Yo playas, I've really been getting into hip-hop lately, a genre I have ignored for so many years. So I'm seeking for recommendations for really good indie hip-hop albums. I have enjoyed a lot of the stuff I've heard from Dej Jux, so I figured it would be a good place to start. The question then stands: what do you think is the best thing Def Jux has put out yet? That Ping Pong by the Anti-Pop Consortium is a pretty tight tune, would Arrythmia be worth purchasing? What about Herbaliser's Blow Your Headphones or Something Wicked This Way Comes? Or some hip-hop classics, are there some records you would consider essential? Yeah, I still think I should at least start with the indie-stuff - I wouldn't feel worth my Converses if I listened to mainstream hip-hop. thanks, .: visa tapani --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like Aesop Rock's releases, although i like the older ones more than the newer ones. When I saw Beans perform with Prefuse, he also did a really good show so perhaps that would be a good album to pick up. Also, are you looking for hip hop with rapping over it, or just hip hop? And with rapping, what kind of rapping? -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

if you're gonna go classic (which sort of automatically means somewhat mainstream), may i suggest Mos Def - Black on Both Sides Gang Starr - Moment of Truth (the Full Clip greatest hits comp is also good.) (and every project DJ Premier has produced is probably at least worth a listen.) Digable Planets -- Blowout Comb and Reachin' De la Soul -- all the early albums Tribe Called Quest -- again all the early albums. there is so much more great classic hip hop, but these are some of my favorites. be aware though, that they all have quite a different sound from the Def Jux style. as far as new stuff goes, chocolate industries has some good releases, like the stuff by Diverse, Push Button Objects, the East Flatbush Project - Tried by 12 remix comp (worth the purchase just for the autechre remix). The Urban Renewal comp is good, but somewhat uneven IMO. I also really like the Caural -- Stars on my Ceiling album. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the Def Jux sound. I find the production is often too busy for me. i like a cleaner more sparse sound I guess. but i do like aesop rock and Mr. Lif. Oh and of course, RJD2's Dead Ringer is the best thing on the label. but to my ears it's quite different than everything else on there. it's definitely an instant classic. hope that helps, dave visa <v.kuoppala@pp.inet.fi> wrote: Yo playas, I've really been getting into hip-hop lately, a genre I have ignored for so many years. check: http://www.botanicadeljibaro.com hip-Hop as curated by the Beta Bodega Coalition, plus for all you idm freaks, they got remixes from Beta and Schematic folks on a few lps. Check: Serum, Cyne, Seth P. Brundel (part of Algorithim), and others. What else Sound Ink in New York has some good releases, that new Dr. Doom they put out is bad. New Souls of Mischief on Chocolate Industries and the new Push Button Objects on Choc is good. and of course counterflow, 5 Deez etc. that Lex label Warp is running, and Metatronix check Supersoul, Judah Mason, others Stonesthrow label give them a listen, J-Live, Large Professor, jesus there's to much, pick up an issue of Wax Poetics, Elemental, Xlr8r, whatever and cruise for hip-hop or find a good web site for reviews, what is a good web site for hip-hop reviews anyway? -a On Thursday, June 19, 2003, at 05:00 PM, dave jakhelln wrote:

If you like Ping Pong, Arrhythmia's worth the purchase. Just avoid the "vs." album with Matthew Shipp. Shipp is amazing, but Antipop sounds like they're taking a shit on these tracks. Some indie picks: cLOUDDEAD - (self title) Dose One, Why?, Odd Nosdam and friends make some of the best music I've ever heard. This music has amazing depth. I've heard them compared to Boards of Canada, and can easily see why. Their last EP (The Sound of a Handshake / This About a City) is even better, but vinyl only. Dilated Peoples - The Platform I don't know if these guys are still considered "underground," but this is one of my favorite "no bullshit," straight up hip hop records. Restiform Bodies - (self title) This record is all over the place. From ambient drones, to new wave, to drum 'n bass, to old school hip hop, they cover it all and manage to make it work. Fantastic lyrics on this one, too. No battle raps here. Classics: Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique Adam, Adam, and Mike make some incredibly forward looking hip hop with the Dust Brothers. I can't believe this record is 14 years old. Deltron 3030 - (self title) Dan, Del, and Kid Koala make space age hip hop before that whole "Gorillaz" thing. De La Soul - Three Feet High and Rising Despite popularizing the "hip hop skit," this is one of the greats. Their sophomore effort (De La Soul is Dead) is also quite good. DJ Shadow - Endtroducing... Absolutely fantastic, if you're into the instrumental hip hop thing. If you're into RJD2, this is essential listening (the reverse also applies). See also: El Stew. Wu Tang Clan - 36 Chambers I keep waiting for them to top this. The Ghost Dog score (not the "soundtrack") comes close. Proceed with caution... your mileage my vary. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

