now that I've seen the pictures from the BoC listening party, isn't this like juuust a little bit over the top? and does every new warp release *have* to be over-hyped nowadays?? after all, it's just another CD, not some divine intervention or something ... just wondering ;) and sorry for the rant bart

well, I think Warp made a good choice in having the listening parties rather than sending out promo cds of the record. They're probably trying to avoid what happened with drukqs, you know, having the album all over the web months before its release date. i would say that the best way to distribute an album from commercial and artistic points of view would be to sell it at the same time in all formats- vynil or cd in two versions (simple and also more expensive collectible edition) mp3 in a good bitrate from website for smth like $1-2 so it will be easier to buy it that to look for it everywhere and spend time to download a low bit version, than maybe some tracks are not their, etc i am sure that there must be a price that everyone agrees to pay for album in mp3 then to spent time to find a pirate copy my guess would be $1-$3 but not more than $4 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? My first inclination is to check out some of the stuff on Planet ? (www.planet-mu.com) - specifically, Phthalocyanine, Venetian Snares, Hellfish & Producer... er, that's about it. Not to piss anyone off, but some of the stuff on Autechre's "Confield" might fit the bill. I love hellfish and Producer, infact i own the whole deathchant label and thats what i've been told is Terrorcore. I love V. Snares too, they're considered breakcore from what i can tell. Once you get hooked in you'll probably dig all kinds of stuff. Somatic Responces is one of the best artists periods, so its hard to find people who'd measure up. Has anybody else picked up the new Bjork album yet? I'm still in the middle of my "listen repeatedly" phase, but I'm really warming up to it. There's lots of great tracks and, as someone who studied voice and did a lot of non-western singing styles, I'm fascinated by what she did with the human voice. Most of the tracks are close to entirely vocal samples of various sorts, although some of these make use of digital transformations to create granular and oddly-pitched effects. I'm guessing that track 6 ("Who is it") will be her most accessible ballad-hit, while track 14 ("Triumph of a Heart") will be remixed for the dancefloor over and over. Yup. I don't mean to poop on kracfive or anything; they may be superior artists in some regards. <soap box> But I did want to argue that we tend to paint ourselves into a corner with these arguments of primacy and novelty. On the one hand, we tend to value artists who came 'first' in a particular style or technique, which would suggest a valuation of history and the past. On the other hand, we tend to prize 'newness' and a typically modernist hostility to the past and anything that has already been done. As a result, we tend to celebrate an artists for 'creating' something new and different, but then we immediately dismiss their style or sound as 'out of bounds' for other artists (or even for the same artist later in life). There's a lot of beautiful and important cultural production that repeats and reuses previous work, and we--who listen to and enjoy music that is often looped, repetitive and made from samples of previous works--should be last to criticize. </soap box> OK. there's also parallel development where two people who don't know each other or have even heard of each other develop project that bear similarities and concepts. Obviously Bjork was aware of the all vocal experiment before making this album, she invited Robert Wyatt and also named checked Meredith Monk. Both artists that have done much with just vocals. Mingering Mike being the latest example. I think what's important is that Bjork drew folks that she sees as her contemporaries (i.e. Rahzel, that Eskimo throat singer (or is he tuvan?), wyatt, that japanese guy, a couple choirs) into her work. This is a pop album because it's not using the constraint of only using voices as an experiment, but rather as a way to make a rather enjoyable album that sounds very contemporary and well a lot like Bjork. this is the same sort of thing i hear about radiohead's 'kid a'. the point is that it may not be new, but it's going to be new to their fans. it's going to open up the heads of a lot of people. plus, her doing it exposes vocalists like tagaq, shlomo, rahzel, and the others, to an audience that would never have heard of them (except maybe mike patton, but lots of people probably don't know about his experimental vocal work). in the 'medulla' documentary, bjork *knows* she's not doing something totally new. she says she left the rhythms unfinished until last, because she didn't want to do the "obvious" thing of having a beatboxer come in and put rhythm parts on it. to her this is all old news. to answer the other comment about how the vocals were done, it seems (again from the documentary) that most of them were complete live performances with minimal processing, not sampled/programmed. because of this, 'medulla' is a lot more "human"-sounding than the clips i've heard of the kracfive album. the live presence of the other singers (including the icelandic women's choir) turns this into a different project than something that just treats vocals as source material to be chopped up and treated. she also writes songs and melodies as opposed to rhythmic workouts (not that there's anything wrong with the latter). she may always be using different people (in fact 'vespertine' had 4 different artist/producers), but the end result is remarkably similar almost no matter who she works with. d. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Some favorites are Autechre, Arovane, Bochum Welt, Lusine, Metamatics, Yasume, Nacht Plank, Electric Birds, Dead Eros, BoC, Kelpe, Loscil, O.S.T., Christ, Xela, Christian Kleine, Aphex, etc. I'm also really into ambient stuff like Stars of the Lid, Pan American, Bibio, Marsen Jules, Main, Ryan Teague and other sad-basard music ;]. I've been a drum&bass dj for around 6 years under the name Genome, living in San Francisco. I'm with Groundscore (we used to do Eklektic), Phuturo and Violence Recordings. I mostly got on this list to find out what's going on in San Francisco for IDM/Ambient music. It seems to me this city used to have a bit more going on, but since I've had my head up drum&bass' ass for the last few years I don't really know what's happening anymore. So if anybody could help point me in the direction of IDM/Ambient/Experimental promoters, djs, artists, producers, labels in San Francisco/Bay Area I would be grateful!
