and this brings up a very interesting point... why then are independent CDs just as much? TroubleManUnlimited and Dischord's discs always seem to be a couple dollars cheaper where i shop, which is rad... but why aren't the indies releasing cds at $7 (tops)? i've been wondering this for a while, can someone tell me? i mean, it would even be a brilliant publicity/marketing stunt to release all of your cds at $6... you would help bring to light the grotesque overpricing by others, and maybe make more money in the long run for yourself... i work in the publishing industry... we make, like, $1 off a $25 hardcover book...

It's tought to have a CD with an MSRP of $6 when everybody has to make a cut, between the store, and the distro, yourself, and the artist. It's easier to do for a single or EP, which you would assume has lower costs. Then again, most of our ilk are bedroom musicians, so the production cost on an EP or a single or an album is roughly similar. The big cost is pressing and getting it to distro. My goal with my label is to price more reasonably, but I've found that isn't always as easy as I'd hoped. I think the MSRP on the FK SDJ 12" was like $6 or $7, which is not fantastic. :| But everybody has to get a cut, between Forced Exposure, the store that buys the record from them, and then myself as the label has to make up the cost of the other 499 copies... And no, we did not turn a profit. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think someone who ran a small label (or...?) posted something regarding this to the list about a year ago or so. If you price your CDs for less than the competition, they won't necessarily sell more. In fact, people are more likely to think your CD is crappy, and you're just trying to pawn it off on people. They'll see the small label with the weird names and the $8 CD and thing "my god, that must be crap, they stuffed it full of music, I bet it's stuffed full of crap!" it's weird, but it happens. I'm sure you've occasionally looked at something like, say, a DVD that you've never seen, and thought "wow, this is really cheap. I wonder what's wrong with it.." it's the same with high prices. People figure that since the prices are high, or at least equal, that they're getting quality. You might buy a ton of CDs from a label you've heard of from artists you konw about for cheap, but would you buy a CD, sound unheard, just because it was cheaper? derek -- eggytoast.com -------------- commerce soon: eggtastic.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The publishing industry needs to die, too. Poorly managed, lacking in creative integrity: fuck Ingram and fuck Amazon: the publishing industry suck the big one of the big distributors. Bloated. The major publishers are owned by the exact same parents who control the music industry. It is more BMG B.S. Support independent booksellers and publishers: read independent zines not an old Stone that lack balls and a Spin doctor who hypes humps. .o0O}seeklektek{O0o. -FPT: what a (bad) joke! I think knowledge focuses on drumnbass. I subscribe to XLR8R, and I'm generally pretty happy with it. There's a lot of fluff and fashion crap in there, but they normally have a couple of good features a month and loads of reviews. www.xlr8r.com Brandon --- svin <svinrave@yahoo.com> wrote:
