I was at the Tommy Boy site and noticed that Broadcast is signed with them
and released "The Noise Made By People" in April. This is pretty
cool stuff -- maybe a more sonically restrained my bloody valentine
("Echos Answer") with tendencies towards Serge Gainsbourg by way
of Stereolab ("Come on Let's Go"). But those are only approximate
reference points. Trish Keenan's offhand delivery, without vibrato
-- a little brighter than Astrud Gilberto but with the same deceptive
flatness of pitch.
Anytime you make downtempo vocal tracks, it brings Portishead to mind.
But while they share common influences -- especially soundtrack
composers like Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone -- they've used more of
the harmonic richness of that music, where Portishead plays up the
cynical film noir side.
