I'm going to have to pipe in and say that I think Richard Devine's last show here systematically dismantled what Autechre played last night, then broke each little piece with a flying suplex. Autechre was alright last night, but I wasn't really murdered as hard as I expected. I like most of the new album, I think their older albums like Amber are pretty crappy, but their set last night just seemed ... enh. The beats sucked last night. If some kid had been up there with turntables playing records with no beatmatching, and the results had sounded exactly like that, people would have been throwing things at his head. I liked how harsh and almost power-electronics-ish they'd get, but the experience as a whole was underwhelming. I thought that DJ set had more interesting combinations of sound. (This is someone's cue to leap in and explain to me that I'm obviously just a musical illiterate who is, unfortunately, not intelligent enough to appreciate the complexities of trainwrecking for an hour.)
The crowd was exactly as expected. I wish the place had been filled with E-tarded ravers massaging each other and dancing, just for novelty.
I like Ae, but I'd take Richard Devine over them without any hesitation.
np: confield, for comparison purposes
