Apologies for corss-posting, but I can't recall which list it was first mentioned on, but it was definitely mentioned. This Belong disc won't win any awards for originality, but what it lacks in that department it makes up for in emotive valency. It started off reminding me of a digital MBV meeting Fennesz and a glitchy Gas (the gauzy veiled part sans doof-doof kick). Then third track reminded me more of Eluvium's 'Zerthis Was a Shivering Human Image' than anything. Now it's staking a claim for its own unique voice on track 4 'I'm too sleepy... shall we swim?' Did someone say somewhere that this album was 'inspired' by the New Orleans experience of last year (I think it happened in October)?. Or was it more like with Basinski whose 'Disintegration Loops' was sort of endowed by him with concurrent/retrospective linkage with 9/11 rather than having direct 'inspiration' from it? All these melodic structures being sucked down as if in a vortex or submerged under processing... kind of a metaphor for the event...? alan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

stunning album! I've been into that a lot and looking forward to the upcoming UK Belong tour. In a somewhat similar fashion, what are people making of the Nathan Fake album? I picked that up cos it was described as a more poppy MBV. I've only listened through it a few times, but it has nowhere near the same emotional response as, say, listening to the Belong album. I mean its okay, i would probably have loved it if it wasnt for all the really hyped up reviews. Some context: i havent heard any of the remix 12"s which i believe he made his name doing. Oh, not quite IDM, would prob be better posted to the ambient list if i was still subscribed, but i cannot tear myself away from the new Taylor Deupree album "Stil.", its fscking excellent! Theres not much to describe of it, its total classic microsound style, but theres just an elusive something about it that makes it stand head and shoulders above a lot of the other similar output. I've been trying to listen to the new Kranky Greg Kowalski cd also, but again, keep coming back to Taylor Deupree instead. ( i know you all know i mean the label Kranky and the artist Greg Kowalski, but rereading my email before i send it, i just thought wow, thats an excellent artists name "Kranky Greg Kowlaski"!) thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Right. The Nathan Fake I know is miles away from MBV, apart perhaps from 'The Sky was Pink', which betrays vague Shieldsisms in its digitised slightly overdriven chord sustains. The rest I've heard sounds like a variant of tech-house to me, be it ever so slightly off- kilter. Dunno if 'Outhouse' is on the album, but that 12" track was a very BoC-sounding warbly synth 'riff' taken for a sort of 'knowing' bangin' techno outing. Entertaining, but more 'dance' in it than er... 'intelligence'. I don't think Fake's fake, he's just been touted by some as something he ain't. alan --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I've not yet heard the album, but there's a neat live set featuring some of the tracks off of it free to download up on 4four.org, which should allow many who've not yet experienced the Fake sound to sample and decide for themselves whether there's any more to the claims than just merely hype. Having said that, I've personally found listening to his dance floor targeted releases to be nothing short of an absolute treat ! Equals parts emotive and intelligent. Encouraging that the "tech-house" scene may yet start to credibly deliver onto us an assuredly "danceable" intelligent dance music afterall... some of the time anyways. If you haven't already done so, go and take down Dinamo as proof. One of my favourite tracks of the last year. Handsome stuff altogether. |---------+----------------------------> | | Alan.R.Lockett@br| | | istol.ac.uk | | | | | | 29/03/2006 23:45 | | | | |---------+----------------------------> >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: thorsten sideb0ard <thorsten@highpointlowlife.com> | | cc: idm@hyperreal.org | | Subject: Re: [idm] Belong - October Language | >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Quoting thorsten sideb0ard <thorsten@highpointlowlife.com>:

that mix is pretty good, a lot of its from the album, just over half i think, comparing the tracklisting of the set and the album track names. Dismissing the hype, i've found myself returning to this album quite a lot in the past few days, and had this live set on repeat at work yesterday. grows on you. ----- Anyone going to the big Seed Soviet party in London tonite? Really good lineup with Modeselektor, Neil Landstrumm, B12, but i'm going to see Greg Kowalski tonite, and moving house tomorrow (and getting old!) thor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