No More Wig For Ohio (Odd Nosdam) is also a nice ride indeed...sort of a catchall pastiche molded into hip-hop pants. The Boards of Canada influence is apparent on this one as well. It's as if he challenges himself to make his own version of hip-hop from some of the most unlikely sources. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Everyone else has recommened most of what I'd go for except Anticon [ http://www.anticon.com ] but please ignore "Something Wicked This Way Comes" as it's more like an over produced pop exploration in pro-tools than hip hop. I was a big herbaliser fan until that album, but it really sucked ass. _muff._ xo --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

some echoes and some new voices. mostly backpacker fodder, cuz thats what I tend to feel: * cLOUDEAD - s/t (mush) : you need this, and it's hella cheap. 3X12 for $12??? their peel session 10" is wicked, as well. Boom Bip and Dose One - Circle (mush) : opened the floodgates... mush diversity. *El-P - Fantastic Damage (Def Jux) : hip-hop for the apocalypse, amazing album through and through. * Deep Puddle Dynamics - The Taste of Rain, Why Kneel? (anticon) : great collab album (dose, sole, slug, alias) * Jel - (meat and oil ep, greenball, etc) pretty much anything with his name on it is ill, beat-wise. * Wobbly - Wild Why (tb6) : dunno if it's 'hip-hop', but I think it is. so full it could burst. yoyoyoyoYOOYOYYOYYOOYOYOOYYOOOO!!!! *Atmosphere - Overcast! (rhymesayers) my favorite from them; all 1000 pieces are here in this puzzle box. others worth checking: Deltron 3030 - (s/t) 75 ark Aesop Rock (def jux) Lexoleum cd (lex) .... playayaout. -j.

I definitely recommend the French TTC (Big Dada/Ninja Tune) as they are bringing something quite experimental to hip-hop with a great sense of humor. On the classical side, I've been enjoying SLUM VILLAGE as well. I'm sure people will come up with alot of good indie suggestions. My personal suggestion is Dalek - their last album is one of my favs. But as an aside - if you really want to "get" indie hiphop, being familiar with some mainstream hiphop definitely helps put it in perspective. Not to mention that there are alot of good "mainstream" acts. Let me jump in here, as I am a natural born hip-hopper turned electronic music fanatic. "would Arrythmia be worth purchasing?" Yep - Anti-pop Consortium is on point, no doubt - this album shatters. Some recommendations... Canibal Ox - especially if you like Def Jux - Vast Aire brings it dirty J-Live - ill lyricist any way you cut it and "All of the Above" is a favorite Living Legends Crew- if you like MURS of Def Jux, this is his clique (I am fond of Scarub's stuff myself) Mystik Journeymen - part of the LLC Planet Asia - more of that Left Coast sound Madlib/Quasimoto - cratediggers beware - try "The Unseen" for some blunted beats Lootpack/Peanut Butter Wolf - see Madlib Anticon - either love 'em or hate 'em (Sole, Dose One, etc.) Oldominion - don't sleep on the Pacific Northwest Busdriver - flows faster than anyone - his new "Temporary Forever" album is classic Solesides/Quannum Projects - DJ Shadow, Latyrx, Blackalicious, etc. - enough said As for the classics (without going to far back into the more electro/b-boy oriented stuff)...I firmly believe that Rakim is the hypest emcee ever to grace the planet, so I would start with Eric B. & Rakim, Freestyle Fellowship, BDP, Hieroglyphics, Pharcyde, Black Sheep, Ultramagnetic MC's, EPMD, UTFO, Slick Rick ...but don't forget Black Star (Talib Kweli & Mos Def), Common, De la Soul, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Outkast, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, The Alkoholiks, etc. - more recent, but been around too. Hope this helps.........God I love hip-hop... Just going off the top of the dome here... for what its worth, I like Very Mercanery over both of those other Herbaliser albums. I really dig Anti-Pop Consortium, but I wasn't too into the Beans solo. I think its kind of a sum-is-greater-than-the-parts scenario. Anyhow, I think I still like Tragic Epilogue the best, but you can't go wrong with Arrythmia. DEFINITELY investigate Wu-Tang. 36 Chambers is a good place to start. GZA's Liquid Swords is awesome. The ODB albums are patchy, but hilarious all the same. There is gold to be found in almost all the various solo albums. And then you can go off on a thousand different RZA tangents, but I've been digging on the old Gravediggaz stuff recently. Bobby Digi too. -Aaron ----- Original Message ----- From: visa <v.kuoppala@pp.inet.fi> Date: Thursday, June 19, 2003 4:34 pm Subject: [idm] hip-hop recommendations

I saw The Weather live a month or two ago and it was pretty awesome. They had some interesting video stuff they were projecting, but in between songs, occasionally the video would feature Daedelus back at "The Weather Headquarters" or something and it was pretty hilarious. Overall though, I think that Busdriver and Radioinactive were feeling pretty frustrated with the pathetic crowd. It was an early weeknight show and the turnout was weak and bodies were stiff. Anyway, I forget the name of the guy who opened up, but him and Radioinactive did a sort of encore performance of this song "Farmer's Market of the Beast" that was on an amazing compilation from '99 called Beneath the Surface. That is the relavent information here. Go pick up Beneath the Surface. Its an amazing collection of L.A. underground rappers including Aceyalone and Self Jupiter from Freestyle Fellowship. The production on it is truly top notch. And the Weather album *is* a totally awesome album. But I find myself liking the Busdriver solo album Temporary Forever better. I don't know. But it IS the same Daedelus putting records out on Mush and Eastern Developments. I bought some EP (Household something or other) of his on Eastern Developments and the only good thing to come out of it was that remix Prefuse 73 did of Busy Signal (which happens to be my favorite track on the new Prefuse album). But his production on The Weather was much better. ----- Original Message ----- From: David Dow <taoconductor@yahoo.com> Date: Thursday, June 19, 2003 6:20 pm Subject: Re: RE: [idm] hip-hop recommendations

this made me think of the Mos Def, Diverse, Prefuse 73's 'Wylin Out' 12" I got several months ago... The original mix is often badmouthed or "ehh"'d off because it was somewhat of a let down (i think you'd expect more from a line up like this,..its a pretty typical track). For that reason, the b-side remixes by rjd2 are often overlooked / not check out as much. I highly recommend checkin it out.. Might as well check out the original too if you haven't heard it (old news). --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I like Def Jux and would rank 2 of their albums as the label's best: EL-P "Fantastic Damage" and Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein".

Old: De La Soul "3 Feet High and Rising" & "De La Soul is Dead" Public Enemy - Their first 5 albums, although I like "Fear of a Black Planet" the least of these. Slick Rick "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" Showbiz & AG "Runaway Slave" O.C. "Word... Life" Ultramagnetic MCs "Critical Beatdown" Gang Starr - A couple of good albums, I'd recommend starting with their greatest hits comp, "Full Clip" though. Boogie Down Productions "Criminal Minded" & "My Philosophy" MC Shan "Down By Law" Black Sheep "A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing" Mantronix "The Album" EPMD "Strictly Business" & "Unfinished Business" Run DMC "Run DMC", "King of Rock" and "Raising Hell" Tribe Called Quest "Low End Theory" Eric B & Rakim "Paid In Full" & "Follow the Leader" ("Don't Sweat the Technique" had some great moments also, but gawd, some of those lyrics are pathetic). Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" Pete Rock & CL Smooth "Mecca and the Soul Brother" & "The Main Ingredient" Wu Tang Clan "36 Chambers" New: cLOUDDEAD "cLOUDEAD" Jel - "10 Seconds" Sage Francis "Personal Journals" EL P "Fantastic Damage" Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein" Boom Bip "Seed to Sun" Aesop Rock "Daylight & "Labor Days" Company Flow "Funcrusher Plus" & "Little Johnny From The Hospital" Mike Ladd "Welcome to the Afterfuture" Dalek "From Filthy Tongue..." DJ Shadow "Endtroducing" (more of a turntable album than hip hop album, but it's in the same ballpark) The Roots "Illadelph Halflife" & "Things Fall Apart" Mr Lif "I Phantom" RJD2 "Deadringer" These lists are just off the top of my head, there are many I'm forgetting, but this is a respectable starting point. Have fun. cheers, Tommy --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well done! You've truly named a great bunch there. I want to reiterate that Rjd2's Deadringer is a Must Have. Why it hasn't attained "Endtroducing..." type fame is incomprehensible. For Def Jux type stuff (which is nearly synonomous with any record produced by El-P), I'd say the three best albums released by them (IMHO of course) is in best-to-better order: Company Flow -- Funcrusher Plus Cannibal Ox -- The Cold Vein RJD2 -- Dead Ringer I've heard Cannibal Ox being compared to Wu-Tang quite a bit, but ehh... I don't really hear it. I love Rza to death, but El-P's more experimental bent sounds fresher to my ears. Of course you can't go wrong with Dr. Octagon's classic Dr. Octagonecologyst, which is fairly radio-friendly while still maintaining that edge. And Clouddead's self-titled album out on Mush will please any fan of eerie ambient soundscapes. And HELL, what about Mantronix??? I think it's appropriate to mention Mantronix given their influence on IDM -- get The Album and if you can (it's relatively rare), get Music Madness. I was lucky enough to get that CD not too long ago, and it's been quite a struggle to pry it out of my CD player. _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

