I really like vocals in techno song where you can just barely make out the words. I don't mean vocal pads, but more where it's just someone talking (or singing) and you think you should be able to tell what they are saying, but it is just screwed up enough that you can't. Underworld are the masters of this "and a beggars dog tasting the wind". Eno is quite good too "he phrases the stroke that takes the oil", a la Nerve Net. the orb have some good ones (mostly foriegn language stuff) and the vocals to Perpetual Dawn "you'll dance and prance in any dance". the cocteau twins, of course (not really idm), I mean FSOL (phew!). Oh, and Orbital halcyon + on + on is quite good. Fortran 5 Bike and XX21 "ba ba ba, ba ba ba". In short (too late!) there are a lot of groups who do this sort of thing. I'm wondering if anybody know of any songs which are entirely vocal or significantly vocal (but obscured or weird vocals). It's always been my dream to start an a cappella techno group. We'd bring beat boxing back in style "A pumpbh, a pumbh, a <hiccup> puumbh!" [fletcher]

I've been thinking that I'd like to do a similar thing, that is, sample a bunch of strange vocal sounds/words and then mutate them to the point that they are unrecognizable so that they can be used as percussive effects. The only examples I can think of that come close to this are Kraftwerk's "Boing Boom Tschak", those laughing and wheezing samples on the Ventolin EP, and that karate stuff on _Salsa with Mesquite_. The Art of Noise has some good stuff too and Ultramarine use vocal 'percussion' on some tracks off United Kingdom. I wonder if you could get a song going using just minimal effects. Have spoken word parts by people with really different voices and just layer and loop them (or get text parts which are naturally loopy, like poetry with repeated phrases). I wish I had some sampling equipment. [fletcher]

Well, it's been done before. One of the members of Kraftwerk used it in his solo work. Plus I've heard it on the number of non-techno records. Sounds pretty interesting, especially if you route the velocity to the sample start! Listen to early ultramarin records. Although they were a little too much into natural instruments :) Mike -- --------------------------------------------------------- -------- Dammit, where's that Byx Jeeb character? ------ --------------------------------------------------------- - MIKE . 708 435 0010 (W VOX) - 708 BYX JEEB (H VOX) - - DVORKIN . 708 435 0013 (W FAX) - dvorkinm@pcs.mot.com - ---------------------------------------------------------

For `weird' acapella stuff, theres an LP by Sheila Chandra (on Virgin Records) - but I can't remember it's name :( Sorry! Anyway, from what I've heard, it's pretty good. Sorry...Jools Holland used to be in Squeeze, a British pop band, then got a job in telly. He now presents a live music show where all sorts of artists come and play, from Portishead (a while ago) to Garth Brooks (last week), with lots of ageing(sp?) blues singers thrown in for fun. Not my cup of tea all the time, but he's a nice bloke Rob.

`Later... with Jools Holland' is one of *the* best music shows on British TV (IMO). Basically, a number of bands get together in a largish TV studio and do their live stuff... The music is varied (this week there was Aimee Mann, Blur, Soul II Soul, some Algerian trio - and probably some other people) so whilst you might tune in to hear a particular artist, you also get exposed to other musics which may be completely new to you. Ok, for those of you heavily into techno etc. then it's probably not for you. If, however, you're into broadening your musical horizons, then it's pretty good... Jools Holland is (for those who didn't know) a *shit hot* pianist, especially boogie-woogie/R&B styles. He used to be the keyboard player for `Squeeze'. He's currently on a UK tour (I think) and he's playing York Barbican Centre on Dec. 8th. I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Todd Rundgren's "A Capella" record, on which _every_ instrumental sound is a sampled vocal bit (so you get lots of AON-style "dum de dum dum dum" basslines and such.) Interesting as a proof of concept, a bit less so as a record (though the cut "Blue Orpheus" is awesome). -- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@conch.aa.msen.com born freeke <A HREF="http://www.msen.com/~marmoset/">Dave Walker</A>
