I think Kent's point was meant to be anti-pretentious.
The post he was replying to claimed a certain artist
wasn't IDM (I'm afraid I don't have the original in
front of me at the moment). Most people would assume
that means we can't talk about that artist. Kent's
saying let's not use the term IDM to just cover music
with Autechresque beats. Why not discuss avant-garde
classical music, dub, and hip hop? Don't say things
like "Reich's not quite IDM." You'll be discouraging
people from talking about him.
I don't know about the whole sphincter business though
