So Ae finally performed in LA last nite.My biggest complaint was the near 5hour wait. The first DJ was pretty good, played good tracks. The next guy Chris Rose? What the fuck man, what a waste of time, another DJ and then finally 12:15am Ae get on. The first two songs were the best. Then it just died from there. I just kept thinking "Man this shit sounds similar to what Richie Divine in LA at o2 what...3years ago???" I enjoyed the set, but after 1hour I had to leave, it just was too repetitive. I got the feeling the crowd "forced" themselves to stay and "enjoy" it, though most were seated and staring into space, didn't look like they really cared for the music. I dunno what to say, I knew what to expect given all the reviews from previous shows, so I can't say i was disappointed. My wife ended up liking it, she only bitched about the 4+hourt wait. So maybe this means I'll drag her to more shows. However, San Diego has got to get something going. This whole event turned out to be a 10hour ordeal for us; with ride up and back and waiting for Ae to get on. ok, I'm rambling....blah, it was nice to see them in flesh I guess. Brian Rachielles (sp?) commented "Richie Divine beat them to the punch" I'm hoping R. Divine returns soon gilly ps: someone gave me a copy of Post Human (which I guess is the next SKAM) it's pretty good, not jaw dropping, like the early skams, but it's dark, melodic and crazy like those early ones...

<So Ae finally performed in LA last nite.My biggest complaint was the near 5hour wait.> I didn't care about the wait because I ran into so many people I haven't seen in ages. I even ran into tons of old mates from Tucson there. It was great seeing everyone out and talking. I didn't pay much attention to the first couple of djs. Russell Haswell's set was pretty awesome! The gridcore/death metal stuff with idm and minimal techno stuff brought a big smile to my face. If I'm not mistaken he played Cylob's - Industrial Folk Songs, hearing that at such a loud volume was cool!! Curtis Roads was pretty blah imho, but it was a fine soundtrack to have going on in the background while you talk to people. I thought Autechre set was AWESOME!!! I thought it was a lot better than Richard Devine's set 3 years ago, which was very cool also. It was pretty challenging music, and really took me back to when I use to listen to more experimental music. Ogre and Cevin Key were standing in front of me, and they looked like they were loving it. I've been pretty disappointed with some of the other idm acts that have been out. When Mike Paradinas was out last I thought he really sucked, with the exception of three songs that were good. I'm glad I wasn't disappointed last night!! I also can't wait to see Autechre @ The DEMF next weekend!!! ===== SWOPE TRANSMISSIONS - FRIDAY Evening 6-9pm (Pacific) http://home.earthlink.net/~efrans/swope-transmissions Listen @ KUCI 88.9Fm Irvine, CA Streaming on the net at http://kuci.org __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I'm going to have to pipe in and say that I think Richard Devine's last show here systematically dismantled what Autechre played last night, then broke each little piece with a flying suplex. Autechre was alright last night, but I wasn't really murdered as hard as I expected. I like most of the new album, I think their older albums like Amber are pretty crappy, but their set last night just seemed ... enh. The beats sucked last night. If some kid had been up there with turntables playing records with no beatmatching, and the results had sounded exactly like that, people would have been throwing things at his head. I liked how harsh and almost power-electronics-ish they'd get, but the experience as a whole was underwhelming. I thought that DJ set had more interesting combinations of sound. (This is someone's cue to leap in and explain to me that I'm obviously just a musical illiterate who is, unfortunately, not intelligent enough to appreciate the complexities of trainwrecking for an hour.) The crowd was exactly as expected. I wish the place had been filled with E-tarded ravers massaging each other and dancing, just for novelty. I like Ae, but I'd take Richard Devine over them without any hesitation. np: confield, for comparison purposes ---- Jeff Pitrman http://component.robotcore.net/ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

< I'm going to have to pipe in and say that I think Richard Devine's last show here systematically dismantled what Autechre played last night, then broke each little piece with a flying suplex. > The Richard Devine show I am refering to was the one at O2. I think he has played a show since then. I have heard several performance by him on CDRS, but I usually get bored of them after 15 minutes. < Autechre was alright last night, but I wasn't really murdered as hard as I expected. I like most of the new album, I think their older albums like Amber are pretty crappy, but their set last night just seemed ... enh. > I think everyone of their albums are pretty solid. Tri Repetae would probably be my favorite. Amber is pretty awesome. My least favorite thing they put out would be Ep7.

No complaints here. < If some kid had been up there with turntables playing records with no beatmatching, and the results had sounded exactly like that, people would have been throwing things at his head. > Hardly ... but hey isn't non beatmatching Djing what IDM djs are all about. MANY IDM people I have talked with don't appreciate good dj skills. < I liked how harsh and almost power-electronics-ish they'd get, but the experience as a whole was underwhelming. > I wasn't overwhelmed but I certainly had a very enjoyable evening. I thought Autechre was very intriguing. I missed some of the melodies from past tunes but it was still a great night, and look forward to seeing them again next week. < I thought that DJ set had more interesting combinations of sound. (This is someone's cue to leap in and explain to me that I'm obviously just a musical illiterate who is, unfortunately, not intelligent enough to appreciate the complexities of trainwrecking for an hour.) > Many of the Dj Sets were pretty unspectacular, but I thought Russell's set was really interesting. I've never heard anyone go from IDM to grindcore/death metal, and some of the noise he was playing sounded like old Skin Chamber/Controlled Bleeding - "Swallowing Scrap Metal" tunes. Cylob - Industrial Folk Songs was cool! I never really have high expectations for djs when I go to IDM events, so I wasn't disappointed. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! i don't know, ep7 is a nice transitional phase for what they are doing now. confield should have been expected considering what they were doing with ep7. I think ep7 has some brilliant pieces. Very textural, my favorite track being netion setinnel, followed by dropp. Beautiful stuff there.
