fyi - from http://www.dublab.com, one of my favorite destinations on the web and former home to my sunday night mix show :( cross your digits that they're not gone for good, and if you know of any billionaire venture capitalists with impeccable music taste let us know. (you'd be well advised to check the site if you don't know it already, over 250 archived sets from pole, mouse on mars, phoenecia, mixmaster morris, amon tobin, divine styler, cut chemist, blackalicious, swayzak, klute, photek and more...) ---------- From: Derek McNeill <derelict@dublab.com> To: Reply-to: derelict@dublab.com Subject: IMPORTANT dublab NEWS Date: Mon, Jan 29, 2001, 9:11 PM Hi dubhead, dublab Phase 1 has ended. Over two years ago an idea brewed in the collective clouds of our minds. We joined together and built a concept based on the positive music that guides our lives. The mission was to spread these sounds across the world and enrich lives. We all took a leap, quit our jobs, and turned our dreams into reality. The early months were spent assembling a superior crew of djs, researching technology, formulating our objectives, and hammering nails into wood to build a studio. (the next few weeks were spent staring with wide-eyed amazement as the studio actually stood) For the past year and a half we have taken immense pleasure in bringing you the best music in the world. All the labrats have poured their hearts and souls into creating a unique and beautiful experience. Unfortunately, the economy has not mirrored our tremendous growth. We blossomed and spread creative energy while investor pocketbooks snapped tight like Venus flytraps. We looked high and low for people that could grasp the amazing force and value that is dublab. We learned that pioneers often go hungry. **This Wednesday at 6pm pst we will be temporarily turning off the dublab live stream.** This is not the end of dublab! It is our hope to secure investment and relaunch the live stream even better than before. Please continue to visit the page, listen to the archives, communicate with fellow dubheads in the chat room, use the links, read the reviews, and enjoy all the other content we have created. Also keep your eyes peeled for the first dublab "Field Reports" compilation to be released on Emperor Norton Records in May!!! Thank you for your amazing support, encouragement, and inspiration. Please continue to spread the word and keep us in your thoughts! If you would like to touch base please use the feedback feature on dublab or info@dublab.com Peace, the Labrats aka the optimistic unstoppable dreamers -Derek McNeill http://www.dublab.com ___________________________________________________________________________ Visit http://www.visto.com/info, your free web-based communications center. bandwidth is dependant upon how many people are logging on to hear the streams - it's all down to servers capacity & stuff we thinks. the best thing about dublab is that it managed to remain banner-free (no clicks=nocash) we would hate to see them go to a dreaded 'pay per listen' or 'subscription model' but if everyone on this list sent them a tenner... dublab is going to be needed more than ever in the next 4 years.... surely among all the webdesigners on this list there are a few closet V.C.'s... I think VCs are pretty rare these days. Or if not rare, ready to invest in things that have nothing to do with e-commerce or dot-anything (although .tv seems on the up and up). How much money was lost investing in that company that sells women's underware online? Anyway, I don't think Dublab's exceptional archives would really mean anything to a rich man with a tight wallet. But there still is a small chance. There are two mailing lists in LA that are dedicated to web development and networking. One is called Web-405 and the other is called Goodtimes. There might be a well-listened VC that's all about Blectum from Blechdom and Divine Styler. -l on 1/30/01 11:32 PM, nethed at nethed@ninjatune.net wrote:

I think they could stream (using realaudio as they currently do) about 60 (maybe more) simulataneous listeners off a dedicated T1 for about $600-$800/month in a co-lo facility if you admin your own box. But you really need two machines, one to run the website, one to run the real server and hold the archived sets. But the kicker is having enough bandwidth to go from the studio to the server to do the live part, I assume the studio serves another money-making business purpose? So probably has some kind of DSL type connection, if not then the rent on the studio and connection to the server is another cost.... -i --- nethed <nethed@ninjatune.net> wrote:
