I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. I do like "Gantz_Graf" and the accompanying visuals quite a bit, but also think they did sort of drop the ball by not including the original (superior) "Second Bad Vilbel," by not exploiting the 5.1 sound for "Gantz_Graf," etc. Speaking of which and changing the subject, does anyone know who actually _is_ doing something with 5.1 sound? I know Hawtin did some sort of proof-of-concept CD thing at the Miami conference a few years ago (it's now unavailable, see http://www.m-nus.com/flash/) and I've seen a DVD from the Sly & Robbie / Howie B collaboration that was mixed in surround, but who else is (if anyone) actually writing stuff in 5.1? The Orb always seemed like a no-brainer to me (they've always gotten so much mileage out of panning, I can't imagine they wouldn't leap at the opportunity to "paint the room" in surround), but that's probably just wishful thinking on my part... A few albums out there have received 5.1 retrofits - Matmos's Matador album and Bjork's vespertine. This is second hand knowledge from a contact on another list so don't take it at face value. I do know that Jake Mandell is working on a 5.1 album and so is Richard Devine according to 'urban hustler' Nat Hawks recordcamp interview with him. A (stereo) remix single just came out to promote the Mandell album. So we've got our minidisk label. Who is going to start a 5.1 label?? ~g --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The first person who comes to mind is Richard Devine, who has publicly stated in interviews that he's converting his entire studio to 5.1 production. As far as I know he doesn't have anything released in 5.1 (though perhaps his commercial work for Nike utilizes it?), but that would be one to look out for. The other thing I would mention is that the academic side of computer music has been involved with multi-speaker spatialization for many years now; there have been varying levels of consistency with regards to speaker placement, but a number of people have done work with 5.1 systems specifically. Unfortunately, I don't have a list of names off the top of my head, since I don't know that side of thing nearly as well. A number of the performances at SEAMUS (Society for Electroacoustic Music in the US) this year involved multi-channel works; their site might be a good place to look if this interests you: http://seamus2002.music.uiowa.edu/ Cheers, Bill -- http://www.chromedecay.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
