A friend of mine recently moved across the country and used renter's insurance to cover his sizable vinyl/cd collection during the move. I'm sure that renter's insurance would cover your collection in the case of a fire. -paul peterson

if you have regular homeowners insurance, the COST of the cds, vinyl, etc will be covered BUT NOT the VALUE (i.e. your rare stuff)...for that you need to get a rider to your policy which will require some work...but well worth it if collecting is your bag... tom w np: francois k - essential mix ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! most policies don't have exclusions for records and CD's, so it's easy to get insured. They just fall under normal contents of dwelling. Trick is to have an exact list w/replacement cost of everything you own so that if they all burn to the ground you have prove that their line of credit at HMV isn't going to get your collection back (ie. I send an updated filemaker program to insurance company every 6 months) for reference, my collection is insured for $50 000 which cost about $400 a year. Small price for the peace it gives me. Jeff

Same thing happened to Tsuyochi Suzuki (Matsuri) when he came to play here two months ago.. "Lost"? "Stole"? What's going on? Their music collection is these people's livelihood. Talking to the manager of my local CD chain, their biggest business is made up from tourists and people's insurance claims. I constantly stress over theft - seeing I have 2/3's of my CD's sitting pretty in flight cases. Just last night a DJ friend told me of some CD's being stolen from a birthday party gig he played over the weekend. This is the reason I prefer making up my own CD-R compilations to take to gigs, rather than risk the originals, but then some domestic machines don't 'read' my discs ... so you can't f*ing win, can you. Insurance in this country is prohibitively expensive, especially regarding items of high value like hi-fi & electronic equipment, which seem to be hot favourites in break-ins. Sad topic.
