Hey there and HNY and so on. Would anyone here have some information as how to create a music label? It has been quite a while that the idea walks with me, but I dont really know much about it; I only produced the cd of my former band and it was quite a flop. Basically, I dont intend to produce/edit commercial music; and I dont intend to make money from it either, tho it wouldnt be a "no no" if so... Just not to lose any would be great. I guess two important points are, first, to produce good quality music, and second, to have a good distribution network, the second point being maybe far more important than the first one. So if anyone has some experience and/or piece of advice, you are welcome, it would be greatly appreciated. Thnx, cyrill. C'est tres difficile I suppose. The label I most respect and probably has the most success in electronic music other than Warp is Mike Paradinas' (aka Mu-Ziq, Kid Spatula, etc.) label Planet Mu. I've read that he works probably about 70 hours a week to keep everything running and decently profitable. It's definitely a labor of love (http://www.planet-mu.com). If you ask me, slsk is crushing the electronic music system--and, please, nobody start up that old bullshit file-sharing argument. I'm just as guilty because I've downloaded empires of music but eventually, one has to concede that the economics don't work out if people get your shit for free. But, having a cool label would be the greatest fun--even if I took a hit financially. It's the same principle as being a promoter. If you have to bleed a little but have a wicked party that everybody loved, then that's what it's about, innit? My two cents.... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! A lot of people bitch about distribution in the u.s. for electronic music, so basically if you wanna start a label, get the money together, send out at least 200 - 300 promos worldwide of the first release after you press it, mail promos to distributors about a week after the promotions go out then 4 - 5 weeks after sending out the promos hit up the distributors with a brief but friendly message, a good rate (maybe $5.00 per cd), and hope. I have a website with distributor, promo, and other info here: http://www.fourthcity.net/label_forums/ oh yeah and please only start a label if your working with new amazing artists. the entire hey maybe lusine will do a track for me doesn't work, I'd only start a label if something is so good you have to release it and they haven't released anywhere else. Also don't go around asking for a production and distro deal after only 2 releases and regardless of what you do, your gonna lose money on the first release or 2 until distro works out and you know who among that pack of 300 promos is worth sending to (i.e. what writers love your label and what ones don't review it). Regardless it's a lot of fun and very little money, but worth doing if you have the time, energy, and the ability to bother me excessively about booking your artists =) Peace, A On Jan 11, 2005, at 9:19 PM, John Counts wrote:

Running a label is like any other project... Come up with your plan and execute it. Let it start small. Sell your CDs direct to the public at shows that you throw and/or play. Then sell to local shops willing to take shit on commision. Make friends with a geek, and get a good site together. Or go all MP3. Find new places to promote yourself, figure out what works and doesn't. Research the industry, plenty of info abound (i've attached something to get you started). Make friends with other label owners, and work with them on their own project, until you get a feel for how it works. Have a support system. Friends and Associates that are willing to spread the word, and help do the work it takes. Go to shows. Everyone in Electronic Music is extremely accessible, especially at their gigs. I mean I've booked or helped throw a number of events with local/national/international artists.... almost all of them hang out in the crowd before and after their gig. Have Fun. Cuz if it's a labor of love, and you hate every minute of it. And more than likely, you should Hire Andrew Jones. mad love, .eric * * *xenlab (music) { * / .nfo + d.load =/ http://xenlab.ezrpm.com/ <http://xenlab.ezrpm.com> *}* John Counts wrote:
