I'd have to agree with Robert here. Hong Kong's music scene is pretty grim unless your tastes extend no further underground than the N'Sync, and IDM is more or less non-existent. Digital Cutup Lounge is indeed a good bet, though. I caught them a while ago at the Jazz Club in Lan Kwai Fong, battling it out with a live jazz band. Pretty good stuff. If you do happen to find anything of interest while you're in Hong Kong, I'd love to hear about it. Good luck, Andrew

Thanks for the props...I have now moved to LA, however, so not much chance of catching us in HK again soon, though I might come back occasionallly for the odd gig. BTW, we will have another CD coming out around Dec/Jan which is a lot more IDMish than our previous jazz mix session 'Cutup Mixdown'...the next one is to be called 'Network Effects' and includes lots of bits and pieces of live gigs in HK as well as studio tracks. It will be released first in HK and then in the US. Here's a good tip for those of you in HK: check out <http://www.gwylorecords.com> for any info on the local electronic music scene. Aha! I thought DCL was on the list... It's too bad HK doesn't even have DCL anymore. That leaves HK with just about nothing in the IDM realm. :(

Yes, Gwylo Records is good, but I found their newsletters to come a bit late. I would receive an email newsletter about upcoming events on the weekend they were happening (sometimes even after the event). I guess if you check the web site regularly it might be better. As I said before, most of the time I ended up resorting to the free rags like HK or BC mag for advance info. On a followup note, I recommend searching out DJ Kulu (maybe spelled wrong). He's not IDM per se, however he plays a wicked set of downtempo and rare groove type jazzy stuff. He plays in different styles all the time in Hong Kong. He should be easy to find if you want a break from the normal progressive trance banter most of the clubs or "rave" parties play in Hong Kong. -rbc3 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I don't think they do much in HK anymore, though...I don't know them but from what I hear they are more active in Europe... However, my partner Stephen Ives is still in HK and will be doing some weird stuff on his own. I'm afraid I forgot to mention that he was playing on Sunday night at Club 64 with an electric erhu player, our sometime collaborator Fok Sai-kit. Ah Kit is super-cool, she plays in the HK Chinese Orchestra and has a solo career doing classical Chinese music but she also loves plugging into an FX rack and jamming over some scratchy electronic beats and noises with us. We did a studio jam session with just before I left HK last month and have about two hours worth of avant-erhu playing recorded that we are planning to use for a future CD project... Email Stephen at <stephen@digitalcutuplounge.com> to get added to the DCL HK mailing list... BTW, you also might want to check out local HK electronic bands Slo-Tech Rhythm and Primary Shapes...maybe not IDM but they are doing some creative stuff. We just did a remix collaboration with Primary Shapes that will be floating around HK sometime soon...PS mostly do triphop kind of stuff and the Slo-Tech are off on a noisy breakbeat/postrock direction.

DJ Kulu is a real cool dude, I would recommend him as well...I believe he's doing jazz chillout sessions every Monday at phi-b and possibly also Friday or Saturday nights at Aqua, both of those in Soho (South of Hollywood Road, HK's latest hippest neighborhood).
