Vapourspace is ok, glad to have seen him live, but Orbital made me forget about everything else. Man, I've never been into a live performance like that before, the music just puts me into another state. Aphex Twin was good, but it is hardly a "performance". He just sits behind his equipment, turns a few knobs, presses a few buttons, and lites up a cig. Moby was hilarious. Missed Young American Primitive, cuz my buddy couldn't find the damn place, we was driving around San Fran. looking for the Galleria, asked about 10 people where it was, no one knew! YAP was on first, then Vapourspace, AFX, Orbital, and finally the little bald guy who pretends to play equipment that he pretends is plugged in. Oh, yeah, there were dj's in between acts. My disappointments: didn't get to meet any of the performers, music was WAY too loud, and Moby didn't do a stage dive (I wanted so bad to see him to a belly flop on the hardwood floor, would have been worth the $15 bucks alone!). ORBITAL ARE GOD.

AARGH HERESY - "Music way too loud" The louder the better - I saw the Aphex Twin, Orbital,etc at Brixton Last Year with a 50k sound sytem and I have NEVER heard them sound as good. Wake up !!!. Also don't be gutted that you haven't met any of the performers cos they are usually so full of themselves that they aren't worth talking to. DJ's are a lot friendlier

I saw the NASA tour in Boston and the thing I liked best about it was the amount of showmanship they had inbetween performers and in the chill out room. There were these spacemen/construction workers wandering around carrying a long piece of ductwork and flashing flashlights. At one point, in the chillout room, one of them taped a message "Think for yourself" on the floor while the other one held a flashlight. It was very surreal. Also, the stage crews seemed to be hamming it up a bit. Moving to the music as they set up the equipment on stage. It was really funny when they taped down moby's keyboard and drum machine. Anyway, the music was excellent and I loved orbital's hats, but the thing that impressed me the most about this show was the care they used to make it seem one connected show rather than just a collection of four bands. Very cool [fletcher]

Actually I was there at Brixton too and thought the only thing wrong with the night was that it wasn't loud enough, treble was fine but it needed more low end. As for all you namby pamby Yanks who go to raves with ear plugs, get a life :) I nearly died laughing when I read about people going to raves with plugs. I've been to a rave with a full 20k sound rig in a fairly samll room, that managed to move my insides around like nothing else (literally) for the 10 hours I was there. Am I deaf even slightly? No. The only way you're going to damage you're hearing is if you were exposed to this regularly. As long as you give your ears a rest, you shouldn't have any problems. Pardon? What bollocks. Orbital are some of the most down to earth performers I've ever met. And Aphex is a friendly bloke as well. - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

well i guess in the UK you don't have idiot sound system people who run the highs too high and don't bother checking the room for proper EQ prior to starting the party. here in the US that sort of stupidity is common. fortunately, at least locally, people are beginning to get clued in to the possibility of hearing damage and more sound people are actually checking the rooms with noise generators and spectrum analyzers in order to set up proper EQing.

i go out every week. i take care of my hearing. as a musician, anything less would be total stupidity. i have left plenty of raves because the sound was too shrill or harsh. i hope you get tinnitus real soon. i've already got a partial case of it and it is no fun. when you're 30 and your ears are constantly ringing, think of me, OK? True. Since there's so much less of the "rockstar" image around electronic musicians, and since there isn't such a separation between "producer" and "consumer", they're all pretty much kind people (until they get on a major label :)) I can vouch for Dubtribe and Richie Hawtin as being kind as hell too.... I once saw a PBS show on hearing where the researcher tested hearing of back country natives against the average American. Seventy year old people living away from civilization all their lives have the hearing of teenagers. Frankly, I'd take the advice of ear doctors and the National Hearing Institute over hearsay when it comes to my hearing. I suppose you enjoy staring down laser beams too?

Don't get me wrong. Aphex's music beat me up too, but Orbital just seems to enjoy playing live more, and it comes across in their performances. I like being able to SEE the artist perform also, not just hide from everyone while some bloke with an Aphex T-shirt dances in front of me. Hell, I could've been the dancer. I wonder what that guy gets paid. But that's just me. -boB

All I can say is, when I left the building my ears hurt and were ringing like crazy. I didn't have earplugs, but when I covered my ears, I noticed that the music sounded clearer, less distorted. And your hearing CAN be damaged when exposed to high decibles for only short periods of time (hours, even minutes). I'd like to be able to hear Orbital 16 (the fuschia album) when it comes out in April, 2037.

I don't have a clue what they do with regards to sound set up, but I assume that when sound rigs are as big and complicated as they are, that you can't just throw them in a room and let them go...

We'll see won't we. Some how I don't think I'll still be going to the same clubs at 30. I suspect that by far the biggest threat to my hearing is from my hifi at home, to which I listen for long periods at reasonably high volumes. I guess this must be similar to the threat posed by Walkmans (which I don't use incidently ('cos I've got nothing to copy onto tape with, not for any 'health' reasons)). Now this is a problem I'm really worried about. *I* want to be able to listen to Ambient Works XXIV, straight off the chip, whilst looking at the groovy artwork on it's multimedia interactive cover and admiring the holo of RDJ performing, still hidden behind aload of keyboards and an antique ST and monitor. greg 3 0 3
