I think perhaps the problem with the name IDM for the genre is misleading especially when I can listen to something completely opposite in style and still appreciate it just as much "in my head"... for example grindcore... fast technical metal isnt something that most people call intelligent, but there are many bands that I think rip that I can "braindance" just as well as to some clicks or pops. Point being, idm could be more of an all-encompassing genre, rather than a nebulous and ambiguous definition of a style. IDM should be split in at least 100 categories but I dont think anyone would wanna take the time to subcategorize it -- it moves too damn fast anyway. (I like that tho.) IDM is a mailing list, not a musical genre. If I keep repeating it, maybe people will stop stressing on it as a tag. The whole idea of this list I hope is to discuss music that is primarily (though not exclusively) electronic, that bears repeated listening because it's actually art -- an idiosyncratic expression of the artist. That for me encompasses Steve Reich, Black Dog, Mad Professor, Amon Tobin, Jeff Mills, My Bloody Valentine, Edgar Varese, Thomas Brinkmann, and on and on til the break of dawn. While that means that precious little music will be off-topic, maybe the discussion about music and art can stay on topic if everyone unclamps their sphinctres a few clicks. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

heh, when you split things into 100 different categories, it no longer is a thing; it's simply a collection of those individual parts. if we all thought of spleens and livers and pancreases as different autonomous parts then we'd be all like something else. besides, splitting things into subcategories is where you end up with things like "grindcore" anyways (heh) point being that "idm"s problem with categorization is that everyone who worries about it is trying to peg a definition on idm. and that's basically the antithesis of idm. idm is sort of the 'everything else' category. it's not trip hop, it's not electronica, it's not even braindance. but it's all those things. it's sort of the "everything else that has electronics" category. -derek

Hey Kent, why dont you unclamp your sphincter a couple clicks, whatever the hell thats supposed to mean. Everyone corresponding to the aforementioned topic was not only discussing IDM as a genre of sorts, (which to me it IS, so it is), but trying to expound on that. I'm glad you have some artists that you like, we all do too, so lets talk about them and not try to be overly pretentious. I think Kent's point was meant to be anti-pretentious. The post he was replying to claimed a certain artist wasn't IDM (I'm afraid I don't have the original in front of me at the moment). Most people would assume that means we can't talk about that artist. Kent's saying let's not use the term IDM to just cover music with Autechresque beats. Why not discuss avant-garde classical music, dub, and hip hop? Don't say things like "Reich's not quite IDM." You'll be discouraging people from talking about him. I don't know about the whole sphincter business though :-)
