Have you actually heard any recent stuff by Alec Empire or any Atari Teenage Riot? I've seen Atari Teenage Riot play in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago, they plated at a festival which headlined The Prodigy, a lot of "gabbers" were there for The Prodigy and ATR was too loud for them, imagine that ... It's not just loud, really aggressive and all, I like it. Not something you can listen to all day though ... Compared to ATR or Alec Empire, Autechre is elevator music, really good elevator music though :) Later, Sasja // Sasja "CHrOmE" Barentsen chrome@xs4all.nl -o- http://www.xs4all.nl/~chrome/

I remember seeing this lot and they were awful. Really weak sounding drum machines with unimaginitive synths on top and really stupid lyrics. This was a couple of years ago now and it`s possible that Alec Empire has since hooked up with them and sorted them out. Tim On Thu, 3 Oct 1996, A.M. Barentsen wrote:

I have actually, but for Mike D to say that THIS style of electronic music is somehow better or above the rest becuase it reminds him of punk or riot grrrrl music (all of which is currently pretty awful IMHO) is ridiculous, and probably the worst reason I've ever heard for someone's appreciation of techno/dance/idm/etc. The Beasties have been saying for years in interviews how much they hate ravers and techno music and it's quite retarded of them to all of a sudden jump on the bandwagon when they've been dissing it for years in the press. _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA

If I recall correctly, he didn't say it was *better* because it reminded him of punk, just that it *did* remind him of punk. As a style of music, punk has certain redeeming qualities, notably the ability to convey raw testosterone-fuled anger and rebellion. All Mike D. is saying is that this style of electronic music shares that quality with punk. And while I'm not in a position to comment on whether he's right or not, I would say that the 'anger' present in Autechre is quite different from the anger present in most punk. The Beasties have been saying for

...I wouldn't exactly call this style of electronic music 'the bandwagon.' -Arjun

Bullshite, digital hardore has been around sometime. Take a listen to _the Swamp Terrorists_ album _Grim Stroke Disease_... Horror movie dialog mixed with Milli Vanilli samples and ampheta-breakbeats... All this from 1990. Also, try and catch South African acts Battery-9 & Live Jimi Presley (not strictly electronic - they use angle-grinders & fire extinguishers on stage - what a blast). What about Test Department & the Cassandra Complex?????

Sasja/[chrome],come on! Autechre is of course *intelligent* Elevator Music. (aka <iem>) . . . hehehe Oh, yeah . . . Trivial Afterthought Time: many of you will be too young to remember this, but The Elevator was one of the "16 Dances" immortalised by the B52s circa 1979, along with other Old Faves such as The Shy Tuna, The Hippy Shake, The Hipp-o-Crit, and the Camel Walk . . . I regret to say I have no reliable information on which of these is *Intelligent* . . . :) alan/beyondthebristolsound

Mike D didn't say this stuff was "somehow better or above all the rest" because of this similarity, he said that the similarity was why he was attracted to it, which seems perfectly understandable to me. I'm sure he'd be horribly disappointed to hear that his personal reasons for liking this music aren't a good enough reason for you -- after all, it *is* everyone else's responsiblity to run the reasoning behind their musical tastes past you for your approval.

Yeah! This whole thing is as hypocritical as saying you like hard bop after you've told the world for years that you hate Kenny G! How dare they actually discover a form of music that they enjoy and then work to actively promote it -- I mean, the *nerve* of those B-boy wannabe assholes! -- ::: Lazlo (lazlo@swcp.com; http://www.swcp.com/lazlo)

Actually, its just a bit stupid since the beasties like to think of themselves as the final authority on all things cool who are totally above reproach or even worse lapse in taste. Now all of a sudden they, with a godlike touch, decree that it is now possible to be cool AND ike electronic dance music, which is absolutely contrary to everything they've been saying since rave broke big in the early ninties here in LA(where they live). More suspicious still is the timing of this decision given the current increased media attention and rise in popularity of this form of music here in the US. And next time, try not to be so hostile. _____ / ,-,_) /,_) (/ RESH Live & Direct from the G-Spot, Orange County, California, USA

I'm having trouble imagining what exactly could make this stuff any harder than what's already being played by ultra-hardcore DJs I've heard like Ron D. Core or EFX or Tron. Hardcore (squared) = what? Industrial? Japanese noise? Speedcore? John Zorn-style free jazz? If this is truly a "new" form of hardcore, please explain in what way it would be new, since I'm always interested in stocking a least one copy of the most extreme form of music I can find, if only for the pleasure of winning stereo wars with my neighbors. As for sounding like punk, that makes it sound kinda pansy-ass to me. I could list a ton of stuff that makes punk rock sound like elevator music.
