substation (www.in2.com/substation/) begins Friday February 7th, 10pm, continues until noon Saturday the 8th...the site is an old Con Edison power substation smack in the middle of midtown, at 19 East 32nd Street, just off Madison. There will be many rooms, chock full of all kinds of installations and visuals and who knows what, AND...We will be featuring FOUR massive soundsystems (TurboSound FlashLights, for anybody who knows how wicked they are...VERY), with a massive variety of fierce DJs and live sets to overwhelm you. In addition, several different people will be providing awesome food throughout the party; there's even going to be software companies demonstrating weird stuff, just to make sure there's too much to do...The music will cover lots of styles, with the emphasis on experimental, including techno, drum'n'bass, electro, dub, ambient, electronica, and on and on. Absolutely no goa, don't worry. This party, dontcha think, is NOT to be missed...wot? all for just $15. Tickets are available at*********** we're only selling 1,000 tickets, so buy yours early. Also, please be mellow and quick about entering and leaving the party, let's leave the party police free to attend to other more important business, ok? Line-ups are as follows, in order of appearance in each room: One: The Baker Denard (Phuture Haus, Inc.) Silver Khan (Temple) Aldo (Throb) Audio Damage Labs Hallucifer (strange?) Oh my god! No DJ Spooky! Does this mean that the Soundlab scene has weathered the hype tsunami that is illbient? I mean, ever since the Spookynaught exploded in the NY media, the Soundlab scene has attracted great performers and insanely big crowds of dilettantes, media slaves, producer-types. It's like DJpolooza. Crowds so big so as to make the scene look like a rave where instead of baggy pants everyone had buddy holly glasses and instead of tripping X for the first time, everyone is sipping Anchor Steam beer at $5 a cup from a 20 minute line. It's a shame that so many great performers have to work in such unpleasant environments. Soundlab should rethink and stop throwing end-of-the-world megaparties, as if all the DJ's were retiring. Stage multiple events at multiple venues on the same night. Throw smaller parties more often, like a series. Schedule the performers to go on a certain times, not just randomly. Ditch the crappy DJ's and embarassing performance artists and only book the good ones. Treat the artists and the scene as if the audience actually cared about who is doing what. Stop treating the parties as if nobody was a real fan of the music. Become a forum for good music, not just a pile of DJ's. Why is it that it seems like the only place I ever hear about half of these DJ's performing live is at Soundlab megaevents, and if I want to see WE I have to spend 10 hours hoping that at some point I happen to be in the room in which WE is playing? It does the DJ's and the audience and the scene a disservice. -Chris Fahey
