Oh my god! No DJ Spooky! Does this mean that the Soundlab scene has weathered the hype tsunami that is illbient? I mean, ever since the Spookynaught exploded in the NY media, the Soundlab scene has attracted great performers and insanely big crowds of dilettantes, media slaves, producer-types. It's like DJpolooza. Crowds so big so as to make the scene look like a rave where instead of baggy pants everyone had buddy holly glasses and instead of tripping X for the first time, everyone is sipping Anchor Steam beer at $5 a cup from a 20 minute line. It's a shame that so many great performers have to work in such unpleasant environments. Soundlab should rethink and stop throwing end-of-the-world megaparties, as if all the DJ's were retiring. Stage multiple events at multiple venues on the same night. Throw smaller parties more often, like a series. Schedule the performers to go on a certain times, not just randomly. Ditch the crappy DJ's and embarassing performance artists and only book the good ones. Treat the artists and the scene as if the audience actually cared about who is doing what. Stop treating the parties as if nobody was a real fan of the music. Become a forum for good music, not just a pile of DJ's. Why is it that it seems like the only place I ever hear about half of these DJ's performing live is at Soundlab megaevents, and if I want to see WE I have to spend 10 hours hoping that at some point I happen to be in the room in which WE is playing? It does the DJ's and the audience and the scene a disservice. -Chris Fahey
