Just a short recap of what I've seen this year at Mutek ... Unfortunatly, I didn't go to any of the day shows ... The ugly : Pole : horrible excursion into rap/hip-hop ... music was awfull ... Philipp Quehenberger : bad amateur industrial music, lousy singer. Cristof Migone and Reconaissance (Oren Ambarchi and Martin Ng) : introspection into nothing, worthless. Algorithm : like a bad CD, and you can't ffwd between tracks. The good : Myléna Bergeron : for her naivety. Tim Hecker : ambient that I liked. T.Raumschmiere : for his energy, his presence. Magda : nice minimal tech-house DJ set, Coil (first time for me) ambient, with and wihout beats. Matthew Dear : cool tech-house, Lucianno : same as Matthew dear, but with more stage presence. Deadbeat : deep dubby rythm. Mambotur : latino tech-house, that didn't buried itself into too much latino beats... The very good : Robin Judge : groovy minimal tech-house, nice openner for the final Cobblestone Jazz : tech-house, with some jazz fusion twist. Clinker : pulsative ambient. Telefon Tel-aviv : wow, ambient breakbeat, some drill'n'bass, great melodies. The good: T.Raumschmiere -- he brought the dead back to life after the terrible set by P.Quehenberger. Punk rock meets hardcore meets sexy tech-house with wicked basslines and unbelievable stage presence. Kinda like a non-repulisve GG Allin with trucker hat, wifebeater and full beard. The bad: The "turntablist" Experience 1 feat. Philip Jeck, Mirina Rosenfeld, Martin Ng, et al. "scratching" noise. Fucking jerk-off bullshit that proves, finally, that lots of weird turntables does not make good music, unless you happen to be an editor for the Wire. The ugly: The fucking turtleneckin' IDM fanboy who told me was I talking too loud during the above-mentioned "bad" set and that it had been the worst 3 minutes of his mutek experience. Hey shithead: go fuck yourself. If you want to enjoy bad non-music without hearing conversations, DONT GO TO A FUCKING CLUB TO HEAR IT. Stay at home with your records in their plastic bags and listen to your "art" on the fucking headphones, asshole. The very good: Kontakt der Junglinge. Wow, wow, wow. I've heard this comment from many people lately (both at Movement/DEMF and Mutek), and have to wonder about it. Are those who are saying Pole's new music with Fat John is bad saying this because they dislike hip-hop in general, or because they think the new material is bad hip-hop? In other words, would you dislike any material that Pole produced with an MC, or do you have an interest or background in the music that helps you view the new Pole material in a critical context, comparing it to other hip-hop? This is not a flame, just an honest question to help me understand the opinions of others. The rapper himself is ok, but the music sucks! no vibe, no soul ... I sometimes like rap (hip hop) but not what Pole is trying to do with it. Pole music was and still is into the minimal dub style, he decided to add some hip-hop flavor to it, and for me, it didn't work, it didn't have the same feel as (for example) tricky, Spectre (Second Coming), or some of the tracks on the "Destruction of Syntax" compilation on SubHarmonic. When I find that I like a rap/hiphop song, it always is in the darker side of the spectrum, with a lot of ambience, and deepness to the beats, bass and the voice needs to do more than just rap.

I haven't heard Fat John/Pole work; but each MC has a unique relationship to the beat. Some guys ride it, some guys don't. Some of my MC friends who are generally regarded as tight always sound rushed and behind the beat to me, but eveybody besides me seems to think they're tight. I recently got to see the Last Poets, and they perform with a conga player, but never try and ride the beat at all, yet somehow it all works out. Eminem's flow I've always found to be incredible; he has a unique approach to the beat, riding it and cutting loose from it but always sounding tight. must correct smthng what i heard was more along the line of 45/45, not really a breakbeat or hiphop, but with a touch of it i like wht is called sometimes dub poetry, sort of capleton style, toasting to slow dub i guess that would have been an ideal invironment for Pole's hip/hop experiments __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The stripped down prog jazz/rock Sixtoo set was killer. P-Love is the master of the stylophone (which is even more impressive given that it arrived in the mail that morning). Seeing Coil was legendary and bordered on religious. Senor Coconut was genius. There were so many levels of humor going on there it's hard to know where to start...a tight pant chilean dude singing "you're all showroom dummies, cha cha cha" is a starting point. Cobblestone Jazz should be burned at the stake. It's 2003...improvised piano noodles over generic house with a vocoder really shouldn't be at a festival of experimental music (or really anywhere for that matter...). Jeff

