Let me preface with this: I'm not a giant fan of Orbital; I don't really like the first (yellow/green) album, I like the Brown album OK, and I really liked Snivilisation and In Sides. I didn't quite get Middle of Nowhere until The Altogether came out. I really liked The Altogether, which made me like Middle of Nowhere more. The Altogether is now my favorite Orbital release... I didn't like the Blue album at first. Initially because the good tracks were more like their older work - a bit more repetitive, a bit less pop-oriented. Also because there are a couple of very annoying tracks - "Bath Time" and "Easy Serv" that just ruin the whole album for me. They're too gimmicky, break up the flow, and bring everything else down a level. But, as per a suggestion I read on this very list, if you remove those tracks and replace them with "Technologicque Park" (from the XXX soundtrack - *shudder*), "What Happens Next?" (from the One Perfect Sunrise single), and "Initiation" (Blue Album japan bonus track) - you end up with a much better Blue Album. Just pop them in where you feel they should go... I did that, and now it's right up there with the rest, I love listening to it. Clive placed it somewhere between their older work and their most recent work - I agree. It's a nice, balanced career ender - provided you remove the ghastly tracks and replace them with some better ones. -adam damek.org Mediadrome@aol.com wrote:

Not as good as Green, Brown, Diversions or Snivilization, but better than all the rest! "One Perfect Sunrise" is a storming track, but could have been even better, I feel, if it had just "gone somewhere", if you get what I mean. I'll still take Richard H Kirk and Beaumont Hannant as preferable (comparable) alternatives, any day. Just IMHO, of course! Ha! - no, Snivilisation is very good, and The Altogether is only better! One Perfect Sunrise gets lots of deserving praise, but I sometimes think I like You Lot better. It's so Orbital, and so... British. flame on! -adam damek.org Greg wrote:

I think a lot of people (maybe you, too) were hoping for more Halcyon+On+On with Snivilisation and that is not what it's about. It's definitely a darker vibe, but the long tracks show them stretching out into proto-In Sides material, and it is quality stuff. Consider that they kept coming back to the themes set out in "Sad But True" (the two versions of "Sad but New" on the second disc of In Sides) and Attached (in the Peel sessions "Semi-Detached") -- they knew they were on to something. As if that wasn't enough, the corker is "Are We Here", 15 minutes of absolutely top-notch junglist Orbital. Go back and listen to it again, maybe you'll come around... -- - Eric Sorenson - Explosive Networking - http://eric.explosive.net - --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the blue album... when I 1st heard it before domestic release this summer, I could tell who it was before I found out, which is good imho and that coupled with their intent in finality makes the title fitting to the mood. I feel the album is a very mature statement of who they are and what they were trying to achieve with the sound they have been developing for years. it explores a lot of terrain in contemporary dance music but still has the approach and technique that gives that unique character. I enjoy their entire catalog of albums, the album depending with the mood. Also, they did a cool soundtrack with Michael Kamen arranging and conducting strings for the movie Event Horizon. Although a lot of opinions I've seen have been very split on blue, If you are an old school orbital fan you will immediately or eventually appreciate the blue album. later, Nth G.
