simply because i love ppl's "top record" lists, i will post mine, and ask for other people to post theirs. this way we can expand our horizons. try to post small descriptions for info. thanks! my list so far, in no particular order: prefuse73 - vocal studies and uprock narratives -awesome cut up hip-hop vocals provide textural elements in this fantastic head-nodding cd. solvent - solvent city -gorgeous, simple, melodic music, very much bochum welt influenced, but has his own character. probably my favorite so far. abfahrt hinwil - programm 2 7"; logatech 10" -both of these hard-to-find releases are simply amazing. melodic, with great background elements, these short songs (3-4 minutes, mostly) are able to sweep you into them, wishing they were many more times as long. the silver mt. zion memorial orchestra and tra-la-la band - born into trouble as the sparks fly upward - offshoot of the more popular Godspeed You Black Emperor!, silver mt. zion creates similar music, but it is more reserved. they create beautiful songs with string instruments and minimal vocals. i'm sure there are more, but my cd collection is not in front of me, and i cant recall what came out this year or not. but still, lets see some lists! shane --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

is it that time of year, again ?!!!? can we wait a couple o' weeks before doing this, there's still 8 weeks before next year ... and tons of potential new releases ... if you really want it ( for now ): Rechenzentrum's Peel Session Pete Namlook and Move D's Wired Process's Pattern Recognition np: absolutly non-intelligent "Kopfgeister 1991-2001" compilation of Thomas P. Heckmann stuff, 3 CDs worth of banging techno electro and more ... memories, memories ... --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It's similar, but the 80s synthpop influence (early Human League, Vince Clarke, etc.) is even stronger than before. Personally, it's one of my favourite releases of the last few months, but I've been on a real synthpop kick lately so I might be a little biased. Someone else already mentioned Ladytron, which is a good choice. I'd also recommend Adult. (and pretty much anything else on their Ersatz Audio label) Their stuff is a little dirtier sounding than Solvent, and features vocals on most tracks, but is very good. I've really been liking the Kitbuilders album that came out recently as well. My copy says "(p) & (c) merck 2001" on the back, and I'm pretty sure that's correct. Forced Exposure has it on the New Releases list for February, although that isn't necessarily an authority: http://www.forcedexposure.com/new/2001feb10.html#MERCK I thought someone would call me out on the Aurora comp, which I think was technically released in 2000, though I'm not sure if it was available in stores until January 2001... -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? RealAudio samples at: http://www.klangstabil.com/hymen/all/y034.html IMHO, not as interesting as little pretty automatic, but then they are just lo-quality clips... -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Stuff I've found noteworthy so far: Funckarma - Solid State Best album I've heard this year by a comfortable margin. Programming is perfection, but more importantly these songs have an emotive depth lacking in most stuff I hear these days. Prefuse 73 - Vocal Studies and Uprock Narratives There seems to be a belief that Machine Drum was the originator of this style rather than Herren. Where are people getting that? "Estrocaro" came out in October 2000 which was several months before "Now You Know..." Regardless, this album is just quality listening throughout. "Nuno" might be my favorite track of the year. Fennesz - Endless Summer Would like it even better if the first track had been omitted. Not cohesive with the rest. My first real foray into whatever genre this falls under. Gorgeous. His track on Click & Cuts 2 is something special too. Crunch - (What ever the title is) Nothing we aren't used to. Just classic "IDM." Bauri - Lakonia I really dig this. Need to track down more Bauri. Boards of Canada - In A Beautiful Place Out In the Country God I'm looking forward to their next album/whatever. Overall I'm a little disappointed with this year. While Morr Music and City Centre offices have been solid, their releases haven't been as stellar as I would have thought based previous ones. Of the heavy hitters, the strongest release was probably Plaid. Lots of people seem to be hyping Abfahrt Hinwil. Hearing the loops on the Toytronic site did nothing for me, so I'm wondering if those are short repeating loops and the songs have more to them? Any help? _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

great choice. but i have to respond to your statement about the origin of this style. by the style, do you mean hip-hop/electronic crossover? or do you mean the use of vocal cuts to create texture? i still consider p73 and Machine drum hip-hop/electronic crossover, and this stuff has been around for awhile. push button objects has been doing this stuff for years, for one. we have CD's like the East Flatbush Project on Choc. Ind., where famous artists like autechre/squarepusher were remixing hip-hop. Funkstorung was doing this kind of stuff with Appetite for Disctruction. im sure that people can name more stuff that i cant even recall right now. but i think that calling hip-hop/electronic stuff a recent development isn't exactly true. please tell me if i construed your statement incorrectly. shane --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't think either of them really originated "this style" ... maybe BoC? :P No, really, it would probably be Herren, even back when he was playing around with the Delarosa project, he had the hip-hoppy idm-y post-rocky thing going on a few tracks.

I know I said something in my list about Uprock being "too late" and that's why it was only a runners-up for me; by that I didn't mean "Machine Drum did it first," I meant, "Machine Drum got to me and won my heart first." Anyway, I just prefer Machine Drum's, er, style, to that of Scott, though he's good at what he does, too. Can't explain it. Something about Uprock strikes me as somehow disconnected from my own personal reality, whereas Machine Drum makes me think of subways and spray paint... I guess I've just listened to it a lot more.

Well, personally they/s/he/it just hits the same spot for me that Gimmik does, although maybe a little warmer. Pleasant electronics. I'd rank him after Gimmik of the artists on Toytronic's roster. I wouldn't particularly want to *hype* the act, but I do enjoy it. -Adam __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Make a great connection at Yahoo! Sorry, I was a little vague with that statement. I did not mean to imply that Scott Herren first to fuse IDM and hip hop. More likely he consummated the relationship. What I was referring is that there seems to a camp that considers Prefuse 73 a derivative of Machine Drum and degrades it accordingly. This is not to say I dislike Machine Drum, its a solid album. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

It's still to early for such list, but I can't resist... Here are some IDM or IDM related favorite albuns of 2001 (till now...): Autechre "Confield" Radiohead "Amnesiac" Herbert "Bodily Functions" Cannibal Ox "The Cold Vein" (okay, I know it's hip-hop) Björk "Vespertine" Fennesz "Endless Summer" Neotropic "La Prochaine Fois" Spring Heel Jack "Masses" (okay, I know it's jazz) To Rococo Rot "music is a hungry ghost" Tortoise "Standards" (okay, I know it's post-rock) Dat Politics "sous hit" Panasonic "Aaltopiiri" Russell Haswell "Live Salvage 1997 -> 2000" Rafael Toral "Violence of Discovery and Calm of Acceptance" Wagon Christ "musipal" ISAN "Salle d'isan" Phoenecia "Brownout" Still to ear the new Aphex album. Squarepusher, Matmos, Plaid and Prefuse 73 didn't rock my world this year.
