hi folks, i was recently reading through my email on another list when i came across the topic of "best album covers". i know we've had some recent conversations awhile ago about liner notes, lack of general content, etc on album designs; but what's really piqueing my interest right now is who out there do you think has produced some incredible digital artwork (or non-digital if applicable) for any kind of album cover? a couple of no-brainers come up with FSOL's Lifeforms and Dead Cities artwork. And Jarre's Oxygene LP has a nice design (in my opinion, in fact its hanging on my wall, because i'm poor and can't afford proper framed art) as well. i'm just curious, because as a sort of digital artist myself (i do whats refered to as "ascii" or "ANSI" art heh), i'm into that kind of thing. and as always, if you find this too off topic, feel free to ignore it. i have the feeling there are probably a lot of you out there who would enjoy this topic though. this message brought to you by spinsane // www.acid.org :) /_____________ . ............. /.:::. !wendy creamer! wcreamer@helios.acomp.usf.edu <-- |:: ...... :....: // ______ :: /: ::: ```` ,pqqqqq .,s%@s, "the greater the /// /::`/ : ::` >$bs,, $$$$$$"` .d$P" """ .k obstacle, the more /____/___/ :: :.d$$$$$P` '4$$$$b.$$$l +p%$$$k. glory in overcoming it." / __/\__: | $$$$$b,pgg,d$$$P"`+$$$b,..d$$$P"` ___ ___- Molier _____// \o @ /: |:.`"+S$$P"Q$$S+` :. `"+S$$S+"` .:` /__/ /_________________/ /_/\_\: |||:+.... : `"` .:::::+,,.. .::::+,.. .....................::......| |||>>this sig done by wendy's mack daddy, Spinsane of ACiD/RMRS/DPS<<:|| --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the warp cd version of EP7 by autechre is high class in my HO also the lp of chiastic slide was very imaginitive at the time, especially the printing on the inside of the sleeve. sneaky! other artwork that comes immediately to mind (and i hate to seem like such a DR fanboy, but what the hell, they rule) Funkstorung's Additional Productions, Music is a Rotted One Note by Squarepusher, Niun Niggung by Mouse on Mars (Thrill Jockey version ... the Sonig one is great but I like the TJ artwork better) the studio that did Niun Niggung's artwork (www.icon-design.de) also did the last two Oval releases. i think their technique of mapping low-resolution bitmap textures onto high-resolution 3-d models reflects the techniques used in modern electronic music. hmm, also the Mauver 12" by Bola, and the Push Button Objects 12" on Skam with the wicked bad graffiti art on it josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Mon, 17 Jul 2000, robotosis wrote:

i dunno but i laughed my ass off when i saw it i'll wager it's a reference to vibert's overuse of the amen breakbeat, which he overused almost to the point of embarrassment on the Plug series unfortunately for mr. 606, that was before a million other junglist wankers overcooked that beat until it took on more of a cliche then the fucking 'funky drummer' break, so his "creative" re-hashing of the same goddamned beat leaves me colder than payne stewart at 35,000 ft he's a clever programmer and producer, Kid606 is. he just needs to vary his sonic pallette into slightly less trodden regions... i think tom jenkinson should be the only human allowed near Amen for the next ten years josh -- String Theory : Digital Music for Humans http://www.enteract.com/~yoshi/index.cgi On Mon, 17 Jul 2000, Brian MacDonald wrote:

i bought this limited edition of 999 copies cD thing from Kim's in manhattan a couple weeks ago called The Elements of Light. Not really that impressive from a IntelligentDorkMusic hoarder like muhself, sum pretty funky 808 and 909 schtuff but the high frequency jolts looped like that pac-man sample in the Mack song make me nuttier than a elephant's stool. But yea, the packaging is dopilicious, it had this wierd grey origami type sleeve with red and black lettering, a separate sheet about the yea's and nay's when spending 7 years on an album, and a rad plastic case for the cD with sum non-reading skamBrailleIsh dots on the outside and a horizonally opening flip-action jammy. Yep i bought it for its looks and kim's outlandish comparison of it to derrick may and the Detroit elders massiv. for anyone who gives a ::woop!:: or two the better artists were titonton monochrome ihannoa{prolly the most well-pieced together} peaceNchickengrease centripdLL Np>jordana_tidal surge --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Are you kiddin' ? That's such tDR wannabe shite ! And when I saw an advance copy and looked at the track listing on the back I thought it was a CD-R. All the writing, on the cover and on the back, looks really plain and uninspired, almost as bad as the writing on the "Attitude" 3" CD on Tigerbeat6. hmm... well the worst design that i've seen recently is the beta bodega CD. sure the music is good, but what the hell are you supposed to do with all of those pieces of packaging. maybe you could argue that it's innovative, but i think it's mostly just a pain in the ass. said it before, but i think the best design i've seen lately is the leaf stuff that i've picked up (eardrum remixes, inv sdtrks IV). nice to see them put some time into those sleeves instead of just throwing the records into plain white. something i've been meaning to ask: did the morrmusic version of pop loops for breakfast have the hidden track? that being a great cover of natalie imbruglia's "torn". the charizma CD has it, and i was just wondering if it had been added for that release. thanks, alan np:alt.frequencies.4 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

the worst design you've seen, eh ? Actually, beta bodega produces some of the better quality 'intelligent design media.' One of the goals of the Beta Bodega coalition is to bring Third World issues to center stage via the exploration of alternative audio and design aesthetic. The b2 lp has limited edition handmade silkscreen jackets, & an 8.5x11 info sheet on psychological operations in guerilla warfare. Thoughful, creative... i guess what i really meant was that the *packaging* design is very unwieldly. the CD comes in this sealed plastic bag that has a little cardboard tent stapled onto the top of the bag. so you have to take the staples out of the carboard tent. then you still have to cut the plastic bag to get the CD out. after that, the CD is in a case similar to the ones used for the 20' to 2000 series, or richie hawtin's "orange" CD, but it has a paper U-card around the bottom. so you've all these pieces that for me are going to be a pain to keep track of/store. i like the design on these pieces. very nice stuff. but i wish that everything was together. brought the CD to work today, but could only really bring the plastic case, so i've no idea about the tracklisting. not that it matters. the music is very good. my apologies for flying off the handle as quickly as i did without really explaining why. i hate when i do that. Just some fresh, well conceived ideas I guess, anything but blatant imitations. I'm not partial to any specific kind of aesthetic. As far as IDM, a recent release that I thought had great packaging and artwork was the Slicker Remixes CD on Hefty. Andrei np: Oren Ambarchi - Insulation Still awesome. There's no way some of this stuff is played in real time by a human being with only 2 arms.

You're right, the Frente 57 comp. packaging is quite user-unfriendly. I managed to slash the plastic bag while opening the top. Then to make matters worth, I cut off the ripped part. Now the bag's very unattractive and I'm left with four slips of cardboard to deal with. Maybe I'll transfer the whole kit and kabootle into a Zip lock. Would that ruin the integrity of the design? Perhaps I should invest in an archival copy :-) Jacob At 13:58 PM -0400 7/18/00, mattis <phlawx@earthlink.net> wrote:

Not only that, but the only tracklisting that is printed on the package is on the back of the "beta bodega coalition recruitment form"... i.e. they want you to mail it back to them...! h On Tue, 18 Jul 2000, Jacob Arnold wrote:
