well i don't really hear a mess of talk about the man ,Thomas Newman. the guy who should have won the best original score golden globe and oscar for his American Beauty masterwork, but he's been doing electronic style scores for years. the Desperately Seeking Susan score is a great example as well as Real Genius and Men Don't Leave. all great scores that incorporate loads of 80s ass electro. but he's so versed in so many different styles that the electro stuff is only the tail end of it. and then theres always the Faltermeyer (everybody say Beverly Hills Cop yall) cheers// Rod Lester your friends @ The Jega Discography http://www.geocities.com/bellexone/jega.html stepintime@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! there is an electronic project in Israel which is responsible for the soundtrack of The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari, they called TAA-PET and the whole idea of the project is an improvisation with another form of art (pictures, movies, etc) i haven't heard that soundtrack performance yet, but my friend has told me that it was VERY GOOD. you can find more info on TAA-PET here: http://come.to/party-in-israel just enter the LIVE ACTS section [LX] -----Исходное сообщение----- От: brian albers <brianalbers@hotmail.com> Кому: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Дата: 06 августа 2000 19:12 Тема: Re: [idm] soundtracks

I saw "dirty pretty things" over the weekend, and the soundtrack for that is pretty darn good in my opinion. You may want to watch the movie before you pick it up, but it's definitely quality stuff. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've always wanted to do an album where each song has samples from a particular movie. Just to mention something soundtrack and idm related in one shot... I'm quite fond of the Passengers release which is U2 with Brian Eno. Good stuff.. and each tune is compiled from various soundtracks they've collaborated on together. -matT --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Holy shit! Jim Thirwell scored a film? I guess that kind of makes sense. The Steroid Maximus material is pretty damn filmy. Anyway, as for soundtracks and all that... Ennio Morricone is sort of the king, but you might do well to get a compilation of some sort. You'll invariably discover that everyone samples him. Like that venetian snares - dance like you're selling nails track. Bernard Herrmann is another favorite of mine. I mean... all of his shit is awesome. The Hitchcock stuff is among the best. Also, the day the earth stood still is a theremin classic and aptly sampled on Timo Maas' track Help Me. Also, Danny Elfman. Also Peter Thomas. Get Rampatrouille because its awesome. And whoever mentioned Jerry Goldsmith on Logans Run, I second that. As well as Mr. Goldsmiths Flynt movie soundtracks. Thats all for the moment. ----- Original Message ----- From: antIDisestablishMentarianism <harvey_the_black_dog@yahoo.com> Date: Monday, August 18, 2003 8:39 pm Subject: Re: [idm] Re: soundtracks

Christopher Young for: Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, A Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, Species, Copycat, Urban Legend, Bless the Child, The Gift, The Glass House and most recently The Core. The big question is, was Ennio Morricone mentioned on behalf of Lolita (god, that was a beautiful film)... Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk fame) for Irreversible (what a love scene Monica Bellucci had on the concrete). Angelo Badalamenti for: Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, Lost Highway, Arlington Road, The Beach, Mulholland Dr. and Rabbits. Tomaso Albinoni for: Rollerball ('75) and Gallipoli. --- Aaron D Meyers <adm226@nyu.edu> wrote:

Dang, you all forgetting the funniest bestest movie ever ... Thrashin' with Red Hot Chill Peppers before they were anywhere, Devo, The Bangles, Circle Jerks, and and and ah, i wish i still owned this movie and could watch the opening sequence again. Had me stoked for life on skating. Also the 'Reach The Rock' soundtrack was pretty good with loads of good chicago post-rock, even if the movie was a bit weird/lame. The film was directed by John Hughes, like ten years or so after all his 80s movies, and the soundtrack was scored by his son John Hughes III, who runs Hefty records and who enlisted John McEntire for the job, ending up with this awesome collection of bands like Tortoise, Bundy K. Brown, The Sea & Cake, Polvo and Dianogah. -thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Just to be horrifyingly on-topic: On the subject of soundtracks, The Notwist just released a wonderful 12" on Alien Transistor records called "Lichter", which is the soundtrack of a film by that name by Hans-Christian Schmid. I haven't seen the movie (which I wouldn't understand unless it was translated into English anyway *g*) but the music is wonderful - piano and electronics from the Notwist plus cello and zarb. Includes a Console remix, and is fab fab. Real audio samples here, it turns out: http://www.alientransistor.de/AT/AT-N03-Notwist-Lichter.html Cheers, Peter -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.frogworth.com/blog/ FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au/ Raven: experimental electronica http://www.frogworth.com/raven/ "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" - Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

