ok, in the spirit of the request to post more news etc., has anyone else heard the super-secret new Skam related record by Mortal + Chemist ? Dont know whether this is a pseudonym or whether they're established artists, but in terms of presentation the record is similar to "Shapes" - clear plastic sleeve, heavy heavy vinyl and no label info. its definitely Skam though, from a very reliable source. The music is slightly reminiscent of Team Doyobi, cut up hip-hop but very sparse and gritty sounding...much like the 30mil releases, and with an amusing eminem destruction at the end. i didnt like it, but my hip-hop loving friend did. Also heard a promo cassette of the Team Doyobi album on Skam...much much better than everything else i've heard, which i really didnt like...its a lot more melodic, a bit like the black dog circa Spanners. The new Tube Jerk/Tim Wright single on Novamute is as close to Two-Step garage as Techno can get and is absolutely excellent. And its not IDM, but the Regis/Surgeon split-single is brilliant too. ________________________________________________________ "I believe in the modern world. I thought it sounded like a tribute to the minimal, jittery rhythms that are dominating R&B (courtesy Tim, natch). It comes across more like a one-off or piss-take than anything else (much like the latter day MASK/Shapes stuff- do you think that musicians purposefully withhold their best, most representative material for non-releases like this?). This isn't a criticism of the record, although it will probably be misquoted as such. I'm kind of glad this kind of thing exists, both as a spanner thrown into the record geek works and as a way for flotsam to emerge. Either way, its value derives from an expression of the energy spent unpuzzling the enigma of auteurdom than anything else. To wit, if you're driven by the need to hold the latest, mysterious, possibly Skam-related item in your hands to make you feel all special, here's your ticket for the spring/summer 2001 season. -rob By the way, this item is available to actual flesh & blood humans across the world through Forced Exposure. something just occurred to me...I wouldn't be even remotely surprised if most of skam's inspiration to include the "eminem destruction" came from knowing that it would probably cause future confusion between this release, and the "underground" record which eminem did with skam (not the label). hehe. clever. em. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
