why do i think that being a girl who likes idm is not any different than being a boy who likes idm? or why do i get 'ooh, you're a girl' emails when i post? the answer to the first should be obvious--it's about the music, not about the people listening to it. of course, everyone's take on the music, their opinions and reactions, are different, based on who they are and what they like--but i'm resistant to the idea that it's weird for women to like idm for any reason. it's a hard genre for anyone to get into--i used to hate it! i couldn't really appreciate the broken rhythms and the abstract sounds...but now i love it..it just took some time, and other sorts of emotional and mental maturing. i don't necessarily disagree with the statement that there are a lot fewer women into idm--i just think it is pointless and possibly divisive to makea big deal out of it as a 'women are different than men' kind of thing. and to get back to the subject of music, i REALLY like the new string theory album (more like an EP) called anhedonia...the first track especially makes me happy---excellent driving music. it's smooth and lush, and also has wonderful transitional crunchiness... another thing i picked up recently tht i love is the cottage industries 2: annexe 2 cd set--cd 1 is especially good...a lot of the kind of thing i love--emotion and melody and depth suspended, arched over crunchiness...mmmmmmm. i think the only track off cd 1 i don't care for much (but don't hate!) is one called neo robot party crash. thing 3: more on the ambient tip, but still excellent--ambient soho 3, with 2 excellent tracks on cd 2 by sandspider, whose debut album, spider, is worth picking up as well. lovely beats, good texture, and interesting samples here and there. -rachel (aka djpie) piesarenice.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i agree with you, dj pie. but this is an old debate and actually pretty interesting, i think. not just girls vs. boys, but the question of "does it matter who made/played the music?" for some marginalized types, it does - if you're gay, and you've got a gay agenda, and you want to push it through music, then it does matter. this is as divisive as it would be for you to say "i'm making girl music," but in some cases, people want this division in order to make a point, or to give voice to people/ideas who normally don't get heard. still, it is about music here and not politics. a couple of gay students approached my music history professor wanting to know if schubert was gay, because they thought they could hear it in his music. to them, it did matter. i can't generally hear gayness or boynees or girlness in music, but then i'm not really listening for it. turns out schubert may have been gay after all, but i still don't hear his quartets as "gay quartets." no point, really. anyway, i'm just playing devil's advocate. i say let the art speak for itself. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

hey - ok :) so, there ya go, thanks rachel for the music notes and getting me back on track...oi...sorry alll, I'm a bit crispy from the weekend, so I kinda took it, ran with it, then got lost in the woods...so....Friday we headed to the Rotunda at U of Penn for the last installement of Stargate to Moonbase Alpha for the season - (we missed Lenola, The Great Quentini was brilliant, mad and enlightened as always ;>, Steve Zeitler was performing in Philly for the first time on amazing home made electronic instruments, beautiful powerful, Tim Larsen & Dave Lunt were just getting startyed as we had to leave, leaned toward an ambient techno sound) as always a great and interesting evening. Tonite in Philly is a 'close listening' party' ---> I'll be there Zenapolae and Fuzzy Box Present: an evening of close listening and ambient glitchcore... w/ Goem (Holland - 12K, Bip Hop, Mile Plateaux, Raster Music, Noise Museum, etc., etc.) Freiband (Holland - Kapotte, Muziek, Beequeen, etc.) Howard Stelzer/Jason Talbot Duo (Boston - Intransitive Math, Greek Absurd, Crank, Satori, etc.) DJ Erin Anderson (Philly - Zenapolae, Fuzzy Box) @ Tri Tone (1508 South St.) 9pm-2am $5 Linda At 03:32 PM 4/22/02 -0500, rw wrote:
