I was at the Tommy Boy site and noticed that Broadcast is signed with them and released "The Noise Made By People" in April. This is pretty cool stuff -- maybe a more sonically restrained my bloody valentine ("Echos Answer") with tendencies towards Serge Gainsbourg by way of Stereolab ("Come on Let's Go"). But those are only approximate reference points. Trish Keenan's offhand delivery, without vibrato -- a little brighter than Astrud Gilberto but with the same deceptive flatness of pitch. Anytime you make downtempo vocal tracks, it brings Portishead to mind. But while they share common influences -- especially soundtrack composers like Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone -- they've used more of the harmonic richness of that music, where Portishead plays up the cynical film noir side. You can listen to 4 tracks (or excerpts) at http://www.tommyboy.com/broadcast/index.html kent williams -- kent@avalon.net http://www.mp3.com/chaircrusher -- tunes http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?autostart=chaircrusher -- mix --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm not mentioning much that wasn't mentioned before, but if you'd like to filter the list below down a little (obviously coil and nin are at relative remove from broadcast), here goes: Stereolab is obviously the closest to Broadcast's sound. The UiLab Fires EP (covers of St. Elmo's Fire-- took me over a year to warm up to it, but now I think it's lovely) seems really relevant as well. Mum (the icelandic, not the austrian outfit) is also weirdly reminiscent to my ear-- moodwise, at the very least. You could also say St. Etienne, but why bother? Yawn.... As far as the lush, disaffected, breathy female voice goes: My Bloody Valentine, the Sundays, the Cocteau Twins, Julie Cruise (cheese factor = high; irony = nonexistent), and *recent* Yo La Tengo (Georgia's tracks are gorgeous) are all quite nice, for various reasons. United States of America, John Barry (lots of Barry), and Eno are some important back influences, as are Edith Piaf and the ever-lovely Francoise Hardy. I think someone also mentioned the Forbidden Planet soundtrack recently? I'm sure there are others that are just as reminiscent-- the shoegazer and trip-hop scenes definitely churned out their share of cookie-cutter contenders, and Broadcast have soaked up a steaming heap of prog along with their noir-- but the bands/people above I can recommend without much reservation. Probably someone from Birmingham could fill this in better. Not that anything other than Stereolab sounds all *that* much like Broadcast.... What was that line from Simon and Garfunkel.... "I been Phil Spector'd... resurrected"-- that's how I always remember it, anyway. Always comes to mind when listening to Broadcast. Cheers, M. ----- Made with affection by distrustful lovers.

im sorry but i completely disagree with broadcast and stereolab sounding anything alike. they dont at all! broadcast is more like a contemporary ennio morricone soundtrack. they definitely sound alot like united states of america, that seems to have been a major influence. the vocals are performed in the same manner. anyway i dont think you will really find anything that will sound quite like broadcast. moodwise yes. things that go along with broadcast in my opinion are: pram plone some songs by dominique a. (the orchestrated ones) i also think that some of the drone stuff fits well. i guess it is more like matching wine with dinner. whatever fits that moody sound. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm a big fan of Broadcast! They have now 2 albums and some EPs. From them I have these records: Albums: Work and Non Work - compilation of early EPs in a single CD. For some it is the best Broadcast album. The Noise Made by People - second album from 2000. It's a little bit more easy to follow, and it is my favourite, it's more melodic. I think you must purchase this one. EPs that I have: Extended Play - it's the one you have, build up from the excelent song "Papercuts"... Extended Play Two - build up from the song "Unchanging Window", I also recomend it a lot. It is the other face of the first EP. Drums on Fire - a 12" vynil, with a remix from Two Lone Swordsmen for the song "Come on Let's Go". Come on Let's Go - a CD single featuring the more poppy song from "The Noise Made By People". Also you can find some remixes made by Broadcast for Badly Drawn Boy and Saint Etienne which are pretty good. You may find them in the Audiogalaxy. Along with Stereolab, Lali Puna and... err... Radiohead :), Broadcast are doing an excelent job blending electronic stuff into songwriting. Cheers Cesar At 01:15 PM 2/18/02 -0000, you wrote:

Any fans of Broadcast should check out the "United States Of America" record. 70's (possibly 60's) rock record that bears more then a passing resemblance to Broadcast. Not to say they just ripped them off or anything (I love Broadcast), but as Stereolab is to Neu, Broadcast is to United States Of America (and well White Noise also). And BTW, there is an Ennio Morricone series out called "Canto Morricone," vol 1 "the sixties" has most of this morricone stuff. One of my favorites as well. The man is a genius. Me! The song with the refrain 'come on, let's go' is an all-time favorite. In fact that whole album is great, if only-just-slightly too lowfi for me. I wish it had been produced with the maniacal attention to detail of, say, the Cardigan's Gran Turismo... ...but if you need a french-pop infusion run don't walk. aaron ghede@well.com http://www.quietamerican.org --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I only know them of the music video "papercuts", downloaded from Sputnik7 - mms://wm01.bluetape.com/ppct_300.asf or http://www.sputnik7.com/vod/vodartist.jsp?section=music&key=ppct and like it a lot. I'll try their other stuff, too - hope it's just as nice. -- Jan! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