And one of the first to utilize the Theremin to great effect. Hitchcock's 'Spellbound' was the first soundtrack to feature the Theremin. 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' is a classic Theremin s.f. soundtrack. Morricone's 'Once Upon A Time In The West' is my fave of his stuff, so far. 'Man With A Harmonica' is the sh!t. The film is the sh!t, too: Henry Fonda is one ~bad~ muthafucka: there's no Golden Pond in that wild west. If one gets an opportunity to view that movie on a big screen, do it: the villainous Fonda, in a giant, close-up, screen-fillling headshot, is worth the price of the ticket: his character is a classic movie monster. http://tinyurl.com/kg24 And his character is completely out-of-character, for Henry Fonda. just a little morricone aside... its all well and good to listen to albums of him and stuff, but the man is legendary because of the way the music works with the films. If you haven't seen any of the Leone/Eastwood westerns, you just fucking have to. They are ridiculously good, but they would be nowhere without Morricone's music punctuating everything happening on screen. I mean... there is no dialogue for the first 10 minutes of Fistful of Dollars and how is it pulled off? Well its abosurdly overdrawn and melodramatic, but it works because of Morricone. He rules. Oh and John Zorn recorded an interesting album of Morricone covers about 20 years ago. It got reissued in the past couple years with beautifully designed new packaging and new tracks with newer members of the downtown new york scene. Also, Goblin(s?) rules, especially on the Suspiria soundtrack. ----- Original Message ----- From: philippe-petit <philippe-petit@wanadoo.fr> Date: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 6:51 am Subject: [idm] soundtracks

three of my favorite soundtrack composers are elliott goldenthal, howard shore and christopher young. shore writes very moody, dense underscore and has worked a lot with two of my favorite directors, david fincher (on PANIC ROOM and THE GAME) and david cronenberg (THE FLY, DEAD RINGERS, VIDEODROME, many others) most recently, he won an oscar for his lord of the rings soundtrack, but his other work is typically less bombastic and wonderfully cerebral, like an escher drawing you can analyze this way and that without a real resolution. young is probably best known to this group for replacing coil on clive barker's HELLRAISER -- and in my opinion he wrote a much better score than coil's. extremely dark and fiery, even ambient in places. his OST for george romero's THE DARK HALF is superb -- very melancholy and lyrical but very dark as well. goldenthal is perhaps my favorite -- his stuff is very modern and aggressive but an incredibly dense listen, maybe the most compositionally advanced of the lot. he definitely has a contemporary and ambient sensibility -- check out HEAT, ALIEN 3, DEMOLITION MAN, TITUS for some great examples. these are three of the best in my opinion, in addition to past masters like herrmann and morricone who have already been mentioned. cheers, ashok --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Seconded! particularly Shore's score for Cronenberg's The Naked Lunch featuring Ornette Coleman - lovely, eery, spooked stuff. Orbital has announced their soundtrack is complete for Octane, a british horror film with a big cast. They previously have done soundtracks for Event Horizon (along with Michael Kamen), but this is their first completely solo venture. Below is the announcement from www.loopz.co.uk (under news) ----------------------------------- Orbital have completed the score for a new film called Octane. Marcus Adams who wrote and directed the thriller "Long Time Dead" directs the British film. The film was completed in November 2002, the score was finished in February 2003 and the film should be out on November 14th 2003. Luxembourg, June 3rd 2002 saw the start of the 9-week shoot of OCTANE, the first film from Random Harvest's genre film production label Four Horsemen Films. A new style of horror, OCTANE is a stylish, high-energy feature drawing on America?s double obsession with religious cults and the open road. OCTANE'S all-star cast is led by Madeleine Stowe (We Were Soldiers, 12 Monkeys, The Last of The Mohicans) alongside Norman Reedus (Blade 2, 8mm), Bijou Phillips (Bully, Almost Famous), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Bend it Like Beckham, Velvet Goldmine) and Mischa Barton (The Sixth Sense, Lawn Dogs). OCTANE is directed by Marcus Adams (Long Time Dead), written by Stephen Volk and produced by Alistair MacLean-Clark and Basil Stephens. When Senga (Madeleine Stowe) and teenage daughter, Nat (Mischa Barton), travel home on a nighttime freeway, they start to see the weirdest things a couple picnicking by the side of a crashed car, a baby crawling up the middle of the road and a lone Recovery Man (Norman Reedus) who trawls the night for new car wrecks. Then, at a roadside coffee stop, a mysterious Backpacker (Bijou Phillips) lures Nat away with the offer of a compelling alternative existence with a young, blood-obsessed cult. Forced into a nightmarish chase, Senga becomes a woman plunged into a dark, deranged world, where she must confront her past in order to save her daughter. Testing times for mother and daughter but can Senga save Nat in time? Paul Hartnoll described the music as "Dark and minimal" and "Not too experimental weird...a bit more conventional". He explained that they have been using "the moody expander" type sounds that were familiar in "Dwr Budr" to give it its dark feel. Phil Hartnoll said, "Music still excites us. That's the best thing - having something that drives you. Get that thing that does it for you. Film is a different discipline for us, a different approach. You've got a job to do, and it's a new challenge." Orbital have also remixed a track from the Octane album called 'Initiation' which will be serviced to clubs at the end of August. You can hear the track on the LOOPZ website on the 27th August 2003. Orbital's first solo film score will be released on the 20th October 2003 through EMI. The total estimated playing time should be around 43 Minutes! _________________________________________________________________ <b>Get MSN 8</b> and enjoy automatic e-mail virus protection. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