I disagree. I thought they were way engaged with their music, and although I tend to have an automatic visceral reaction to house, I thought their stuff was really good. In fact, a lot of the experimental stuff I saw was complete crap. At least they weren't using laptops. With few exceptions, I think the laptop aesthetic had to be the single most boring and preditable element at Mutek. I've seen some people absolutely rock it with a lap-top and I've seen some people fail miserably with a large band. Artists just need to think about how their presenting their material and look for the appropriate space to present in. If you're boring to watch then put together some good visuals to compliment the experience, or pay attention to enviroment and present it in a non-club space. One of my favorite experimental performers is Franciso Lopez. Each time I've seen him the audience has been blind-folded and made to sit down. Makes for an amazing listening experience. I'm sure he's boring as hell to watch. I can't deal with people who put no effort into performance. Jeff

One thing to remember regarding this performance: it's definitely atypical for TTA. They usually perform with 2 laptops, 2 guitars, bass guitar (with James Hughes on bass duty), Rhodes piano, keyboard, and sometimes a vocalist. The laptop+knob boxes set they did at Mutek isn't how they usually rock it. HOWEVER. I still thought they were fantastic. Charlie from TTA told me before the show that I'd be bored (because they weren't playing much new material, maybe), but on the contrary, their performance was definitely one of the highlights of the festival for me, for a couple reasons. One, they simply played phenomenal tracks. No matter how they were producing it, the actual music coming out of the speakers was excellent. It included a bunch of material I'd never heard (and I have all the releases plus have played with them on the same stage a number of times), and tracks I was familiar with got a new treatment. The symphonic track they played (evidently the only one that's going to be on the new album) was just next-level; super good string parts that alternately soared and were squashed down into millisecond granular bits, then expanded back again to their original majesty. They obviously had a good time on stage, and whether or not you think laptop jocks should get down with their MIDI controllers "Hendrix style", it was fun to watch. As you can probably tell, I'm friends with those guys, and I say that not to impress anyone that I'm "down", just to give full disclosure. Having said that, though, I still rank 'em among the best of the new IDM artists. Their sound is ultra-wide in terms of stereo field, and ultra-deep in terms of frequency range. If I go to a movie and some knucklehead sitting next to me carries on a conversation with a friend the entire time, I'm gonna ask him to shut up. Is he there to see the movie or talk with friends?I'd be there to see the movie. Of course I wouldn't expect people at a music show to treat it like a museum or a classical concert, but if it gets to be intrusive the yes, quite frankly, take the conversation outside because I'm there to enjoy the music, not listen to you yap.

Wasn't it also a part of a so-called "Music Festival" too? I was under the impression people go to those to check out music regardless of what kind of venue it is. Please don't tell me that you went to Mutek for the typical social dynamic of a club. OK, well just to qualify things a bit more, like I said I was hardly the only one talking. There were many, many conversations going on. The atmosphere at Studio, where the incident occured, was quite different than the one at Excentris, where the 3 shows I saw there had very little talking inside the venue (including myself). Plus it was on the balcony, and had little fanboy really been that concerned about hearing every little detail sans peripheral conversations, he could have gone downstairs and laid on the floor like everyone else.

One of the best laptop performances I've ever seen was FRANCISCO Lopez's (no relation to J.Lo)performance in PA about 3 years ago. He siomply played for about 20 min. Had no visuals, didn't do anything. In fact he turned out the house lights. So, everyone just listened in the dark.
