I got a Cd yesterday from a group called "Scorn"...the album was called "Evanescence"... I would classify it as Gothic/Ambient/Dub...Along with the disc I got a short bio on the grou...but damn if i didnt leave it at the station last night...welll...if i can still get it, ill post the discography it had on it... The music was good and I will be posting a short review of it this evening... Its a dark and scary piece in general...i think I would understand it better if i had some background...If I was familiar with their older releases...nevertheless, I did still enjoy the music... Until later... Jasonosaj P.s. Some of you folks would enjoy the Trans-slovenia-express...and some wouldnt...i found myself liking about half the stuff on there...and the other half was too abrasive for me... later J

This is a couple of guys who used to be a lot like Godflesh. Godflesh on acid, maybe. Evanescence is way cool. The cover has a sticker proclaiming "redefining ambient dub" and it does have a healthy go at it. VERY dubby. Use BIG speakers. I give this release an emphatic thumbs up. =B)

Scorn is a perpetual topic of conversation over on rec.music.industrial, because the main personages behind it are veterans of the Industrial Grindcore end of the spectrum, namely Mick Harris formerly of Napalm Death and also currently of God. Justin Broadrick of Godflesh appeared on several of the early Scorn releases as well. Justin has released several solo-oriented recordings which could be called "Ambient" of a sort; just not the "Ambient" most of us are used to - he did an album called "Ghosts" as Techno Animal which is absolutely stupendous, and another project called "One" as Final which is sort of "minimalistic guitar ambient", whatever that means :-) (Durutti Column it ain't) Back when I was an Industrialist I was quite fond of Scorn; as there are several Former Industrialists With A Clue on this list, perhaps others will chime in with their opinions ... I was intrigued by the sticker saying "Redefining Ambient Dub", but not enough to buy it. - Greg

Somebody mention Godflesh? :-) Greg's spot one w/r/t this whole Scorn bit. Some of the best ambient out there is probably the odder stuff, ala Godflesh's "Pure II" (from _Pure_), where ambient isn't just electronic noodling. Good stuff, really, and you don't really have to be a Grindcore fan to appreciate it (although it helps you get through the rest of the record). I haven't picked up the record yet, either - there's just too much to buy right now -- but I'd recommend it on what I've heard and read. More than likely, however, earlier Scorn is in the vein of Godflesh, Napalm Death, and Pitch Shifter, as well as the Swamp Terrorists and maybe even some Young Gods material. It should be noted, too, that any ambient/trance fan should really do themselves a favor by looking at different facets of trance; i.e. Sonic Boom and the wonders of Spaceman 3, Godflesh (OK, not trance, but a good rhythm), or the aforementioned Durutti Column. Remember, repetition is its own reward. :-) Dave .----------------------------------------------dmanning@dreamland.unomaha.edu | "There's something the matter with me" dmanning@cwis.unomaha.edu | --Intermix dmanning@eworld.com .-------------------------------------------- dgmanning@aol.com

I know it won't help you much but I have to say that I love them. I have almost all older Scorn stuff except for a couple of recent releases and all of them appeal to me much. Unfortunately I cannot review them for ya as these are all traditional releases by him but it depends on the year it came out. Gyral was made right after Bullen left Harris alone in the project which made good for it as far as I'm concerned. The album is strictly minimal industrial dub in its best. Colossus and White Irises Blind are separate releases. Collosus, White Irises Blind and Deliverance are from Bullen era and feature vocals and such. The one have to keep in mind that in years Scorn grew more ambient and minimal as opposed to their first releases like Vae Solis and Lick Forever Dog released on Earache (famous grind, doom, industrial label) home of the notorious Napalm Death, which for some time hosted MJ Harris in its rooster which tells a lot about his musical tastes at the time. Currently he makes absolutely different stuff in projects like Quad or Lull, though still continuing to elaborate Scorn evolution. In brief, if you are a fan of MJ Harris or Scorn buy those. I am really enjoying: Mark Spybey & Mick Harris - Bad roads Young drivers (Hushhush) Website of hushhush: http://www.hushush.com/ I am not a huge scorn fan but I was really taken with this. Very nice use of beats and atmospherics. About 95% of this is beat oriented. The rest is strange unsettleing ambient. For a good review (better than I could do) see: http://www.nezzwerk.com/seven/reviews/album_review.php?id=347 I highly recommend this CD. Other notes: Scorn has a new release on Hymen. Have not had a chance to fully listen yet but it is probably worth checking out. on a semi-related note: the new Dead Voices on Air CD is fantastic (but it is hardly IDM. Best described as: Krautrock takes an elevator ride with Mark Spybey and the result is something that is all together familiar and alien at the same time). -daniel: Head Monkey: Mad Monkey Records: http://www.madmonkey.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

This brings up a question I've had for a while. I'm in love with michael brook's infinite guitar...any recommendations for other work similar to this sort of experimentation with guitar? I really liked branca's symphony for guitars (#3?), but I'm looking for something with less symphonic flavor...okay, this is vague and sloppy, but I think it makes a bit of sense...any ideas? If you must know, this was a response to some lister who asked some general question about Scorn, who I happen to really like. But on top of that, one thing that I've found extremely valuable on this list is that there are so many people who are knowledgable and are willing to share their opinions on all sorts of different music. Just within the past few months we've had threads on everything from classical to jazz to metal to Madonna. Besides, the lines are so blurred now as to what is IDM and what isn't. Once you rule out Scorn, somebody will want to rule out Squarepusher, and then Bola and so on just because they think "they're not IDM anymore" and then we're back to arguing about arguing. np: The Golden Age of Russian Guitar Vol. 2 Oleg Timofeyev guitarist

Greetings From Birmingham is the new album. Mick Harris has been stuck in that dub rut for so long (in terms of his Scorn stuff- Logghi Barogghi, that live album Whine) that I wasn't expecting anything different in this new release. But I have to say it's not bad. I don't think he'll ever sound like he did back in Scorn's glory days of Colossus and Evenescence (I wonder to what extent Nicholas James Bullen had to do with how great they were), but the album is better than I expected. Some of the same dub he's been doing, but some really heavy plodding and sometimes screachy darness all the way around. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

great. different. not _too_ different, you understand (this is Scorn we're talking about) but generally a little more... i don't want to say "upbeat" so I guess I'll just say "faster with a more trebly kick to the drums." it's not quite as claustrophobic as before, it seems more just to revel in its own warped sounds (and they are quite warped). i think it's the best thing since logghi barogghi. ===== the humble abbott arthur purvis set his hand hereto __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? All of Scorn stuff is amazing! That's not IMHO that's a pure fact! 8) Luckily I have a friend who's a huge Harris fan and I have access to most of MJ's stuff. The only album that I do not like is "Vae Solis" on Earache 1992 it is too harsh and grindy to me... Starting from Evanescence his music evolved and enhanced with every release. New Album is great as usual. Must buy for fans.
