If you want the best quality ripper and encoder... thats easy. Exact Audio Copy (in secure mode) and LAME 3.93 vbr, using one of the alt preset commands. I prefer " --alt-preset extreme". You can get EAC here: http://www.exactaudiocopy.de (and its free). EAC is easily the best ripper out there (except possibly PlexTools, but thats limited), and will ensure a 100% error free perfect rip if used correctly. And LAME is by far the most developed encoder/decoder out there. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thad Biggerstaff" <daht73@yahoo.com> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, September 05, 2003 12:53 AM Subject: [idm] OT: mp3 encoder/ripper suggestions?

Well, the best program for ripping would probably be Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de) which was written with the best possible audio extraction quality in mind. Plus, it's postcardware - you can send the author a postcard if you like it. :)

Actually, I use EAC to rip WAV-files to my harddisc and then use CDex to encode them, as it's got a nice feature to encode a whole directory tree, which EAC sadly lacks. It also comes with a recent version of LAME pre-packaged, which would be what I'd recommend to encode your MP3 files with anyway. Hope this helps. np: Autechre - Bronchusevenmx24 (Garbage EP) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sent through MailGateway - http://www.ssw.uni-linz.ac.at:2000/ Send AND read your emails EVERYwhere. --------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

contrary to what you'd expect the latest version of lame isn't recommended for quality, lame's development has been fairly static of late and a lot of the newer releases have just been tinkerings.. tinkerings that haven't been tested and may make bigger files, or worser quality files than the proven older compiles.. stick with the version described below and you will be safer with your files.. --alt-preset standard or --alt-preset fast standard (if you are in a hurry, but it will make bigger files possibly lower quality tho in theory it shouldn't be) http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showforum=15& : full list of lame/mp3 related discussion http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?showtopic=478& : recommended version of lame for quality http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/show.php/showtopic/203 : recommended settings to use with lame
