Which did you see the cd or the 2x12"? The cd contains a lot of unique downtempo techno and experimental electronica. It may be somewhat of a challenging listen at first to the warp/skam/rephlex crowd but after a few listens you'll begin to hear that it actually takes the sound from the above labels a little further towards the experimental side. A few artists you may recognize on this comp are plan 9 (steve pickton & mark broom), ravers over venice (akin from irdial), td5 (voiteck anderson), low res, mr hazeltine (john tejada), and a lustmord remix too (i forget who he remixed). The 2x12" contains four of the tracks on the cd as well as four new very dancefloor-friendly tracks by low res, mannequin lung, r.e.a.l.m., and lucid lung (john tejada & the PR guys). All four of the new tracks incorporate highly innovative percussion and funky synth loops into unique techno masterpieces that really take my breath away. if you like somewhat minimal techno in the mark broom, john tejada, or even mike ink then you would like this doublepack. As i've said before, you really need both verions of the comp to get all the best tracks. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states

I'd like to second lance's recommendation of the Plug Research 2x12" compilation. haven't heard the cd, so i can't vouch for the differences, but this is by far one of the best records i've heard in quite awhile. Been finding myself drawn, as of late, to much more dancefloor-oriented, minimal-techno-affiliated music than the more stricly "IDM" (rephlexian, warpesque, etc) affairs, so it's refreshing to get knocked on my ass like i do by this comp. in not-dissimilar veins, y'all might want to check out surgeon's "basic tonal remake" (can anyone recommend futher surgeon records, past the 2 "basic tonal" pieces? there's a slew of stuff out there); and mike ink's Mabstab M:I:5, which i brought up a week or so ago, is one of the most wackest-ass, challengingest listens i've come across in ages. lance (or anyone)--what's the rundown on mike ink? if i dig the studio 1 and the mabstab, what else is in that vein? (we've already that the studio 1 remixes don't live up to the originals.) and how do all the studio 1 12"s measure up? the only one i have is silver; any particular standouts? relentlessly phil

Mike Ink has over 70 releases on a variety of different labels (Profan, Harvest, Studio 1, New Transatlantic, Ladomat, Force Inc, etc). I don't own much of his early stuff so i can't comment on that but i can highly recommend most of his more recent releases. To start with, all ten of Mike Ink's Studio 1 12"s are excellent ultra minimal techno slabs all of which are identified solely by the color of their label. My favorites are Blue, Red, Violet, Orange and light Green. If you want a sampler of what's on Studio 1, check out the Studio 1 comp cd released last year. But as mentioned before, stay away from the Thomas Brinkman Studio 1 remixes. They aren't half as good as the originals. Also well worth having are most of the releases on Mike's Profan label. On Profan Mike Ink records as M:I:5, Gas, Mint and Sweet Reinhard amongst others. There are about 25 releases on Profan so far and i have most of them. With the exception of the Pentax People and the two Thomas Brinkman Studio 1 variations 12"s, most are well worth having. There is also a Profan sampler comp cd called Kompakt 1 that will give you a taste of the different styles on the Profan label. The styles on Profan range from gritty basic channel styled techno to haunting dubby ambience to crisp minimal techno. My favorite Profan releases, although not all mike ink releases, are Jurgen Paape: Revel, Sweet Reinhard: Believe & M, Mint: Phonogram, Grungerman: Hout, and M:I:5: Rondo. A few other Mike Ink releases of note are the KLAR 1&2 12"s, The Return of Forever Sweet on Ladomat, the Love Inc R.E.S.P.E.C.T. rmxs on Force Inc, the Schatrax Mike Ink rmx 12", Polka Trax on Warp, and the two 12"s he co-produced with M.Mayer, Frost & Heaven, on New Trans- atlantic. -->-Lance--- p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states
