Let me preface with this: I'm not a giant fan of Orbital; I don't really
like the first (yellow/green) album, I like the Brown album OK, and I
really liked Snivilisation and In Sides. I didn't quite get Middle of
Nowhere until The Altogether came out. I really liked The Altogether,
which made me like Middle of Nowhere more. The Altogether is now my
favorite Orbital release...
I didn't like the Blue album at first. Initially because the good
tracks were more like their older work - a bit more repetitive, a bit
less pop-oriented. Also because there are a couple of very annoying
tracks - "Bath Time" and "Easy Serv" that just ruin the whole album for
me. They're too gimmicky, break up the flow, and bring everything else
down a level.
But, as per a suggestion I read on this very list, if you remove those
tracks and replace them with "Technologicque Park" (from the XXX
soundtrack - *shudder*), "What Happens Next?" (from the One Perfect
Sunrise single), and "Initiation" (Blue Album japan bonus track) - you
end up with a much better Blue Album. Just pop them in where you feel
they should go... I did that, and now it's right up there with the
rest, I love listening to it.
Clive placed it somewhere between their older work and their most recent
work - I agree. It's a nice, balanced career ender - provided you
remove the ghastly tracks and replace them with some better ones.
