This page (a custom road case company) has dimensions for maximum
sizes for carry-on and luggage. If you can make it work by plane, I
recommend it-- I flew to a few gigs last year and took a small road
case as luggage. It worked brilliantly.
I don't recommend the train at all. It's like a greyhound bus on
rails. The last time I took Amtrak I got in 6 hours late on a 12
hour trip.
