It's like trying to sue a single bucketload of water falling from Niagra Falls! When Napster dies, hundreds of private [Pseudo-Napster Routing Servers] will spring up all over the internet! Suing for mere principal is what those jackasses are doing! I don't listen to Metallica... but I greatly respect them. You may not know this, but they ALLOW taping of their shows - just like the Grateful Dead did, they have a "taper's section" at their shows - and they promote the trading of their shows... in any format. They have every right to sue Napster and anyone else who chooses to break copyright laws. Napster may seem cool, and yeah, wow, you now have a bunch of mp3 files and you didn't have to pay a dime... but what about the art? The artist? I congratulate Metallica on their decision to retain ownership of their music and attempting to put an end to this downward spiral of Web injected freeloader anarchy. Have I used Napster? Yes, about 4 times. What have I downloaded? Mp3's of music I already own and live recordings that aren't released. Do I own bootlegs... yes, but only of Live material. Support art, help it grow and mutate into greater things. Ok - more than 2 cents... but it's Friday, and I want a beer and I did a shitload of programming today, and I'm going insane :) And on a last note... go get some Sonic Wallpaper tracks, they are good for you. i think metallica's action are totally justified. my problem is that the various parties suing napster are all morons. did anyone link to the newspaper article off nofuncharlie? metallica is also suing universities for condoning napster, and lars ulrich called these universities "hypocrites." i fail to see the hypocrisy here. also, a group of record companies is suing napster, seeking $100,000 per song traded on napster. napster does not reap any profit. they do not even have advertisers yet. Not to put too fine a point on it, but Metallica is *also* seeking $100K/song. They're just fscking pissed because their songs aren't worth nearly that anymore. The kids trading their songs over napster probably have metallica box sets already and probably also spend money on Metallica t-shirts, posters, blow-up-dolls and jizz rags.... Maybe metallica *is* losing a few bucks because some of their fans who are already going broke buying lame metallica gear are getting a few songs without paying the cover price. I'm personally not gushing with sympathy for the millionaires exploited by their loyal fans in this manner. then again.... maybe you meant to say "unjustified"? Actually now that I reread your message everything else seems to point in that direction.... if so, never mind :) (I still think Metallica are a bunch of blowhards though).
