Hello, all.
Now get ready for this. Hopefully my email can settle all of this. But
more likely, everyone's going to tell me to go f**k myself. I've been
on this list in one form or another for about 4 years now, so I
DEFINITELY know the meaning of IDM within the context of this list.
Here's the dope:
IDM (Intelligent Dance Music) was a term that gained usage after it was
defined on the first Artificial Intelligence sampler (WaxTrax!). The
music is not necessarily for dancing, but it should be fairly groovy
(unlike straight ambient). Imagine kind of standing in one place and
bouncing around to a song without having to move your feet. The song
you're listening to at that time would be classified as IDM. I know
there's a lot of crossover, so the term has to be used loosely.
Bands like U2 (I still like them), don't qualify as IDM, as this is not
typically their type of music, and the extent of their entry into this
"genre" depends on who's producing their latest album. For instance,
Saint Etienne are not IDM, but many of the bands who remix them make IDM
music. Therefore, you're welcome to talk about those remixes, but
please go elsewhere in search of bands who play the type of music which
Saint Etienne create themselves.
Neither U2, or their producers and their remixers qualify as IDM. You
may want to discuss this stuff on alt.music.techno (I believe) or some
alternative mailing list. If you go there, you won't be flamed or sworn
at, you'll find people with similar interests, and none of us will need
to read hundreds of emails about something which is pretty cut and dry
to begin with.
So without further adieu, let the mud fly. I can take it.
