so i'm going to take a stab at recording a live show to md - specifically the upcoming ae gig at the el rey in la. i've got a shiny little silver sony but my question for the seasoned out there is: what brand/type of mic would you recommend? can i get by with a simple jacket-lapel-clip-on arrangement (to keep both hands free for maximum chin-stroking ability) or should i invest in a more standard mic (like that $99 sony model) that i'll have to hold through the entire gig? i saw a few options recently in the sony store at the sf metreon, but didn't pick up anything. i know the thread on how to smuggle came up a bit ago, but i don't remember anything specifically on mics in the last several months. advice on the mic and general recording techniques, to maximize signal-to-noise, is appreciated. thanks, ray lind

I have that sony stereo microphone lapel mic that requires phantom power (a battery, or from the recording device). I use it with my TCD8 DAT machine (that hasn't broken yet knock wood) and find it to be fine for making recording shows and conversations. we captured a very nice Legendary Pink Dots show to dat last summer i believe. -Gil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I use the SONY Electret Condenser Stereo Microphone ECM-MS907. I havent had it long but if you heard the ATP recordings thats what I used there. Its also worked really well for getting samples. Got alot of cool samples on the tube and buses while in London. We were actually in London on a day when the underground went on strike for 24 hours. As a matter of fact that was the same day of the Pole, Jah Wobble show. Anyways...everyone was trying to get on the bus when it was full and the ticket taker had to tell people they couldnt get on. Well this one guy chased downt he bus and jumped on while it was moving and the ticket taker and the renagade passenger got in a pretty humorous argument which i recorded and it came out quite nice. Anyway back to the mic. Yes I have to hold it and run the wire down my sleeve but I think it was worth it. It was tough getting the BOC set cause two guys by the stage...who I am guessing were Skam were having the security guards try and stop people from taking pictures and recordings. And being right in the front the security guards were actually reaching right over me to stop people with cameras. Little did they know. Anyways again....the mic...i kepp rambling...apologies...The mic works off batteries ( but ive been using the same one since i got it and according to the manual battery life is approxiamted at 200 hours)....and has two picup settings....it pics up in 90 degrees or 120 degrees. So it picks up in really good stereo sound. I cant give you comparisons against others caus ethis is the onyl one I have used. I ordered it from www.crutchfeild.com and it ran me about $100 us. Hope that helps a little. a friend of mine has a solution for hands-free operation of that $99 sony one. get yourself some old baseball hat, and duct tape the mic to it. it may look a *bit* conspicuous, but certainly less so than holding a mic in the air. as a sidenote, the quality of that particular microphone is top-notch - you won't be disappointed.

This was sort of talked about on the list a couple weeks ago (although it may have been the ambient list) and as a direct result of this I purchased a pair of Binaural Headphone-Mounted mics at http://www.soundprofessionals.com/ Direct link to said mic is here: http://www.soundprofessionals.com/moreinfopages/binaural/sphmc1.html My first attempt at a field recording went very bad. I took my dog for a walk along the beach and brought the recorder with me - thought I'd get some nice recordings of the ocean and birds etc. The recording came out terrible though - sounded more like I stuck the mic *inside* the water. Completely distorted... Anyone have suggestions for a better method of field recording or where I may have gone wrong?