With rappin - I've been into instrumental hip-hop for a while now, but this time I'm digging into the real stuff. But I really didn't even know that rapping can be divided into different categories, I only thought that every MC has his distinctive style... From: "cutups" <cutup@andythepooh.com>

Yeah, I weren't all that serious with that converse-remark... I suppose you're right, I should keep my eye on the mainstream scene as well. From: "David Dow" <taoconductor@yahoo.com>

Ok. I'm also on the IDM-Making, so if you feel your stuff has an IDM edge to it, you might as well mention it on that list, and I'd be listening... Thanks a ton for the suggestions so far. It will, however, take me twenty years to get even half of all these bought, so more seconded recommendations would be really useful now. So that picking the couple records I will start with from these 150 recommended artists and albums would be a bit more easy. From the Dej Jux crew I have been considering EL-P's Fantastic Damage - I've heard this record raved in a lot of places. I remember it popping up on this list a few times as well, so I was a bit surprised that it got so few mentions... .: visa tapani --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

recently i'm really, really enjoying Binary Star - Masters of the Universe. VERY good. out of the last 30 albums i've heard this is the one i keep putting on. i've also found that Amazon's various kinds of "maybe you will like this" features (other customers bought, lists, reviews) are a good place to browse around looking for names. on the Binary Star page (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00004ZDPK) you can see they mention Zion I, Hieroglyphics, Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Del, El-P... lots of good recommendations. i am also enjoying Delinquent Habits, if you like Mexican/American hip-hop, and Freestyle Fellowship as well. check out the hip-hop section of cdbaby.com, too; you can listen to lots of tracks there and buy CDs from independent artists. there are also two freestyle fellowship album available from cdbaby.com if you want to preview/buy them there. (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/freestylefell is one) you should absolutely head on over to the Amazon link up there and listen to the previews of the Binary Star album. the first few songs (Reality Check, Conquistadors, Slang Blade) are some of my favorites on the album. Slang Blade is great but the clip does not do the song justice. there are two other clips on Amazon but unfortunately they are clips of intros and stupid stuff. really, if you couldn't tell, i'm loving this album. j. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hells yeah. has anybody mentioned dan the automator's and prince paul's handsome boy modelling school album? also would highly recommend MF Doom - Operation: Doomsday. One of the most raw and fresh albums in recent memory. His new one as King Gheedorah - You Will Take Me to Your Leader is awesome as well. _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

disflex6 actually has a load of stuff out, each artist has about one to three albums out already.. and they're all really really good, especially the elon.is and lazerus jackson albums.. you can get them from www.belowsurface.com which is also the record store that is Sublevel Epidemic Records that has put out some of the sunset leagues and disflex6 releases... most of the stuff up to just recently that has been on lex records from all the disflex6 guys hasn't been exclusive, they're just tracks taken from their full length albums... so check it. -k --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
