered them while I was living in montreal in 98 since the 2 bands collaborated a lot together, and have been buying their releases ever since. Stereolab – dots & loops and mouse on mars – iaora Tahiti were the 1st cds of them that I got. When the whole industrial scene started to calm itself, I got into the ebm scene. This did not last very long, since most of the songs & bands are very similar. Distorted vocals, melodies, hard pounding rhythms. But it got me into the noise scene, ant-zen, hymen, hands, malignant, possessive blindfold and others. I then started djing noise, particularly rhythmic noise with an eye for the dancefloor. Stuff like ms gentur and winterkälte could easily be used on dancefloors. But our local scene is not that evolved and I did not have a lot of gigs. Late 90s I got heavily into the idm scene, purchasing all new warp releases, starting to buy vinyls and mounting an idm / minimal techno dj set. Right now, I think that the music that I enjoy the most is minimal techno. I enjoy its emptiness, its coldness, its density. 2 years ago, I started purchasing techno releases to practice my mixing on turntables. At the time, hard acid off the liberator djs and the stay-up forever collective was very strong in quebec, so I bought a lot of cluster. I would have never thought that I would love techno. As in minimal techno, the drum beats, its coldness are all enticing. Since then, I have started to include other labels in my techno sets, including drumcode, infected, cluster, stay-up forever, hydraulix, raw. The best album I can recommend is jetone – ultramarin. Its incredible, to anyone who hasn’t hear tim heckers work, I recommend it. This album was just released on force-inc, and I have it in vinyl and cd. Thousand oaks is my fave track. Im still looking forward to purchasing all the autechre & aphex twin on vinyls, since I like to include them in my sets. Best djs ive seen so far: Techno: Dave Clarke, d.a.v.e. the drummer Trance: tiësto, Darren emerson [tech trance sets] Best techno plates at the moment Untitled - d.a.v.e. the drummer – hydraulix9 Santa pod – crash n burn (geezer & aaron liberator) – suf48 r a n g e info@horripilations.org www.horripilations.org <http://www.horripilations.org/> booking & demo info: booking@horripilations.org promo info: promo@horripilations.org

the first warp artists i heard were off of a compilation called 'Wasted - The best of Volume' (i'm pretty sure. at work now, so i may have that title backwards). anyway, that had some cabaret voltaire, orbital, bjork, massive attack, etc. on there which i was really really into at the time, and it just so happened that there was an autechre and an aphex twin track on there. was sort of taken aback by it, and i let it go to the wayside with everything else. shortly thereafter, i was at a coffee shop with a couple of people and heard the RDJ album...in particular, i was very amused by 'milkman'. my friend jeff picked that release up a couple days later, and then i bought the 'come to daddy' EP. that was my first warp purchase, and like just about everyone else, i never looked back. :mz // anonbox · http://posthoc.org/ | http://ecesis.org/ 'if there were two of you, which one would win?' --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The first Warp I picked up was the Sweet Exorcist full length and it was the trippiest thing I had ever heard. I remember listening to that record along with LFO's "LFO", The Step's "Yeah You", Coil's "Windowpane", and Cabaret Voltaire's "What is Real?" and doing multiple tabs of windowpane back in 1990. It completely rewired my brain. Highest respect for Warp.
