I had just gotten into NIN out of high school in '96 (I always "get" these things a little late, but I'm not a trend-follower, I'm just behind...) ... the following summer I was looking through the local Cheapo Discs in Minnesota, wanting to get something new but not knowing what. I looked through the club section for the hell of it (in my mind back then, there was just "pop, alternative, and that techno crap"). I saw this scary guy leering at me from a CD, it said "Aphex Twin - Richard D James Album". Aphex twin sounded oddly familiar, and I thought "what the heck." I went on to get everything I could by him ... eventually I got around to getting Autechre. Didn't get them for a while. Like I said, I'm slow. Autechre are still not my favorite; I don't listen to music like a lot of you guys (I don't care for Seefeel, My Bloody Valentine, etc; I'm more of a They Might Be Giants kind of guy), but nevertheless, Warp caught me and showed me what I was made to listen to. Hey, if it weren't for Warp, in a roundabout way I'd never have found Proem! Seriously, though, I'd probably have stopped listening to music much at all, since none of the alternatives have ever spoken to me in quite the same, satisfying way. Hmm, if I'd never gotten the warp/idm bug, think of all the money I might have saved... Nah, I'd've spent it all on computer hardware. -Adam PS - The best new album I bought recently is "Mink Car" by They Might Be Giants. It's worth it for the track "Man It's So Loud In Here" alone! Especially if you've ever been to the gawdawful trendy clubs peppering New York City. Those of you with EMusic subscriptions can go hear it for free... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo!
