Jordana (formerly 1.8.7.) used to have a good collection of them somewhere online... She moved to jordana.co.uk but now that doesn't seem to be working... I'd look for those, though. There are a bunch of websites like www.phatdrumloops.com which have some decent stuff, but they're somewhat lacking. Ok, this is just stupid. I don't give a fuck how many jungle ruffnecks have used a break. My assessment of breaks is based solely on how I can use it, and how versatile it is. The tone of the drums, and the overall feel mean more than "oooh! look how IDM I am, I sampled a break from some an Elvis track". blah blah blah. It's the same thing with 808/909 sounds. Yes, everyone and their mom uses 909 samples, but why and how? 99% of the stuff I hear with 808/909 samples uses them in a really boring way, but there's that special 1% that really makes me turn my head. That, to me, is much more artistic and impressive: to take a sound that many people know and do something totally new and fresh with it. -andrew

i agree. moreover i have to wonder: is this an indictment of guys like plug, animals on wheels, squarepusher, vat? they've all used the amen, and to awesome effect imo. none of them let the historical "baggage" of amen, paris, whatever get in the way of making good tunes. if anything they used the break to turn some of the more conservative facets of dnb on it's ears. much of the plug series is like a hilarious inside joke to me, but the real punchline is that the tunes are top. the early Rephlex movement used to call for the end of the 909 and 808. how do i reconcile that with d'arcangelo (sp), like a tim, and other Rephlex artists who have since used these instruments? could it be that their original assessment of the situation was made in the heat of the moment (during the deluge of early 90's 'ardcore and pop-techno), and that maybe they rethought their politic? maybe a drum machine wasn't the enemy. . .maybe it's usage was. convictions made convicts. if you don't like the sound of it, fine. maybe it sounds like ass to you. but if you allow the fact that the sound has been "overused" (a loaded and subjective word no doubt) to keep you from using it then you're doing yourself a real disservice in the songwriting department imo. a whole lot of crap has been made on just about every instrument imaginable. besides, in these post-post-post-post-modern times isn't a little stylistic nod fun now and again? i missed the amen discussion, but i've felt it's resonances ever since i subbed. sad to hear that autechre-styled prog rock is in style but the amen is not. i can't make heads or tails of that thinking, personally. disclaimer: i am an old raver. a "jungle ruffneck" if you will. the sound of a properly mashed amen is like, well, music to my ears. thusly jeff explains himself right out of the discussion :) -jeff ------------ 1642 try 621 ------------ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well, I wouldn't say "the less used the better." Admittdely, the uncut amen has been overused, but this doesn't mean that if I take a break from a Raffi record it's going to necessarily be better. Theere is a reason that these breaks have been used so much- they're perfect for it. The amen can be cut any way you want and it still pieces back together beautifully and sounds "ruff" the whole time. I do, however, like to find new breaks because it is possible to change your sound by doing this. well... maybe the 909 doesn't sound played out YET (to most of us anyway) but think about what older drum machines like the Linn sound like (Prince albums anyone?). I'm sure that somebody could take a Linn and make it sound fresh if they had to, but why? It's all in what you do with the sounds of course, and if you want to make jump-up jungle then Amen is the easy way to succeed at that because when people hear Amen, they say "hey this is a jungle track, i know this because i recognize that drumkit" just like they recognize certain kinds of house by the 909 kik-hat-kik-hat pattern. It's much more of an accomplishment if you can make a song that conforms to the rules of jungle or whatever genre you please out of elements that aren't the standard tools of that genre. It's by no means a hard and fast rule, but to me, re-using the same breaks/drum machines/synth presets that a million other bedroom boffins have already succeeded with doesn't forge any new ground. Granted that's not every artist's goal, and it shouldn't be. FWIW, I've heard plenty of people using breaks off Deodato records, including on chart topping singles here in New Zealand, so I'd dispute that his stuff fits the category of breaks "nobody else would touch". In fact, Deodato gets widely sampled full stop among "nu jazz" folks (ie. recent acid jazz re-branded, like most of the stuff on Compost). As for caring whether a break is played out.. I empathise, and normally shy away from stuff I've heard done to death, but also find that at some point I have to stop caring about that kind of thing. I reckon ultimately it's second-guessing my intended audience's reaction, and I can't claim to know what people will actually think. The number of fans of eg. Squarepusher's 'Hard Normal Daddy' suggests that a lot of people don't care how thrashed a beat is, providing you mess with it. Mr Self-conscious Post-Modern Guy (normally referred to as Luke Vibert ;-) did a great thing with 'Filthy Drummer', a Wagon Christ tune where he subtly mucks with the funky drummer break, bringing in fills and nuances, and then suddenly swings the whole damn beat. I love that, precisely because it's a beat everyone knows, it sounds like it's running straight in the way you expect, and then WHAM it makes my head fall off. He caps it off with some mock-JB vocal snippets going "ain't it filthy", where the original track has him saying "ain't it funky". I was sufficiently excited first time I heard it that I laughed out loud. Michael np.
